A HEALTH board is spending £90,000 on a team of "smoking police" to stop people lighting up in hospital grounds.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has recruited a squad of eight full-time staff who will approach anyone smoking on NHS premises and ask them to put out their cigarettes.

Clad in high-visibility green jackets, the so-called "enforcers" will also hand out information on quitting smoking.

The scheme - believed to be the first of its type in Scotland - is an expansion of a pilot project at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, which began in March.

Officials said the anti-smoking staff had been trained in conflict management and would always work in pairs when patrolling hospital grounds.

Who do you think you are kidding Mr. Hitler?
If you think we're on the run,
We are the boys who will stop your little game.
We are the boys who will make you think again.
'Cus who do you think you are kidding Mr. Hitler?
If you think old Scotland's done?

Mr. Brown goes off to town
On the 8:21.
But he comes home each evening
And he's ready with his gun.

So watch out Mr. Hitler
You have met your match in us.
If you think you can push us
We're afraid you've missed the bus.

so who do you think you are kidding Mr. Hitler?
If you think old Scotland's done,

Come on guys, lets face it, smoking is a disgusting unhealthy habit. I think that is why I have always smoked, a sort of protest against the PC Brigade. However, fair go as they say in Australia. No diesel or petrol driven trucks to enter the hospital environment. Diesel generators or climate controlled air conditioning units. You think smokers are bad, look at your own air pollution and the sick building syndrome. Get rid of those, then you can tackle folk having a ciggie on hospital premises. What do you mean you cannot tackle the major petroleum companies or building design over the last two decades. Cheez, you guys are supposed to be politically correct.

Seeing patients in wheelchairs, with drip-stands, at all the doors to Glasgow Royal is not a pretty sight.
On the other hand, it is unreasonable to expect lifelong smokers to go "cold turkey" at what is an already stressful period of their lives.
Some form of compromise needs to be reached, if only on compassionate grounds.

The money would be better spent fighting MRSA and C Diff.

Syntax, better to shut up and let people think you're a fool than to speak up and prove it. You are stupider than your average unionista and that's saying something!

This is another waste of money from a health board!

£90,000 would be better spent on an airtight smokers room. Then the poor wee addicts would be warm, dry, stink to high heaven and have their lungs filled with nothing but their beloved tobacco smoke.

The Anti-Smoking policies are becoming ridiculous. Spend the money on something else and get rid of ASH Scotland .

Shame HMG couldm't spend £90k on cleaning up filthy hospitals instead of persecuting patients who want a cigarette. We are truly living in an orwellian dictatorship. Surely the £11bn contributed by the smoker could build and fund hospitals especially for the smoker. Ash scotland are liars and it doesn't take much digging to expose their lies and deceit. Maureen Moore should be sacked and ash should be stripped of their charity status and government funding, they are a disgrace and so are those willing to weild their cosh for them.

#2 Claire. Maureen Moore retires this month after making about £500,000 from smoking. Another liar will replace her.

#5. How much has chas."made" in a lifetime of working? A touch of sour grapes, perhaps, as he could always apply for the job.

David. Ms Moore made her fortune for about 5 years of telling lies. I would not apply for the job, because I don't believe in telling lies.
