Salmond calls for Uefa party in Manchester

Published Date: 04 May 2008
ALEX Salmond last night urged Manchester to throw a party for Rangers fans, suggesting Old Trafford should be opened to ticketless fans to watch their team in the Uefa Cup final on big screens.
The First Minister called on the host city to "be positive" towards Rangers supporters after police and the local council said only those with tickets would be welcome for the game against Zenit St Petersburg.

The match, which takes place a week o
n Wednesday, will be played at the City of Manchester Stadium, but less than a fifth of the 100,000 Rangers fans expected to travel will have tickets.

That means up to 85,000 Rangers supporters will be left to their own devices and, with Manchester City Council refusing to put up big screens for ticketless fans, there are increasing fears over potential crowd trouble.

Scotland on Sunday learned yesterday that several senior Strathclyde Police officers believe using Old Trafford to allow the fans to watch the game would be an ideal way to combat many of the problems.

Last night, the First Minister said he, too, welcomed that idea.

A spokesman for Salmond said: "The suggestion of opening Old Trafford and erecting big screens there is certainly something worth considering."

Ever since Rangers qualified for the final last Thursday, there have been concerns voiced by officials in Manchester about them travelling to the city.

Police and council chiefs have said there will not be any facilities for ticketless fans in an effort to keep them away.

But Salmond believes this is the wrong approach. His spokesman said: "As Glasgow has shown in recent years, hosting a major European final can be a great thing for a city and can bring benefits.

"We would urge Manchester to be positive about the prospect of fans coming from Scotland for the game and Strathclyde Police have a lot of expertise to share in this respect.

"Anything that the Scottish Government can do we will do to make things run smoothly and help in the sharing of expertise. "

Dougie Dick, a spokesman for the London Rangers Supporters' Club, said fans would travel to Manchester whatever the police advice.

"I think opening Old Trafford would be a great idea and would help the supporters and the city of Manchester too.

"It makes a lot of sense because everyone who is a Rangers supporter will be down there that day for the game, no matter what anyone says."

One senior Strathclyde officer said the Old Trafford idea "simply made perfect sense". "Even if you only had three sides of the ground open with big TV screens at the other, the fact that the stadium could take around 50,000 supporters – up to 75% of those due to attend – would be an ideal move.

"It would allow the fans to be properly stewarded and prevent excess drinking and would make it much easier for Greater Manchester Police to control."

It is expected that Strathclyde Police will tomorrow start looking for volunteers to help their colleagues south of the border on the big match day.

The force insider said: "It makes sense for there to be as many Scottish officers down there as possible because we have had years of experience of handling such games.

"You will have up to 100,000 Rangers' fans in the city all wanting a bevvy and many without a ticket and we know how to handle that situation better than anyone."

The fact the game is being played in England means that because there are not any border controls, the authorities are powerless to prevent anyone from going, apart from the handful of Rangers fans who are currently under football banning orders.

The police insider said: "It is ironic, throughout all the club's games abroad this season there has not been a scrap of trouble and hardly any arrests."

The risk of problems has been exacerbated because of the violent reputation of the followers of their Russian opponents'.

Zenit fans have a reputation for having a hard-core hooligan backing, many of whom hold far-right tendencies. During their side's 2-0 home win over Marseilles in the competition earlier this year, St Petersburg supporters – known as 'the Gremlins' – hung a toy monkey from the terraces wearing a replica French top and repeatedly targeted the visiting team's black players.

Better to open Ibrox, where the atmosphere will be electric, than to waste time and money going to Old Trafford.

BTW Senga, it was the suggestion of Strathclyde Police, not Salmond's - he merely ran with their suggestion.

Why should Man Utd lay on their stadium for what will by this time next month have become 300,000 Rangers supporters?

I'm not at all surprised Greater Manchester police don't want ticketless Rangers fans descending on their city. A Rangers friendly match in Bolton was cancelled because they didn't want any Rangers fans at all in their beat. No doubt they have close links with the Catalan Police who can tell them all about the mayhem left in the wake of Ranger fans in November last year.

I'm sure if Greater Manchester Police had anything to do with it, the game would be moved as far away from Manchester as possible.

Manchester here we come,

Glasgow 04/05/2008 01:55:33
James - I feel for you :-)

"Why should Man Utd lay on their stadium for what will by this time next month have become 300,000 Rangers supporters?"
-James are you using the Seville calculator for that figure?

"No doubt they have close links with the Catalan Police who can tell them all about the mayhem left in the wake of Ranger fans in November last year."

- James again explain what mayhem there was? There was some litter dropped - hardly crime of the century and when you consider we had 0 arrests out of the 20,000 that travelled, that is fantastic considering there was 2 arrests from the 10,000 Celtic fans that travelled.

If you want to discuss behaviour of fans have a look at your own fans, rioting in Vigo, Amsterdam, Valencia, Blackburn, forcing a plane to EMERGENCY LAND on the way back from Vigo. Then this season a fan runs on the park and slaps Dida, your singing about the I.R.A abroad, coins and a mobile phone thrown at the Rangers doctor and players yet none of the culprits are ever caught . . .

Yes, yous truly are the greatest fans in the world eh? . . . .

All I'll say is - not 1 single arrest away in Europe this season, yous cant say the same . .

As for Cincannatus - Your post is ridiculous

#5.

The reason the match in Bolton was cancelled was because the Police couldn't muster the manpower required to deal with the size of the support - nothing to do with the 'reputation' of the support....tell the lie enough times and all that mate though eh?

Also, where exactly in Barcelona dd you witness this "mayhem" to which you refer?

I was there and what I witnessed was 20,000 bluenoses without any of the requested facilities pumping twenty odd million euros in to the local economy and all with zero arrests - hardly "mayhem". Still, tell the lie enough times.....

Finally, on your last point; I'm sure the Police in Belgrade, Lisbon, Bremen, Florence etc etc, where the Rangers fans have been praised to the hilt, would be delighted to host the final if the killjoys and beuarocrats from the GMP don't want to.

Anyway, I'm off to my bed mate to think happy thoughts about the trip to the Manchester. Enjoy wallowing in your bitterness buddy.

Little wonder the unionists are losing support. They are always carping always negative. The Rangers fans will go to Manchester whether they have tickets or not.

The suggestion of using Old Trafford for the overspill with big screen TVs is an inspired suggestion. They will be able to create an atmosphere as near to seeing the game as is possible.

For Manchester United to throw open its stadium for this would be a good gesture. I'm sure the Manchester police would support the idea. There is little fear of trouble from the Rangers fans. I believe the number of arrests for the their travelling support this season was zero.

Same with the Celtic fans who went to Seville.

Congratulations Rangers for getting to the final. Bring the trophy back to Scotland. All of Scotland are delighted in your success.

So nice of you yo take time out of your busy schedule of hurting to offer advice. Thank you ever so much. It must be really great to be you, bet your wife is a pretty lass.

The authorities within Manchaester simply must take notice, burying their heads in the sand and issuing statements warning us to stay away will fall on deaf ears. We are on our way and it's up to the city of Manchester to provide facilities to ensure all visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience.

If they don't then Manchester should be excluded from nominating itself from hosting any major sporting event in the future. I love the city but if they allow fear and perceptions to get in the way of what could be a lucrative and fun day for their citizens then sport will be the greatest loser of all.

The Rangers fans have been impeccable on every trip this season so far, no arrests whatsoever thus far is quite staggering. We shouldn't be descriminated against.

Manchester, we are coming, I hope the locals can benefit from it and join us in a celebration.

As an Aberdeen fan I am as pleased as punch that Rangers have made it to the final. It is brilliant to have a Scottish team to cheer on in Europe. Knowing lots of bluenoses from this area they are all busy booking their flights to Manchester and to hell with having tickets. They are going to party in Manchester. The killjoys of Mancherster are famous, they even threaten their own peole with arrest if they stand up at Old Trafford.

Turn the city blue, have a great time and make Scotland proud just as we were of the Celtic fans in Seville!

What the heck does this have to do with Salmond?
We cant get the extra police officers here that he promised but he sees fit to allocating the Manchester Police to doing a task that they clearly do not want to do.
Salmond is reviled by the vast majority of the Rangers support and he would be wise to keep away from the game and not deprive a real fan of a ticket.

Can you guys no just say well done Rangers for reaching a Euro final.

I would have thought Man U would have been rubbing their hands in glee at the thought of being able to charge £20/£30 a ticket for fans to watch the match on big screens at OT.

Nice little end of season earner for them and that's before you take into account the money that would be spent on food and drink at the stadium.

The City of Manchester Council, who own Eastlands and have responsibility for policing, tourism, parks, leisure etc. etc. , have the responsibility, not MU. It may have escaped your notice, but Manchester United have other matters to deal with, what with playing another ENGLISH club in MOSCOW in a wee Euroipean competition.

You know, as a catholic born Scot I am ashamed of some of the comments on this board. It is these comments and half a life time of being forced to reject anyone who wasnt catholic that made me jump ship to begin with..Thankfully I no longer believe in any god, so I am free from the mind numbing catholic indoctrination that exists in Scottish life. And when I hear Celtic fans, some of my family members included, suggesting that Rangers fans are secterian, I always almost fall of my chair. OF COURSE they are secterian, but they are no worse than the dispicable religiously driven Celtic Football Club, nor are they as bad as the IRA sympathisers that exist and have always existed. Rangers and Celtic fans are good people in general who sometimes get caught up in the moment, that is a trait common to both. But another trait similar to both is rampant religious hatred. So Celtic fans, please give it a rest and accept that this season, Rangers have absolutely dominated. And having played almost half a season football more than Celtic this season, they deserve credit for getting to the final.
Any Celtic fan who mentions "fans" in an attempt to sleight Rangers is exuding jealousy in abundance. It is pathetic and a reminder of why I needed to jump ship and rid myself of the small minded Irish immigrant attitude that seems to infiltrate the minds of so many Celtic fans. Who incidently are Scottish, but Irish to the core. Go figure!
Good luck Rangers! You wont win the league, but you could do the cup treble

Mancunians relax - this will be a meeting of kindred spirits. Not so much a football match as a political rally. They'll get along swimmingly with their quaint songs about never surrendering; guarding walls; child abuse; gloryfying famine, yadda, yadda.

I exclude decent Rangers fans from this critique - but there is a sizeable number (majority/miniority?) of "Bears" who revel in being thoroughly unreconstructed and who harbour deeply backward and offensive views.

They are the people? I humbly suggest not.

#30 deleteduser,

The Police and Town Councils in that neck of the woods have a long and proud Tradition of trying to crush rebellious Scots.

At the fag-end of my misguided sojourn as a Celtic fan, I travelled to Burnley to see the hoops in an Anglo-Scottish Cup tie.

1) No-one with a Green and White scarf was permitted to enter a Motorway Service station within 50miles of Burnley.
2) All shops and Pubs in the town were closed at lunchtime (kick off 7.30)
3) Supporters busses were stopped then escorted to enclosures some 2miles from the ground.
4) Fans were headed to away supporters cage(POW style), by baton welding Policemen.
5) Said cage had a capacity of 8k, 12k were shoehorned in, despite the fact that an entire stand was left empty.

At half time some fans scaled the fence to make their way to the unoccupied stand but were beaten back by riot police assisted by B McNeil, many of them took possession of the "no mans land" separating the home and away fans for the remainder of the game.

At full time the fans had to wait their turn to funnel through 2 or 3 small exits at the back of the extremely steep terracing.

At this point Plod decided it was their duty to reclaim no "mans land" which had no exits that did not involve climbing spikey railings or going on to the pitch, this they did in numbers and with gusto, batons and dogs.

The Tail-enders in the main body of fans had no option but to turn and fight the pumped up crazies in uniform, that had pursued their quarry onto the terracing and hope that the rest didn't come stampeding down the slope to assist(trample)them.

Oh...Happy Days!

The sectarian crap evident in a lot of the above post is just what Scotland doesn't need.

I was in Sevilla for the Cup Final and proud to be a Scot and a Celtic supporter.
I am confident that the vast bulk of Rangers supporters who travel to Manchester will feel the same.

If Greater Manchester Council respond like the Sevilla authorities and provide large screens and commonsensical policing, I am sure that it will be a great occasion.

Get a grip, you bunch of bigotted bams who post garbage in the name of supporting your team. You are a disgrace to your team, Scotland and, more importantly, yourself.

#49 - If you were better informed and had read any of my numerous posts on SoS/Scotsman you would appreciate that a "freethinker" is generally regarded as someone who eschews superstition and the irrational - fundamental tenets of faith-based religion. The books of Dawkins, Harris, Hitchens and Grayling sit comfortably on my bookshelf alongside works by Bruce, Devine, Gallagher who have well documented the history of anti-Catholic/anti-Irish bigotry in Scotland. The inglorious role of Rangers Football Club - with its decades-long sectarian signing policy (shamefully ignored by the Government & SFA) was pivotal to this. I like to think I know my history!

While I'm glad that RFC are trying to shift the club into modern times you - presumably as a Rangers fan - surely cannot ignore the fact that there are still tens of thousands of Rangers fans who hark back to the good old days when the Orange Order/Militant Unionism and naked anti-Catholicism were de rigeur for your average punter on the terraces of Ibrox. The terraces may be long gone but I fear that the old attitudes remain still in the closed-minds of the lumpen Gers cohort.

I hope that Rangers have a good day out in Manchester -and that there is no trouble. As a supporter of their rivals my goodwill cannot unfortunatly extend to wishing them victory but it would be churlish not to recognise that the Walter and Ally show has risen to the challenge of tackling Celtic's recent hegemony.

Laters - off to grill some bacon to go with my Earl Grey!

Good post,

#52 the fact is NO Scottish club supporters will ever be treated well by any provincial English city or police force.
Don't expect fan zones, don't expect friendly directions from police or a Euro style welcome from a laid back cosmopolitan city that is used to dealing with big occasions.
Expect a parochial "Weatherfield" po-faced, anti-foreigner hiss(I'm a Rangers supporter but go along with celtic #52).

You say "Welcome to the 21st Century" - I think you should better direct your greetings to the thousands of your fellows Gers fans who - having watched all of the recent European ties - seem to have their watches set 300 years in the past. Every song that they sing is sectarian - and some new, particulary offensive, ones have recently been added to the canon of hate.

If all of the Rangers songs were sectarian then we would be playing behind closed doors. You are so full of your own sectarian argument that you disregard others ie Media 1. Go and have a lie down and stop showing yourself up !

The biggest instance of sectarianism in Scotland is the RC churches and the WoS Labour Party's insistence that a person's religion is more important to teaching geography, history, needlework etc, than the teacher's experience or qualifications.
Through this mechanism the catholic church in Scotland has promoted it's own adherents, with no competition from non-catholics, and artificially lifted them in the education career ladder.
Of course you will still be fulminating about Rangers' signing policy, ended 20 or so years ago, but as a catholic "Freethinker" perhaps you could give an indication as to whether you think this ongoing despicable discrimination should end.
More non-catholic teachers are affected by catholic employment policy in one year than catholic footballers were affected by Rangers' signing policy in 40.

You are in denial if you don't think that Rangers fans still sing sectarian songs. Many don't - but many do.

I'm trying to decide if you are actually thick - or just mischevious.

Read my earlier post. I am an atheist. I have very strong views about the corrosive influence that ALL RELIGIONS have on society (the World over.)

Religion should be taken out of education - period.

As I have said Rangers are trying to drag their fans into adopting a modern, more-enlightened outlook - for which I give them credit (although the cynic in me could suggest that Murray only started this project because officialdom was, at long last, on his ass.)

I'm all for keen rivalry between fans but, in all honesty, it's quite difficult to come up with many "Rangers" songs that aren't sectarian in nature. Are you honestly telling me that the "Billy Boys" is not still sung on supporters buses and in fans' clubs etc?

Decent Rangers fans (and there are many - including some in my family) are today having to suffer the long legacy of their fellow fans disgusting behaviour and attitudes. These decent fans sat on their hands and said nothing for decades - and it will take a long time for the overall Rangers support to be regarded as "normal" football fans.

I will welcome that day but from what I hear from the stands at Ibrox the old ways are certainly not consigned to history.

#52 #57 You do not even know what Manchester will yet provide, this City has the Greatest football team in the world and are use to coping with vast amount of fans and I am sure they will cater for the Rangers fans in a superb way. So why dont you enjoy the fact that you are in a European Final and stop your moaning and whinging and enjoy the moment. I am sure the Manchester police will be laid back and as long as the fans enjoy thereselves with no trouble there will be no problems. You have got to admit there are some babies on this site.

You're all worked up about what you think goes on among people you know nothing about
>"Are you honestly telling me that the "Billy Boys" is not still sung on supporters buses and in fans' clubs etc?"<
I don't know mate, anymore than I know what your supporters are singing on their buses or in their clubs,I bet they haven't stopped singing about the ira though, but I won't lose any sleep over it.
I do know what your church is doing regards employing people, it is something that is concrete and affects thousands of Scottish teachers.
That people like you, a "freethinker" (aye......right), spit feathers and chew the carpet over things and people that you cannot know, rather than say something about this disgraceful infringement of human rights just shows that you are more interested in being an anti-Rangers and anti-Protestant than being a freethinker.
As for the "thick" remark, that's probably the only response a crypto-bigot can come out with.

Why all the fuss, howabout stopping the ticketless St Petersburg fans that are going to desend on Manchester and ok there are elements of rangers fan who ruin for the rest however ALL clubs have this problem. I dont think so as that would be racist but they can do that against the scots (and before anyone bleets Im not a rangers fan). I think the issue is that they just dont want to bother as there isnt an English team involved.

It would appear that your own prejudice cannot allow you to accept that someone who criticises sectarianism amongst your beloved fellow Rangers fans is not some brainwashed, bitter t@ig with an axe to grind.

Sorry if don't fit into your pre-conceived mould old chap.

The majority of people here in England were over the moon for Rangers. in fact the only negative was from the Scots who live here and are Celtic supporters.

Idiotic suggestion by a small-time politician.

Keep Rangers fans in Glasgow and have big screens at Ibrox to let them view it. Keep them away from Glasgow Green - another powderkeg.

The bad blood between Man U and Rangers is enough for any fool to see they will not be welcome in Manchester.

If they have a ticket then fine...but ticketless fans should stay well clear.

I agree with Scotland's first minister (Never in my books a small time politician, they come from Ireland )that Rangers fans should travel to Manchester and the city should accommodate them.

As someone who prefers the other side of the OF i can stil bring myself to support Rangers in the final but hope they don't win it. I could not stand the bragging rights.

Anyway good luck to them and hope that Manchester wakes up and welcomes the Rangers fans..

The Scottish National Party is marking the first anniversary of its election to power today, as it hits 45% in an opinion poll - its highest-ever rating and a stunning 14 points ahead of Labour.

The poll showed the SNP on 45% of the constituency vote, with Labour on 31%, Tories on 12% and LibDems on 11%.On the regional list vote, the SNP lead was almost as comfortable, at 41% and 12 points ahead of Labour, while Tories and LibDems were each on 12%. The Greens attracted 4%; Socialists and Solidarity polled only 1%.
Another poll, by YouGov published earlier this week, registered 36% support for the SNP on the Holyrood constituency vote, with Labour on 31%, LibDems on 15% and Tories on 13%. On the regional vote, YouGov's internet sample showed the SNP on 37%, Labour on 28%, LibDems and Tories on 13%. For Westminster intentions, Labour had 34%, four points ahead of the SNP, with Tories on 17% and LibDems on 14%.

The latest rating is a boost for the SNP as it marks a year since its election breakthrough.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE SNP..HAIL HAIL....

The Manchester Police might be saying only travel if you have a ticket, but the Manchester authorities know that a huge number of fans will travel the short distance to Manchester (Celtic's trip to Seville is an indicator of the kind of numbers to expect). This is inevitable and the city will need to deal with this in a positive way - Cities charged with major football events have been creating fan zones for a number of years now. With such a large number of Rangers fans traveling south then the use of Old Trafford would seem to be a very sensible solution. And Manchester's economy will get a boost, just as Glasgow's did in 2002 and 2007.

No city authority has ever been faced with the dilemma that faces Manchester.

Their worst fears are that

50-75 thousand ticketless fans will descend on them, a high proportion of whom will be drunken low-life.

At the same time they must police a high-profile soccer match which will be attended by 50,000 out of towner's, many of whom will also be drunken low-life, split into two factions who must be kept apart.

The indigenous drunken low-life are also fairly numerous and may fancy taking a crack at stragglers.

The manpower and financial resources available to the police force are finite but they cannot afford to get this wrong and they only have the one shot.

Their principle responsibilities are the wellbeing of the citizens of Manchester and their budget.

The choices are an iron fisted lockdown of the City, preventing people with Scottish accents and no ticket from entering.(mean spirited but do-able)

World cup style big screens and portaloos strategically placed in the vicinity of the stadium.(costly and high-risk)

Screens erected at old Trafford and fans charged to get in . Most fans will head first to the City stadium in the hope of getting tickets to the real deal, then will be forced to make their way through five miles of bandit country to Old Trafford, then find their way back to their transport. (Given the numbers involved - big time logistical nightmare, even without the drunken bampots.)

If they get it wrong the streets will flow with blood.

If they get it right the streets will flow with pish.

Would you like to be in their shoes?

As someone born and raised around Manchester, and who then lived nearly 20 years happily in Scotland this story (and some the comments that follow) remind me of the stupid attitudes and unthinking (and uninformed) bigotry that helped persuade me and my family to leave the UK!
Come on Manchester, get the screens up in Old Trafford and make this an occasion like any grown up city would.
If you can't organise this proverbial "p$#! up in a brewery", you should not be allowed any more major sporting events - Pathetic!
