Hadden: I'm still the right man for Scotland job

Italy 23 - 20 Scotland
FRANK HADDEN insists he is still the man to lead Scotland forward despite coming under renewed pressure after Saturday's Six Nations defeat to Italy.
Andrea Marcato's last-minute drop goal gave Italy coach Nick Mallet his first win in the competition, and all but erased the memory of last week's Calcutta Cup victory.

Indeed, only three points separated Scotland from the ignominy of the wooden s
poon, but Hadden maintains his side had progressed during the tournament and will keep growing under his guidance.

He said: "Considering the start of this competition and how far we appear to have regressed from the World Cup, we were in a pretty dark place at that stage.

"We had to work incredibly hard to make the progress that I feel we have made in this championship. We are not far away from making a serious impact and punching above our weight in future competitions.

"We will now enter a spell of appraisal. This is likely to start right away. I am confident this young side will make better decisions in future games."

Any appraisal of Scotland's campaign will have to focus on the performance of Dan Parks in the No.10 shirt.

A year ago, Scotland gift-wrapped the Azzurri's first away victory in the Six Nations, throwing three intercepted tries inside the first six minutes.

Whatever lessons were learnt from that Murrayfield horror show obviously went unheeded by Parks, who topped the Six Nations error chart with seven howlers alone coming at the Stadio Flaminio. Two of those led to Italy's tries.

The first came on 15 minutes when his looped pass was intercepted by Kaine Robertson.

His kick ahead was caught by Chris Paterson who was promptly smashed behind his own try line by three white shirts.

From the resulting 5m scrum, Martin Castrogiovanni pulverised Alan Jacobsen until referee Nigel Owens awarded a penalty try.

The second was even more painful. This time, Italy's outstanding No.8 Sergio Parisse was the grateful recipient of another wild, directionless Parks pass. Parisse's own pass then looked suspiciously forward, but Gonzalo Canale cared not a jot as he gleefully dived over.

Not that those were isolated incidents for Parks, who missed tackles, knocked on, kicked poorly and looked a shadow of the player he was at last year's World Cup.

The more he tried, the more things seemed to go wrong, and with just two backs on the bench – one of whom was Andrew Henderson, who had to replace the unfortunate Simon Danielli after he was injured in the opening stages – there was no escape from the torment.

Despite Parks' tribulations, Scotland managed to play in patches – after Italy's early score, they controlled the first half.

Henderson looked to have blown a simple opportunity after failing to beat scrum-half Simon Picone one-on-one. But Scotland retained possession and some great hands by lock Scott MacLeod sent Ally Hogg over.

Parks and Marcato exchanged penalties before Scotland grabbed their second try in first-half stoppage time, thanks to the opportunism of skipper Mike Blair.

The scrum-half spotted a gap in the Italian ruck and before Marco Bortolami or Castrogiovanni could react he was away and under the posts.

A 17-10 lead at half-time was vindication for some controlled, aggressive rugby, but that soon fell to pieces in the second half.

Parks' malaise spread. Even the normally unflappable Paterson was affected and the more the game descended into an error-strewn slugfest, the more it suited the Italians. After Canale's try, Marcato edged the Italians back in front with a penalty after Alasdair Strokosch was caught offside.

Paterson immediately hit back to level the scores with his 33rd consecutive successful kick – an incredible achievement which looked like it had sapped the Italians spirit.

But with time almost up, Italy secured possession and seemed determined to grab the try which would have given Scotland the wooden spoon, only to be repelled by a wall of blue.

Instead, they switched to their Plan B, and Marcato kept his nerve to slot his drop goal, sparking ecstatic scenes among the Italian players and coaches.

The Scots, meanwhile, were despondent, but Hadden was quick to try and draw positives from the narrow defeat, adding: "Losing Nikki Walker in the build-up was a blow, so was losing Simon Danielli after six minutes, and then to go down to a penalty try after ten minutes. But the side showed incredible character to recover from all those setbacks.

"It took a remarkable strength of will to get them to a situation where not only did we dominate and control the game, but had we scored in the second half with some of the opportunities we created, then we could have gone on to record our best performance over here in Italy.

"Sadly, it was not to be, and credit to Sergio Parisse, a top quality player, for taking a huge gamble and picking an interception out of the air. Those are the margins by which games are won and lost. Though you normally get forward passes when the ball is thrown over the line, it was not to be.

"We were especially gutted for our supporters who came over here and wanted us to do well. We felt we were very close to giving them a memorable performance here in Rome."

While the game itself will not live long in anyone's memory, the long-term repercussions are significant, not least for Hadden's job prospects.

A 15-point win for Scotland would have moved them into the top eight of the World Rankings which will decide the 2011 World Cup seedings.

The tournament has also exposed a raft of deep-seated problems which Hadden urgently needs to address before the summer tour to Argentina.

In total, Scotland made just nine line breaks in the entire Six Nations – the lowest of any team. Wales led the way on 38.

A return of four tries from Hadden's last eight games in charge cannot just be blamed on injuries though they certainly played their part.

Injuries, referees and oddly-shaped balls have all been part of catalogue of excuses used by Hadden, but ultimately the buck stops with him.

One win – albeit over the Auld Enemy – may just have granted him a stay of execution, but in the eyes of many, Marcato's drop goal has made Hadden a dead man walking.

Why is Dan Parks' selection and subsequent error strewn performance only be debated now? Parks' has been poor from the moment he got off the plane from Australia. You know it, I know it and every other Scotland fan around the world knows it, so why can't Frank see it?

It's over. Let's have no more talk of "dark places" which were caused by Hadden's selection policies in the first place, giving loyal supporters no hope for the future. Resign and go today ( don't forget to bring Dan ! )

Hadden has to go - simple as that.........As for Dan Parks - there are probably 12 year old kids playing at various clubs around the country that have better handling skills and his eyes!!!!!! Do they not work!!How many times did he give a pass that was either intercepted or blocked by the Italians!!!!He has proved time and again that he is not good enough for the test arena and this is in part why Hadden should go - Continually involving someone who is consistently this bad. clearly Hadden does not have a grasp on what works and does not work........Rubbish absolutely rubbish.

Time to resign Haddock or be sacked. Unbelievably still trying to claim progress! He should be in politics he sees so little. Fact is we have went all the way backwards since the World Cup and for all the mumps about winger injuries we have managed to bring in decent replacements as we went - take a look you'll see they are playing at centre! Fact is wingers can't control games, they can only influence proceedings. The heart of control is with No 10. Haddock has banked the farm on Parks and it's been a losing bet. Unfortunately there are more than just Parks who have been living on their names rather than recent form and Hadden has been loyal to them all rather than be ruthless. Let's face it, Alistair Strokosh was clearly the form player before the tournament began but it took a media campaign and some injuries so that Hadden could palm him off as his own choice. Shame when you think we had the scrum-half of the tournament and an abundance of back row riches but couldn't capitalize. Shame we didn't have a Plan B. Shame to think if we had a decent coach we could have been challenging for a very open and winnable 6-Nations title instead of trying to dodge the spoon (again)!

I just thought....,

I think I've read this article every time Scotland have lost, Hadden claims to be making progress from a slow start. Everybody seems to swallow all the rubbish he spouts. Time for him to go. I would love to know what performance idicators he's working to, because if I delivered the results he does I would have been sacked along time ago.

The simple facts are Scotland finished second from bottom by 3 points, we finished bottom last year, scrapped through the world cup, at what point are we making progress?

What planet is Mr Hadden living on. He is clearly, like his buddy Danny Boy way out of his depth at this level. There is no way to my mind Wales have any better talent available to them than Scotland, but they have a quality coaching set up in place and at this level that is what makes the difference. I do not sense Hadden commands the sort of respect from the players the likes of Gatland and Edwards do and that is where the problems lie. For instance the Scottish back row trio that started teh game against England and Italy is as good as any other unit within the 6 Nations and in Paterson we have probably the best dead ball kicker there is at the moment. Add to that we have the best scrum half in this year's tournament and yet we still struggle to not win the wooden spoon. We have the ingredients alright, just the wrong chef - we have Worrall Thompson instead of Marcus Wareing cooking our dinner it seems to me !!!

The Hallucinist,

#5 Totally agree.

And look at Wales - no changes to squad that competed in World Cup - just a new coach that obiously coaches how to play good rugby.

Hadden's game plan includes negative rugby and if you're a back, don't run onto the ball at pace, just stand still or jog and then get creamed.

Scotland were more adventurous against Italy, but what did we have to lose?????
9

Scotch on the rocks,

London 17/03/2008 12:51:46
Everyone agrees on the source of the problem. The negative and incompetant selection policy for the last two games is well documented.

The problem is that the head coach cannot see what is so obvious to 99% of the contibutors to this website. When will he and the SRU listen; when will they collectively show a vision or strategy for a more enterprising future?
10

Rossyboy,

17/03/2008 12:53:00
He should do the honorable & best thing for the future of Scotland by falling on his Sword. If Ashton's job is uncertain after England were runners up in the RWC and 2nd in the 6nations, how can Hadden remain in place.A 40% win ratio is also pathetic, what is that a D or an E grade, what ever happened to ambition.
Playing the Ateam against the All blacks was also highly dissapointing

He seems like a genuinely nice guy but he is not ruthless enough for international rugby. His selection has been a joke and the backs attacking play is pathetic. You never see them coming on to the ball at pace which all the other sides seem able to do, hence the lack of tries. Even Italy are looking more of a threat in attack.I feel sorry for players like Blair, Taylor, Hogg and strokosch who have genuine class but are playing to a very limited gameplan.

Finally Parks should never play for Scotland again, too many mistakes and a total lack of commitment in the tackle is unnaceptable.
11

Cave!,

A very dark place. 17/03/2008 13:08:41
Dan Parks has played 42 times for Scotland. This statistic is a disgrace. Practically before ever game I have bemoaned his selection and been vindicated by his piss-poor performances. Ross, Godman and Paterson have all suffered as a result. Will Gregor and Jackson continue to suffer a similar fate at Glasgow?

He must never play for Scotland again. The same is true of Henderson and Southwell. We must start to play the likes of Cairns, De Luca and Evans in the backs.

Dougie Hall needs to be brought back in and Moray Low blooded in the forwards.

The main problem is Hadden though, his selection and tactics have been woeful. Our forwards have been adequate but only against England did they look motivated. We have no attacking instinct. Our backs have been poor, dire when Parks has been at 10.

Let us pray for better days ahead.

I am truly mystified by what is coming out of Hadden's mouth - was he watching a different game?

Other people have more eloquently stated the catastrophic failures of playing a substandard No10 (the Observer said "Parks resembles a Jack of One Trade and Master of None") - my heart goes out to Chris Patterson, I would not blame him for quitting the international game after the way he had been treated.

If my memory serves me correctly, Hadden told the team to "go out and enjoy yourselves, play some rugby" in those heady days of Feb 2006...what happened Frank??

Utterly utterly bewildered by the SRU and the coaches...
13

expat123,

In Hope 17/03/2008 13:18:40
Thing is - we all know what should happen. I remember feeling as desperate during Williams era. Enough has been said about the error strewn last few campaigns that include players out of position, out of form players picked irrespective, single mindedness on certain individuals (MDR, Parks etc), lack of ambition and risk, no fire in the side and hardness, substitutions for the sake of them (set your clock at 60 mins, not willing to give youngsters who show much promise a go (Cairns,Evans, ML, Blair etc) whilst giving a couple a go then they disappear into thin air (rennie - outstanding possibilities and genuine openside) - Rant over.
Point is what can we (if anything) do about it? I don't want to wait until ticket sales show our viewpoint. That would be as damaging to the scottish game as FH is now. How can our voice be heard? Do u think the SRU are aware of the majority view (sufficiently?)

Sorry Frank,
but you can't tell us at the beginning of the 6 Nations that we are good enough to win the competition and then, just because it suits you, say that we were in a dark place at the early part of the competition. All we have done is beat a very poor England team, even then we had to pray to the rain gods.
I dont know of any other world coach who would change his whole game plan one day before an International just because one of his wingers gets crocked. By picking Dan Parks instead of Chris Patterson you let every Italian know how we where going to play the game. They lived off his poor distribution all day. He is just to easy to read and therefore play against. Any one got a light, its bloody dark in here.
16

Foresight,

By the Water of Leith 17/03/2008 14:06:02
Hadden is now ready to take a seat in Holyrood with those of his ilk - he utterly believes his own spin whilst the rest of us know he is talking a load of tosh. Sadly a nice man who is far to cosy and luvy with the players. What Scotland needs now is a tough nut coach like Jim Telfer who the players are scared of but respect - then we might just get results.

The SRU this morning is offering tickets for the Autumn tests promising that "supporters will be treated to plenty of fast-paced rugby, thrilling rugby action..." A case of being in breach of trade descriptions if Hadden remains, I guess.
17

Francis,

17/03/2008 14:07:07
I take it this is Hadden's pre-emptive strike before his tournament review. In what other line of employment would it be considered acceptable to use the National Press in this fashion? I wonder how many of the players will be forced out this week to support his claim?

Quotation from the Telegraph:

"Rome is not exactly short of statues, but they could raise another one this morning to Dan Parks, the Scotland fly-half, whose woeful performance virtually gifted Italy their win. The official statistics showed that Parks had made seven errors in the game, the most significant of which was that he emerged from the dressing room in the first place.

The hapless Parks' hair-raising display included the wild passes that led to both of Italy's tries."

It is not just long suffering Scotland supports who think he is an eejit...
20

GrahamH,

Edinburgh 17/03/2008 14:48:50
Hadden ACTUALLY said this " not only did we dominate and control the game, but had we scored in the second half with some of the opportunities we created, then we could have gone on to record our best performance over here in Italy."

Dilussional! Di Rollo, Parks, kept playing when patently not up to it.

"Bad bounce of ball quotes cost us", type quotes.
Said showing progress - (only backwards).
Drops worlds most consistent kicker for first game!!

I still think he should have gone for playing reserves against NZ, robbing 60,000 of a hefty entrance fee.

No more chances, a wooden spoon followed by a very very nearly wooden spoon - got to go.

21

Another voice,

17/03/2008 15:01:46
Hadden was a good schools coach which was his level. Even then his school had the biggest rugby budget.

He did very little with an expensivley assembled edinburgh team which again had the biggest budget in scotland and one of the biggest in the celtic league.

With that sort of track record hadden was never going to do anything in international rugby.

We need winners both on and of the pitch. We need a coach who has competed and won at the top level who can pass the formula onto the young players. One thing the last two games have shown us is that we do have some decent players all they need is direction.

Extra comment why is parks so concerned of his image (like growing cool sideboards and a cool beard thingy) and not of his performances. You wouldn't of had the likes of David Sole, Roy Laidlaw and Gavin Hstings worrying about how they looked. Parks is an A1 A@"£hole

Unbelievable, has FH lost touch with reality? Scotland played 5 lost 4 Won 1, how and by what measure is that progression? Its the players I feel sorry for having to listen to this drivel and make like they agree.
As for Parks my old school coach would have put an arm round his shoulder, ushered him into the shower, told him to put his boots in his bag and never ever bring them out within 100 miles of a rugby pitch.
Oh Allan Jacobson for No10, he would have to be an improvement!
Has Haddock quit/been sacked yet? PLEASE

I really do wonder what games Frank was watching, were regressing under his stewardship.

Do us all a favour and go now with some dignity and allow Scotland time to rebuild for the Autumn tests. He's been found wanting tactically, in the first few games you could set your watch by the time he sent on his substitutes, only when he changed the composition of the bench did the timing change and this was no doubt due to injuries.

Personally I thought only having two backs on the the bench would catch up with us and against Italy it did. It was obvious that Dan Parks had lost it in the second half after the inch perfect pass he gave to Parisse! (Though you could argue he'd lost it from the first minute of the French game!!)

If it wasn't for the elements against England we probably would have lost that game too.

If he won't go, the SRU need to get some balls and bite the bullet themselves.
