THE sale of cigarettes and tobacco should be licensed in the same way as alcohol, an MSP is demanding.
Nationalist Christine Grahame has launched a consultation on the issue, ahead of putting forward a member's bill to Holyrood.

If legislation is backed by the Scottish Parliament, it could see those who sell cigarettes to underage youngsters heavily fined or lose their licences.

The proposal has already won the backing of health campaigners.

I need to give myself a slap - but I find myself agreeing with Christine Grahame.

Yet another person on the public purse with no idea what to do except more control, justifying their existence.

We have laws on cigarettes already - people don't follow them. The answer is not "more laws for people not to follow". Let them smoke if they want to smoke. It's up to parents to bring their kids up, not governments. Let the people make their choices, and be responsible for those choices - not trying to control.

If the laws on the sale of tobacco and alcohol were policed and enforced effectively there would be nowhere to buy milk on Christmas day.
