AN EMOTIONAL breakdown on live television, during which a responsible interviewer should have pulled the plug? Or the latest calculated outburst in her ongoing divorce battle with Sir Paul McCartney and a bid to raise the price for her story?
Heather Mills McCartney's rant on morning television became the talk of the country yesterday. As she called for a public campaign against British tabloids, she compared herself to Diana, Princess of Wales as a victim of an abusive press, and the sub
ject of death threats. And she said she had left "a box of evidence" in case "something happens to me".

Chris Horrie, a media writer and lecturer, was unsympathetic. "She's auctioning her story and needs publicity," he said. "It's self-serving nonsense. This woman comes from the heart of showbusiness."

But Charles Fletcher, chairman of MediaWise, a charity promoting responsible journalism, said after viewing the interview: "It should have been stopped. Clearly, she's distraught. That was somebody losing it on air. She came across as seriously unwell."

In the 15-minute interview on GMTV, Mills McCartney claimed she was close to suicide. She said she had received death threats and wondered whether she might be "revered" like Linda McCartney, Sir Paul's late first wife, if the "death threats came true".

Often turning to two file folders full of press cuttings and legal letters, Mills McCartney told interviewer Fiona Phillips that 4,400 abusive articles had been written about her. She claimed topless modelling photos from her past were recycled and ludicrous stories peddled in "18 months of abuse".

Her voice sometimes breaking as she gesticulated, Mills McCartney often interrupted or talked over Ms Phillips.

She said: "I've had worse press than a paedophile, than a murderer, and I've done nothing but charity for 20 years."

But she also dropped hints about a "certain corner" spinning stories against her and how she could be forced to tell her story. "There is such fear of a certain party of the truth coming out."

Mills McCartney claimed to owe legal fees of £1.5 million, and dismissed stories claiming she had asked for £100 million or £20 million in a divorce settlement as "made up".

She said she was campaigning to change media legislation and had launched a petition to the European Parliament.

Mills McCartney showed a film clip of paparazzi circling round her and her home. "I live in a prison, I will have to fight back or go insane," she said.

"They've called me a whore, a gold-digger, a fantasist, a liar, the most unbelievably hurtful things, and I've stayed quiet for my daughter."

Mills McCartney, who had a leg amputated, said: "My sister was crying her eyes out because Jordan and Peter Andre did a joke [on TV] on Sunday and I've six amputee girls crying their eyes out because they're getting bullied at school because people are joking about the loss of my limb.

"I am the one that is abused daily. I have protected Paul for this long and I am trying to protect him, but I am being pushed to the edge and I don't want my daughter when she is 12 going on the internet and reading this totally one-sided story.

"What did the paparazzi do to Diana? They chased her and they killed her."

Roy Greenslade, a media writer, said: "I don't think we should take it seriously. She has a long history of emotional outbursts which are lacking in logic and common sense. She seeks publicity at certain times, and this is another example."

DOGGED BY CONTROVERSY

HEATHER Mills has been at the centre of controversy ever since she began her relationship with Sir Paul McCartney, the former Beatle.

The couple met at an awards ceremony in 1999 and she quickly faced accusations of being a gold-digger with her eye on the star's £800 million fortune.

Sir Paul married the former model - who lost a leg after she was hit by a police motorcyclist in 1993 - in June 2002. Their daughter Beatrice was born in October 2003.

But Sir Paul's children were less than happy. His daughter Stella, in particular, was said to loathe Ms Mills.

She also remained an unpopular figure with the press and the public - so much so that Sir Paul felt moved to hit back at her critics in a statement on her website.

Despite his public declarations of love, the relationship was said to be dogged by rows. When they finally split in May last year, lawyers speculated she could get up to £70 million.

The divorce battle has become increasingly bitter, with Ms Mills claiming that "huge powers" were out to destroy her in their divorce battle.

#1 aip ... completely agree. Women like her use the media all the time when it suits them. And let's face it (yes it's cliche time) you don't move into the top of a high-rise condo when you have vertigo!

I never win at gambling.

But had I had the opportunity to place a bet with the betting companies.

My bet would have been she marries Paul Mccartney.

Marriage to lasts no longer than a few years.

She will make sure she as a child just before the divorce.

The child was for added security to set her up for for life and beyond.

That was the bet I wanted to place.

But then everyone knew that

His daughter Stella knew that to.

Now big deal she been doing charity work for 20 years.

Well she had nothing else to do, we would all like to do that, but we have to work for a living.

She not only wants all the money in the world, we now see this wimpering gold digger looking for sympathy for god sake.

Way before she got married and was not so much in the limelight she was being interviewed I never knew who she was then

she was very arrogant, and very rude to the person interviewing her

I thought then I dont like you, you are a very nasty person. and so she's shown her true colours

Stella you were spot on, pity your father never had your insight

Its a pity she was given that publicity interview, which no doubt is the build up for Heather Mills tells all book.

she's poisonous and deserves all the grief she gets - this will backfire on her again and she'll move to america and moan to Oprah instead....

I watched the interview and I really wasn't sure what to think. She appeared to be genuinely distraught and desperate, but who knows? I don't think Fiona Phillips knew what to do with her because she was on such a rant. One thing she is right about though is that the media have too much power and that they can build people up to a great height one minute and then drag them down to a crashing low the next, making their lives a misery. I believe one of the papers have a front page headline today saying that she had the audacity to compare herself to Kate McCann. She didn't. She gave the McCann case as an example of how the tabloids publicly attack people when it suits them. Not quite the same thing! It's a prime example of journalists distorting, or taking out of context, what was actually said.

While I'm no fan of Ms Mills, I'd sign her petition to stop the media hounding people and persistently distorting and sensationalising things and getting away with it. Love her or hate her, in my opinion she has a valid point where that's concerned.

i cannot believe how nasty people can be to a a woman that YES have done charity for 20 years.
sir paul was not for sure forced to marry heather he surely old enough and mature enough to decide for him self.
stella is only a spoil brat that used her famous father's name to be a stylist ...
to a comment on the south African dude..
heather could be sitting at home minding her own business and not doing charity.
off course she is searching for publicity in order to make sure people knows her in order to be an ambassador for charity
she was hit by a police motorbike for god sake and had a leg amputated she is what u call an handicap.
i worked with disable people and she definitely an inspiration for those that do not want to live because of loosing the ability of moving .
she is showing how someone can still working, dancing, and even be a mother.
what a stupid comment that she had a child to secure her asset?? being a woman i can only understand the desire of having a child with the person you are in love with.
furthermore, sir paul should recognized the good time he had with heather. all marriages have their ups and downs and being in the public eye is not easy. surely heather did not signed up for all the grief the press is causing her.
no one deserve bad karma ...but im not that surprised because we live in a society where we praise the brain less but beautiful, vain but rich.
what jordan did to heather was disgusting she surely would not mock up a cancer person!! she made a comment on how heather takes her leg on and off according to bad or good press towards her .. oh well jordan does the same with her kid Harvey .. and what about having a kid with a footballer, before that jordan was not that famous she was living in a flat in Brighton now she is living in a huge house with a stable with nannies looking after her kids. jordan should shut her cake hole coz she uses the press even more than heath

PJ,

It is amazing how she goes around manipulating the media, to have a go at the media!

When only last week she was courting the press by saying she wants Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon to take the starring role of her life story also in interviews with US chat show host Larry King and she is also lining up an appearance on Oprah Winfrey's show.

11

Silence of the Yams,

The only genuine part of her is the plastic leg!

12

Robb,

01/11/2007 11:48:04

I didn't see the interviews, but from the glimpses of the newspapers today, it seems to have caused quite a stir. She's either a prime manipulator as is claimed, or she has made a big mistake by appearing on TV in that state.... or perhaps both. Anyway, it probably meets the purposes of both parties. She has the publicity, and the tabloids flog their papers by the thousand.

I agree with number 9 though. The leg jokes are pretty crass and childish. If people want to have a go at somebody, try to be a bit more intelligent about it, instead of targeting their disability, race, or whatever.

Proximaking,

Take a step back. Eight years ago would she have been happy to have a healthy child and £10million in the bank? Igf the answer is yes she should accept £10million and leave it at that. Paul will make sure his daughter is well looked after so Heather needs no money on that score. I know a lot of people who have done solid charity work for 30 or 40 years and they don't expect to get £60million in the back pocket for their efforts. If she was acting she is a headcase, if she wasn't acting she is a headcase. The adults can look after themselves in this, even the insane ones, but God help that wee girl in amongst this mess. Speaking of Trump I believe he made Ivana an offer "she couldn't refuse" when she was starting down a similar road, and she didn't refuse that offer. Maybe Paul could "Trump" Heather in this manner, ...... maybe he has already offered to hence the Diana type revelation that "they are out to get me" meaning kill me. Sounds like a blatant use of the Diana trial to get some more money ........ Steve Austin only got $6million to fix him up and he had a lot more than a busted leg. We can rebuild her, .... for £10million.

I actualy feel sorry for her.

Agree entirely with no. 6 (yolanda). Nice to get an objective comment. I never judge anyone on media reports/comments - so have not formed an opinion. All I know is that her remarks about the tabloid press are spot on. I stopped buying a newspaper several years ago when 'Today' quit publication. Heather gave the name of a website where you can sign a petition to limit the power of the tabloid press - can anyone tell me the name?

8 AMERETTA

We hear nothing but her charity work by gad she makes sure we all know about it.

I would like to know just whats she does for charity.

Give me the unsung hero's working abroad in the poor African countries, looking after the people with aids etc, working under terrible conditions .
every day, year in, year out .

Don't those people count with you because they are not so called celebs

They are not swanning up in some large fancy car stepping outside showing the camera's what a wonderful person am.

Then now James drive me home I have a cocktail party tonght.

When her book comes out she wont mention the sleazy life she lead particulary with the notorious gun runners, that will not do.

She now thinks she hounded like princess Diana

Well watching the report on Dianas death she kidding of course.

She will never know what its like to be harressed by the press.

Run of the Mill will have to come up with another gimmick soon to make sure the press remember her.

what a disgrace she was on the Larry King show.

If she had to have a normal artificial leg that others with the same disabiltity have to use perhaps she may not have been showing off.

You can guarantee that cost a fortune that most people could not afford

No 8 dont' give us that rubbish about her good charity work.

She does nothing that not giving her ego a boost.

Looking at her on the news she looks the person she is. very sly, loves herself, conceited, and not to be trusted.

Unfortunately without the child of Paul Mccartney she would be forgotten , but like I said that child was part of her master plan so she can pop up when her ego requires the Mills boost

They do say that all publicity is good publicity, regardless of how bad it is, so maybe she's got what she wanted yet again. It will only increase the bidding war for the book... and the movie... and the many interviews that will follow. She knows how the media works. She knows how to milk it, whether she approves of how it operates or not.

Delboy, you're a plonker if you think it's fine to laugh at somebody's disability if you don't like them. Grow up lad.

Please dont mock peoples disabilities, that is a cruel comment. Many Valiant men and wimen and children have missing limbs. And no matter what anyone say,s about this woman she helps a lot of Children cope with their loss of a limb. Like Kylie and others help with cancer.. do you have the same disability. Moron.

There is always two sides to a story. But to make up your mind about both of them. The truth must be told. and I wont be buying the book/ Because it is none of my business

Arthur,

Already digging under the Forth 01/11/2007 13:43:10

None of this is rocket science, and in the words of yankee claptrap we all need to get a life, our own.
This is a personal family tragedy, which is none of
business.
Yes the press distorts manipulates exaggerates etc in order to sell copy and accuracy and truth are the casualties, which is another reason for my not having read this or any other article on the matter or seen the television interview.
There is a simple solution to the dilema it is
S=((F/X)N)/2 where S =settlement, F = Maccas personal fortune, X = The length of time taken to raise X, n = Length of marriage.
I wonder too if anyone recalls the negative press and public opinion of Linda Eastman in the early days of that relationship, and how happy they were together in spite of it.

24

Delboy,

But it is alright if the Amputee makes jokes about them selfs. But ask them how they really feel. I was in plaster up to my knee on my left leg, and I did not like bumming my way around, and mine was only temporary. And going upstairs to the bathroom was not funny, having to keep stopping to pull up my pantys was embarrasing. Although my Husband thought that was funny, No I stick to my opinion

I watched with disbelief the interview she gave ( eh sorry wide eyed rant) and saw some real meanness in some of the diatribe. She constantly referred to her Bea as MY daughter ( and Pauls as well darlin) and by letting us see that she is keeping press cuttings as evidence (???) of a witch hunt well all I can say is luv......sidle up to the other 3 in Macbeth and start stirring.......the bottom line is that because you want to publish the book and make more money than ever you have fallen into the trap of believing that you are the one wronged against......when in actual fact by keeping quiet during the divorce Sir Paul comes out of it all smelling of roses........When she has dug the hole deep enough someone should be there to tip her in............plenty volunteers methinks

It would be really interesting to know how many of the above who have posted comments are perfect? We all make mistakes and to feel you can berate someone because you feel you have that right is nothing short of disgraceful. You don't even know the woman, nor Sir Paul for that matter so why do you feel you can speak in judgement? Leave them both alone and use your anger on something that has an opportunity to respond.
