JOHN Swinney, the finance secretary, was yesterday told to forget his plans for a local income tax unless he made big compromises.
Opposition parties hardened their positions against the proposal to replace the council tax with a 3p centrally set tax as the consultation on the proposal closed.

The Greens, whose two MSPs will be crucial in a final vote, say they would rather keep the council tax.

But Mr Swinney vowed to press on with the plan.

Fine, Mr Swinney. Press on regardless. It’s your funeral.

Alex Salmond’s spokesman: “Let us be clear that the local income tax will be 3p, not any more or less.”

SNP statement: “We shall set a rate of 3p in the pound for all local authorities in the first instance. In the longer term we will move towards allowing local authorities greater flexibility in setting the local income tax rate.”

John Swinney: “90 per cent of Scots would benefit from our proposals”

SNP consultation document: “Our analysis estimates that in 2007-08, under a LIT, 67% of Scottish households would have experienced an increase in net income.”

The only way to do this is bring back the poll tax.

It was the fairest way.

One of the reasons why the public are reported to welcome the abolition of CT and a 3% hike in income tax is because the 3% rate is a big tax-cut.

It dosen't look like it will be voted through, so why not cut CT by the proposed 280MM, instead?. The government could also give all retired people a 100% CT rebate, as per LIT.

Can we have these as fall-back measures?

Why has The Scotsman printed this nonsense every day this week? Do they realy think that by doing so, the government will shelve the policy?

Its obvious that the opposition and the London Government are so worried about the LIT that they are getting all their friends (so called) to speak against it.

LIT will start a revolution in England when its seen how benificial it is. If the Labour Party are so confident that it will not work then let the SNP go ahead with it and dig a hole for themselves (that would be to the Labour's advantage - wouldn't it?).

Notice that the English are already singing the praises of SNP initiatives and want them for themselves. This will be another one.

I hope Swinney succeeds in winnnig round the Lib Dems and pushing through his NatLIT.

For then we shall see if it can be done on 3p, and we'll see if it is legal - cos if it ain't, you can bet a heap of us will be non-payers!

Personally, I striongly suspect Swinney hopes it will fail.

Then he can blame everyone (including Westminster for holding back CT rebate) for its demise.

Whilst secretly thanking them for saving the SNP from its own Poll Tax.

On one hand i want
