CRIME is expensive. It costs taxpayers about £40,000 a year to keep a prisoner locked up, and our prison population is over 8,000. There is a building programme for three new jails and extensive renovations for older prisons to make them "fit for purpose".
Also, due to the poor prisoner conditions, for example slopping out, there have been compensation payouts to prisoners amounting to over £9 million. All this comes from the public purse, and taxpayers' money is a touchy subject these days.

There was some 11 million pounds put aside for renovations but it was taken by Jim Wallace to set up his drugs enforcement agency (never to be heard of again) The compensation claims cost far more than the reovation would have cost
It is my understanding that the 4 prison which have been closed did not have slopping out as their sanitary arrangements were up to standard

send them all to afganastan that will sort them if they survive then thats the slate wiped clean if they dont then thats tough at least the prisons will be empty
