SCOTLAND on Sunday's Christmas Appeal online auction has raised more than £8,000, thanks to the generosity of readers.
A flurry of last-minute bidding took the total above the amount raised in a similar exercise last year to provide funds for the British charity Sightsavers International.

The top lot this year, raising £610, was the chance for three golfers to pla
y a round at the exclusive Loch Lomond course.

A helicopter trip for four to the St Andrews Bay resort, including lunch, also proved popular, with the winning bid reaching £600.

Someone needing good publicity bid £470 to have their image polished by Platform PR, and many bidders wanted to make their mark on literature by being written in as a character in a Christopher Brookmyre novel. The price of immortality was £455.

Four people are in for a riotous evening after bagging Scotland on Sunday columnist Hardeep Singh Kohli for £415. He promises to cook and entertain but not necessarily at the same time.

Fashionistas, meanwhile, pushed the bidding up to £310 for Mulberry's iconic Mabel bag, and The Girlie Night In at the Cameron House Hotel on Loch Lomond raised £255.

Of the 58 lots offered, however, the one that attracted most bids was the chance to have a portrait photograph taken by one of Scotland on Sunday's award-winning staff photographers. Almost 100 bids were logged by online auction company QXL and the winner paid £160.

The money raised by the auction will be added to the donations that have been made directly to Sightsavers International and the results of our inaugural Bring 50p to Work Day, in which companies and organisations were asked to hold a fund-raising day. All who took part will be credited in the newspaper and donors this week include the Practice Education Unit (NHS Lothian) and the Group Purchasing Department (Royal Bank of Scotland).

The money raised will help Sightsavers prevent blindness in eye-care projects around the world. Last month, Scotland on Sunday highlighted projects in Tanzania, where in some remote villages up to half the population are suffering from the eye condition trachoma, partly because of the lack of funds for prevention and treatment.

Caroline Harper, Sightsavers' chief executive, said: "We're absolutely thrilled by the generous support shown by individuals and companies alike this year and can't thank Scotland on Sunday enough for its continued commitment to prevent people in poorer parts of the world going needlessly blind."

Donations can still be made directly to Room SOSO7, Sightsavers International, PO Box 17160, Edinburgh, EH12 6WF or by calling the 24-hour donation line (0800 0892020), quoting ref SOSO7, or by visiting www.sightsavers.org

queen_sandra8,

But honestly 30/12/2007 09:51:34

Wouldn't the right thing be to return Scotland's things to Scotland......and Greece's things to Greece?

#3. And of course to the true genetic descendants of the original owner-creators?

A bit of health advice, given the incidence of macular degeneration in this country & the lack of help given, try taking on a regular basis for prevention beta-carotinoids like lutein (best with zeaxanthin). Like ensuring that the calcium in your diet as well as exercise militate against fragility of bones in later life, I understand extra lutein & zeaxanthin in the diet may be a good way of preventing macular degeneration, although studies of this are as yet not extensive.

Further to the above, our eyes in '1st world' countries may also be at danger from too much exposure to direct light from extensive use of computer screens. My introduction to the -- successful -- use of lutein was as a consequence of painful vision after working on databases, particularly those that use small fonts.

You are getting off topic AS USUAL my dear.

Some of the offerings sounded very enticing indeed -especially the Girlie Night at the Cameron House Hotel and the photographic portrait done by one of the Scotsman's excellent photo-artists.

Glad the charity raised so much money for a good cause.

Put down the hatchet and work with me. 30/12/2007 19:01:45

Jealousy will get you nowhere. Hurts a bit though, eh?

That Scottish Bruce armour and shield are buried on some property in the US, owned by "true genetic descendants of the original owner" here in the US. One may be inclined to question why a Bruce coming to the US would take said items of precious and priceless historical value out of the country of origin. One would also have to question WHY this Bruce even had said items in his possession to begin with - such as........he must have been of the DIRECT LINE and would have also had a legitimate Royal Stuart claim by the Bruce line to the Scottish throne, as legitimate as anyone else's. How interesting. (Time for some reading and research. When, exactly, was the claim from this part of the line of Bruce to the Scottish Throne usurped?)

Rumor has it that this Bruce also brought with him some of that "very, very old" stuff that was taken out of Greece, and that it, too, is buried on that property.

There are older Bruce descendants in the US who know and remember that armour, a shield, and some of that really old "stuff" from Greece were brought to the US, and were in possession of their Grandfather Bruce, buried on his property for safety. Great-Grandfather Bruce died unexpectedly, by accident. Family members have searched and dug FOR YEARS trying to find this stuff. Somebody, somewhere, knew where the stuff was - and would not tell because they got screwed out of the family inheritance. That person left a very special, secret map with his daughter, depicting five spots where things are buried. I AM THAT DAUGHTER. (He indicated to me one spot he called, "the best one". My guess is that would be the shield and armour because along with its considerable value, it would have been deeply sentimental to him.)

And I have carried this Royal Secret with me for many years, not understanding the magnitude of "this little map" - because as I were kept pushed out of the Bruce family for

4,5 - Try using some of your medical advise and pharmaceutical research on your own self. Better yet, shove it up your a##.

#6 - Your comment exemplifies exactly why the Scottish people, not to mention a certain Scottish family, are going without precious items they could have recovered many years ago. Priorities, values and morals are so twisted and out of whack it is pathetic.

Quite sad because the ineptness of those in position to put down the hatchet and work with me, affects the entire country of Scotland.

Why would someones repeat the same things for YEARS and keep expecting to get a different result? THAT is insanity. The "hard-ball" games has not worked in all these years; it ain't gonna work now. I am not asking anyone for anything, simply making a statement. I will not boff the secret for less than a five million dollar reward - up front.

QUEEN 8 HAS SPOKEN,

-Sorry, had your chance. 30/12/2007 20:46:28

Yes, I know, you'd like me to stop posting. We can do that.

No one has the sense to put down the hatchet and work with me while they have the chance. That's fine. I am starting to believe that perhaps things buried a hundred years or longer are meant to be left where they are, and left alone.

I've been kept pushed out of The Family all of my life. What I've come to understand is that THEY are the ones who would have been lucky to have known ME - AND ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO KISS MY ROYAL SCOTTISH A**.

OK. I am out of here. If you are that stupid - then go without. I HOPE ALL OF SCOTLAND ENJOYS KNOWING WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN RECOVERED - BUT WASN'T BECAUSE OF TWISTED, IDIOTIC PRIORITIES AND STUNTED ARCHAIC THOUGHT PROCESS!!!!!!!! And, hey, f#*k all of you.

Queen 8

You really do ramble on at times with mindless gibberish. And your latest nicety to tell us all to f**k off demonstrates that you are either a very bitter woman or a frustrated DRAG QUEEN!
