SOCIAL work chiefs have defended their decision to allow four children who were described as living like "street urchins" to be returned to their parents.
The children, aged between seven and ten years old, were found sleeping on dirty bed sheets on the floor of a filthy house in Niddrie by horrified police officers who called to give their parents a formal warning about one of the youngsters running w
ild.

They found the children living in squalor, with dirty faces and matted hair. Their 48-year-old mother was said to be "totally indifferent and unconcerned" when confronted.

The youngsters were immediately taken into care when their plight was discovered in April last year, but it was revealed at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday that they had been returned to their parents just a week later.

Their children's 35-year-old father, who had been carefully cultivating cannabis plants in a cupboard in the house as the children were neglected, was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service after admitting drug cultivation.

Sentence was deferred on the mother, who had admitted neglect.

Sheriff Michael O'Grady said he wanted to monitor the situation before sentencing her: "I view this as a serious matter and what I'm going to do does not reflect that I don't. I want an eye to be kept on the situation and on you," he said.

The mother's solicitor, Keith Leishman, said social workers were meeting the couple every week: "The children were only away for a week and that might reflect the social work department's attitude to their welfare," he said.

However, Tory shadow minister for Children, Schools and Skills, Liz Smith, MSP, criticised the children's return to their parents.

"I am deeply concerned by this announcement and I am sure that view will be shared by many people in the Niddrie community plus parent groups all across Scotland," she said.

She added: "The punishment does not seem appropriate and there must be huge question-marks about the wisdom of allowing the children to remain where they are."

However, Edinburgh's children and families convener, Cllr Marilyne MacLaren, defended her staff.

"Our social workers always act in the best interests of the child and it's a shame that the Tories are trying to score cheap political points at the expense of our dedicated staff when they do not know the details of the case," she said.

A city council spokesman added: "It's in the best interests of the children that the details of this case remain confidential but our staff always prioritise the safety of the child."

A good indicator of a countries social health is how many social workers it employs.

Labour, after 10 years of destroying the family unit, removing any feelings of self worth and self reliance and taking away all forms of discipline have society on it's knees before an army of Beaurocrats and Social Workers.

Britain is very sick and needs to ditch PC leftism in favour of strong, common sense, matter of fact government that does not pander to any whining minority.

This is so wrong, the mother couldn't have cared less about her children but if the parents aren't working they are a source of income. The social workers have just comdemned these children to a life in the sub class where no-one works.

The usual total guff from the EEN and the idiots who fall for their anti-social work/Council propaganda.

Try doing a social worker's job and see how you manage.

As usual, it's easy to criticise but a thorough risk assessment will have taken place, involving others such as the police and health.

As the great Robert Zimmerman once sang: "Don't criticise what you don't understand".

#5 I understand social workers are bleeding heart liberal do gooders who make terrible decisions (look at their track record) Xena is right these kids should never have been returned to these people. And on another note the parents should be sterilised preventing them popping out any more little darlings for the rest of us to pay for!

this is just crazy!why return kids to parents who obviously dont care enough to keep them clean and tidy, these kids would have had to endure a lot of s*it at school for being scruffy etc,the parents need to be sterilised as ~6 said! social workers have too much emphasis on keeping children with families,ok maybe in some less extreme cases, but this is just madness, these type should not ever reproduce again!as well as being bad parents they are a drain on the rest of us who work our butts off!!!

"Labour, after 10 years of destroying the family unit..."

Can you say exactly what they've done to destroy the family unit? Also, what did they do in the other two years?

"...removing any feelings of self worth and self reliance"

What are you banging on about? Only on the EEN board would you get any support for being such an ignorant half-wit.

Isn't the new issue of Gossip! magazine out? Run along now dear, that's quite enough Nazi-esque comments for today.

More money for social workers!

Excellent post Voldemort.

"It's in the best interests of the children that the details of this case remain confidential" - she really means it is in the best interests of the useless clowns in the Social Work Department for details of this case to remain confidential.

Can only hope the loser parents come to grief sooner rather than later - that might give the kids a chance in life.

I was once sitting having a quiet cuppa one day and the cleaner stopped to chat to me. She told me she used to be a social worker but due to the nature of the work she had a nervous breakdown. She said she could not find words to describe the situations and the lives that the kids she dealt with lived in. It must be heart wrenching to see scum like these parents neglecting there children. If it's the 2 kids in Niddrie I have been told about then I understand that the older one brings up and looks after the younger one (like a parent). It's heart wrenching to think about never mind having to deal with it first hand. I take my hat off to these social workers who do good jobs. They work for the state and have guideline and red tape to abide by. It's more than likely that it's the half-wits at the top of the social work chain who have messed up the system.

[b]The prohibitionist cops ALWAYS exaggerate the cases of children of cannabis consuming parents with the hope of breaking up the family. I am really happy that FOR ONCE, the social services people stuck up for family union in the face of prohibitionist cops.
Kids do get dirty, and that has nothing to do with parental neglect or cannabis use. What these kids really need are BEDS. The sad thing is that NOBODY IS ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE. Otherwise, there hardly seems to be a case for social services even to be involved with this family. Tories bite the bag!

Elayne7: Just why in fact did the schools not report how "dirty" these children were? After all, there is a requirement that they do so. Funny (ahem....) nobody else seems to have noticed that these children were neglected either. Prohibitionists are just scumbags and fascists, the dregs of society.
