LABOUR yesterday called on the Scottish Government to create an army of 4,000 young volunteers to work on schemes in education, health and the environment.
Labour set up such a scheme, Project Scotland, in 2005. But the SNP stopped funding it, party leader Iain Gray said.

He said the Obama administration had backed a scheme to quadruple the number of volunteers in Americorps to 250,000.

"We can do likewise by creating 4,000 new places on national voluntary schemes through Project Scotland for young people in education, health and the environment," Mr Gray said

Let me guess. 4,000 slaves and SNP/Labour voters getting paid 60k a year to co-ordinate and consult on it?

Ian Gray with another one of his Big policy announcements, well, perhaps, not quite, he is just trying to promote a policy from the previous discredited an useless Lab/Lib executive. The policy was not even particularly effective, however it sums up the present bunch of labour no hopers.
Labour are devoid of any meaningfull policies and are not interested in any as the are but a branch office of london Labour, pathetic

You can't MAKE people volunteer, Mr.Gray. No matter how much cash you spend, mid credit crunch, to persuade them.

In contrast to the cynical, hard-drinking Scots, the Americans are idealists.

However, Bill Clinton's Americorps has only been able to sell it's message to young Americans by providing a salary which is, by US, very low pay.

I am afraid the leader of the Labour Parliamentary Group at the Scottish Parliament is very much mistaken IF he actually believes that young Scots from some of the most deprived housing estates in Europe are going to rush out and sign up to such a programme?

Sadly, young people from these estates would rather consume a carry-out of cheap wine and cider, and only add to the widespread litter strewn about their environment!

Another "strategy" in the country's slow march to fascism. The creation of an instant corps of brownshirts, to indoctrinate (education) force labour (health) and observe (environment).

With the teaching profession in disarray, the Police emasculated and self indulgent, and the medical profession being paid more for doing less and less, this idea dressed up as a good thing is just another tier of 'pseudo-cops' to keep us on our knees.

Project Scotland discriminates against people who are over 25. For a while there it was near impossible for people between the ages of 26-49 to start their first voulentery post. Very enoying when you need the experence to get your dream job.

Encouraging youg people can be a good thing but they should discurage people between the ages of 26-49 from voulentering.

We need a wide range of people for diffrent age brackets, diffrent background ect. to voulenter in these sort of things. Why give more help and suport to thoes who are either under 26 or over 50.

P.S. The reason why I'm not mentioning the over 50's is because their is a schem that runs that helps people over the age of 50 to find voulentry post.

#1 The Brain: Thanks to the way the world has developed their are certain jobs that are unachivable without experences and for a large persentage of these jobs the only way the indavidaul can progress and to get the job is to do a bit of voulentering. It's a sign of the times.

#3 Steve: That is so true. If some doesnae want to be their or do something then, they are more likely to be come a nusence, if forced in to it. Also they have to have some sort of interst in the task if they have none then their just going to walk away.

Voulentering has to be something that the indvidaul turns to by their own acord. The materail and the adivce should be avaible to everyone, so it's their to help them when they feel the need, the want or the urge to volenter. So they are not mucked about as much as they currenty are.

Mr Lachie...I don't see where you get your doom and gloom about the young..give them opportunity and they will take it.
