McKie speaks of hope over inquiry

THE father of a policewoman accused of leaving her fingerprint at a murder scene said he hoped a public inquiry would ensure the affair was never repeated.
Iain McKie spoke out ahead of an initial hearing for the inquiry into the Shirley McKie case, which starts in Glasgow on Monday.

Mr McKie said: "Shirley and I will do all that we can to ensure that the inquiry achieves its goals, reveals what happened over the past 11 years and generates recommendations that will help ensure it never happens again."

Ms McKie, a former policewoman from Troon, Ayrshire, was accused of leaving her fingerprint at the Kilmarnock home of the murder victim, Marion Ross, in 1997. She challenged the findings of experts and was cleared of perjury.

Shirley McKie went through years of hell as a result of proven incomptence and vicious innuendo. Something stinks in your post, A, Scott.

We all know it is Fiona McBride the rest have accepted their punishment and moved on, but she wanted more than the £70.000 she was offered.

Agree with the comments - good luck to the McKies. Their courage and tenacity has impressed a nation.

What we need is legislation placing a legal responsibility on those working within and around the criminal justice system, including purported 'experts' to disclose any actual or likely miscarriage of justice that they have become aware of in the course of their duties, or any policy precedures or practices likely to cause such. We also need within this, a ban on senior police officers making dodgey media briefiings designed to mislead and cause prejudice, and which could also contibute to miscarraiges of justice, and place unfair pressure on innocent people to plead guilty. These should be made criminal offences, and should apply equally to officers of the court (i.e. lawyers).

This would serve as a deterent against abuse of powers, which is sadly all too apparent in our system.

I hope this enquiry is able to reveal the truth and put an end to this long running saga. Several people have had damage done to their reputations, and I hope this enquiry will allow the voices of the Fingerprint experts who have been treated like criminals throughout to finally be heard

Have any of the previous posters read any of the Justice 1 submissions or alternatively viewed any of the oral evidence. This was the one occasion that the Fingerprint Experts were able to speak freely without being shackled by their employers or threatened by legal action by that persuer of Justice - Iain McKie. There is so much more to this case but where are the investigative journalists? All in Scotland prefer sitting at desks being spoon fed by media savvy individuals like Iain McKie. The truth is already out there but no-one is listening because they were conned into backing who they thought was a surefire winner in wee Shirley. The Inquiry should shame Kilmarnoch CID, Scottish Justice System,all political parties and also the McKies.

it is a certainty that the truth will never be known
no matter how many enquiries are made,there is a sense of something dark and murky
I believe that Ms McKie is totally innocent,however,
no matter what is said there will still be enough suspicion for the case to rumble on for a very long time
