Berlusconi in 'showgirl' gaffe

EMMA Marcegaglia is the head of Italy's industrialists and considers herself a hard-nosed businesswoman. So she was not best pleased yesterday when prime minister Silvio Berlusconi joked that she was like a "showgirl".
In his address to the annual meeting of Italy's elite industrial group, he jokingly used the word "velina" to refer to Ms Marcegaglia. It has become a buzzword in Italy for young, attractive women seeking public office.

Later, at another meeting, she said: "Frankly, I have nothing against showgirls, but I prefer (to be known as] a serious person, a leader, a free and steady person."
