A DANGEROUS prisoner has handed himself in following seven days on the run from an open prison, bringing a nationwide manhunt to an end.

Brian Martin, nicknamed "The Hawk", walked into Kinross police station yesterday.

The convicted gunman's disappearance had threatened to cost Kenny MacAskill his Cabinet post as opposition politicians demanded the justice secretary's head.

T
his latest prisoner to abscond from Castle Huntly prison near Dundee put the open jail once again at the centre of controversy, two years after an inmate went on the run and raped a teenage girl.

Mr MacAskill is tomorrow expected to issue a parliamentary statement on the episode, which has triggered calls for a fresh review of open prisons.

Martin had been serving ten years for firing a gun inside a Fife house, in a dispute over a car. He escaped for two weeks after the offence in 2005. At the time, the 51-year-old, from Ballingry, Fife, was out on licence from a 12-year sentence for assault, robbery and firearms offences.

Every port in the UK was put on alert after Martin absconded on 18 May. It was thought he may have been hiding with relatives or friends in Fife, but police had gleaned few clues.

On Wednesday they made a direct plea to Martin to hand himself in. The tactic appeared to work, and Martin gave himself up around 2:30pm yesterday.

Tayside Police Detective Chief Inspector Bruce Kerr, who led the hunt, thanked the public for their help.

Martin is expected to appear at Perth Sheriff Court today.

Mr MacAskill last night praised police for their handling of the case. "Our police officers do an excellent job on behalf of the law-abiding public, and they have demonstrated that once again in the professional way they closed the net on Brian Martin," he said.

Opposition politicians expressed relief that Martin had been caught – but insisted Mr MacAskill should be held to account for the decision to send him to the open prison in the first place.

Richard Baker, Labour's justice spokesman, said: "Time is running out for Kenny MacAskill, who has shown he is not up to the job of protecting the public. Quite frankly, it would be in everybody's interests if he apologised and got out."

Mr MacAskill defended his record on open prisons, pointing out that numbers of inmates absconding had fallen since the SNP came to power.

"However, no-one disputes that in any system there will be failures of assessment, and there will be an investigation into the circumstances of this case," he said.

Resign, MacAskill! You should have caught this miscreant and slapped the cuffs on personally.

A new series coming to STV, starring Labour's Justice spokesman: "Baker the Bounty Hunter".

Based on long-running trashumentary "Dog the Bounty Hunter", this ground-breaking series will follow former NUS President Richard Baker around the schemes and dog tracks of Scotland, as he traces and apprehends dangerous psychopathic criminals such as George "The Baron" Foulkes, Wendy "The Gub" Alexander, Alastair "The Flipper" Darling, and Eric "The Claimer" Joyce. Contains graphic scenes of larceny and bawheidedness which some viewers may find disturbing.

A WartsClements Production for Scottish Tolyvision.

Obviously MacKaskill must go, since he's in charge and the buck stops [momentarily] there. But then his lord and master Alex Salmond has to go too - that's where the buck finally stops. But while we're at it the whole government should stand down, as aiders and abettors of prison breaks and so forth.
On the other hand, if Mackaskill is sincere in his promise of an investigation, perhaps we'll see an overhaul [much needed] of the open prison system. The person who authorised the transfer should be hauled over the coals. I wonder what happened to the person last time, two years ago??

I do not think he is personally responsible for this escapade, This is more a prison issue in which some Governor should resign.

After all how many prisoners escaped under Cathy "No Justice" Jamieson and labour.

He should resign though for other reasons, one of which he is a lawyer and thinks we owe a debt of Gratutude to the Law Society, creating a conflict of interest for those seeking to complain about the Law Society and lawyers in general.

He refuses to review SCCRC after 10 years despite there being an assumption they would be reviewed after 5 years.

It strikes me as funny that a heid the baw like Richard Baker is calling for MacAskill to resign for being "not up to the job of protecting the public" yet he's quite happy to let Gordon Brown, et al shaft the country as a whole by claiming for ludicrous expenses.

My local MP (Labour) claimed over £160,000 on expenses last year.

That's more than 4 times the national average salary on EXPENSES !!!!

Charlatans, theives and blaggards every last one of them.

As Billy Connolley once said "Don't vote, it only fcuking encourages them !!"

Maybe we'll get peace and quiet now, instead of listening to the sanctimonious Mr Magoo, otherwise known as the Tory Justice spokesman.

"DOH" why did the "Hawk" just hand himself in? Why not go out in a blaze of glory like in some "Redneck "town in the deep south. What an anti-climax,I bet if he was called the "Falcon" or the "Eagle" things would have turned out differant! More of a "Plover" than a "Hawk" in the end.Still there's one born every minute....

#10 basicly once some of the good ladies of Kelty had indulged him and he had drank his fill of Buckfast and cali special brew he handed himself in. Bit much to ask Fife police to round him up.

News just in. There is another dangerous person on the run.

Ian 'the desperado' gray has been missing from the Scottish Parliament when asked why he uses tax payers money to pay for an office charged at three times the going rate.

Gray is always available to mention 'the hawk', ten million times in three questions to Alex Salmond (the hawk being a guy so dangerous that he handed himself in without a struggle) but has no comment on what is going on with our public money he is ripping off.

The aforementioned office is actually owned by 'new labour', another matter apparently not worth mentioning.

I think ian gfray should either explain himself or resign.

''the hawk'' had better watch out - Bill Aitken will definitely be campaigning for the death penalty for turning yourself in now.

10 Yes that's rubbish isn't it. Why didn't he go out in a hail of bullets like a Sam Peckinpah movie. What a wimp.
