THE Tories demanded the new Scottish Executive cut costs last night after it emerged that £9,000 is being spent every working day on government publications in Scotland.
The Scottish Executive put out 430 publications in the year to the end of May this year at a cost of £2.4 million.

Derek Brownlee, for the Scottish Conservatives, said this worked out at about £9,000 for every working day of the year.

The exp
enditure on each publication varies enormously, from £104,000 spent circulating the Executive's summary on emergency care around the country to £135 spent on a small sex-discrimination document.

But Mr Brownlee claimed much of this money was being wasted, particularly as the amount spent on publications has gone up from less than £1 million in 2001 to £2.4 million in 2006-7.

He said: "I accept that government has a duty to inform, advise and consult - but that is not a green light to waste so much taxpayers' money on glossy brochures.

"Taxpayers are fed up with governments which waste their money, engage in endless consultations and produce reports and reviews purely for the sake of it. The new minority SNP administration must learn that."

But a Scottish Executive spokes woman stressed the costs had been incurred under the previous administration.

She added: "We are committed to delivering value for money and ensuring efficient and effective use of taxpayers money.

"We will manage the production of publications efficiently to ensure savings are made where possible - without compromising the openness of government or public safety."

Is this Tory getting his retaliation in first? Tories and labour are very good at telling the SNP what to do now that they have lost power. It is a pathetic attempt to discredit the SNP before they have had much of a chance to roll their sleeves up.

I work in local government and the amount of fat, glossy, expensive publications which are produced that no-one reads is unreal. I suspect a lot of these are 'vanity' publications with the main function to stoke someone at the top's ego.

The Tories are right to highlight this issue.

I'm no really here,

It seems the Tories are blaming the SNP for Lab/LibDem spending in the last Exceutive. Still, they never did let facts get in their way.

#2 Glad to hear someone actually working with these profligates agrees with my opinion that far too much is wasted on publications. Haven't they heard of the internet? And why don't they target their print at people who need it?

Before someone points out that not everyone has internet access, those that want to read the guff the council turns out can do so by going to their local library and logging on. They're all accessible now.

AM2

You made that up. They said nothing of the sort.

The statement is quite clear.

Your twisted translation is pathetic, even by your standards.

The fear of the unionists now the Nationalists are in power and controlling the distribution of Government information is palpable.

Not a peep when they did it though.

To the victor, the spoils.

Go weep.

AM Squared. You may not be telling porkies this time, but you are certainly making up fairy tales. I know it is hard for you to accept, but the expenditure was incurred by your unionist New Labour numpties, with the assistance of the Whigs.

Why can't you just be honest and say that it was wee Joke's mob that was at fault, and that you hope the new government doesn't make the same mistakes, or indulge in the same profligacy?

Boy Wonder,

When they were in power (UK) the Tories were the worst offenders in producing 300 page glossy reports no-one wanted to read!

They can't lecture anyone. And as far as I'm concerned, the only good Tory lies a-mouldering in his grave!

That happened during the rule of the Scottish Unionist Labour Party (SULP). The Scottish Conservative Unionist Party (SCUP) is a too late in making this remark; don't they know that the SULP has lost an election more tan 3 months ago?

I hope the SNP government follows the practice of the SNP itself in this respect. Most information in the SNP is, nowadays, sent electronically or posted online.

Cheaper and more environmentally friendly.

this print bill is spent in Scotland, creating jobs for designers, printers and binders in Scotland. I could understand the issue if the money was leaking out of the country but it is supporting an important Scottish Industry. Its not money wasted, necessarily, its money circulated through the economy. It's more interesting to look at other areas of executive expenditure where the cash leaves the scottish economy!

The Tories were not in power.

The figures have just come out so he could not have mentioned it while the last lot were in.
He did suggest that this lot should learn from the mistakes of the last lot.

"The sad thing is that the English Controlled Parties"

They are British parties not English but I have noticed that about nationalists, They cannot distinguish between British and English which is the very thing they accuse the English of.

"Best if the Unionists learn to shut it."

I am sure you would love that to happen.
The unionist just to sit quiet, say nothing and allow the nationalist to do what ever they like.
In fact why not go the whole hog and say no one is allowed to speak out against the SNP or their policies or even criticise the great leader A Salmond.
There are plenty examples around the world today or in recent history that the nationalist in Scotland could follow with such types.

This is more of a case of the Tories attacking both the SNP and Labour. They can castigate Labour for the spending and the SNP if they don't tackle it.

The irony is that they were the pioneers in the art of having party political propoganda masked as "government information".

Brian Hill,

"..from £104,000 spent circulating the Executive's summary on emergency care around the country.."

Surely these could be sent by email as attachments and/or posted on the net for all to see?

No doubt some publications would have to take the form of brochures but purely information booklets within national and local Government circles can go via the net.

Well done to Derek! This is just the sort of issue which the Tories can usefully highlight. We have to show people that we are the enemy of red tape and waste, while continuing to highlight our now long established green credentials. I think that this kind of issue has largely succeeded in putting to rest our old image as the “nasty party”. In the modern age, there is absolutely no need for vast wads of paper communication and I’m sorry to hear that the tradition is continuing in Scotland, even now that we have finally escaped the Labour yoke (as far as the parliament is concerned, anyway). You would think the problem would be decreasing, but this just hasn’t happened, mainly because of the ever growing expansion of junk mail. To have government contributing to the problem is just ridiculous.

Another non story from Hamish.
What is the point in publicising something which happened under the previous administration.
Was this done so that am2 and all the rest of his cronies would somehow blame the S.N.P.

As a group we have maybe spent more time than most contacting MSP's from ALL parties regarding serious issues within Scottish law.

We can say with certainty NOT ONE of the major parties or minor parties took any interest in the appalling abuses going on in Scotlands courts initially .

John Swinney SNP made some attempts to expose the massive problem but only because he had been prompted by one of our members and his tenacity didn't allow Swinney to detract from the issues.
He more than Swinney should take the credit for those exposures some of which can be viewed at

ALSO MSP JOHN SWINNEY COMMENTS ON DOUGLAS MILL CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF LAW SOCIETY OF SCOTLAND AT
http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=1757988010...

We do not want to disappoint anyone regarding the new Executive but we already KNOW the histories of some of their key players that are part of and support the outrageous abuses ,victims like ourselves have faced through many years of litigation abuse,to the great detriment of our health and finances in many cases facing homelessness due to outright criminal collusion.

The major parties can publish all the propaganda they like in glossy magazines but our group will ensure the people of Scotland know precisely what is going on in the background and at least some of the changes in the Legal Profession and Legal Aid bill were voted by the SNP and Greens in favour of greater transparency and accountability while
Labour ,Liberals and Tories voted in favour of keeping far more powers in the hands of Scotlands legal parasites and show a complete lack of concern for the tho

So the PREVIOUS administration WASTED the OUR money on glossy mags and other leaflets.
I'm glad I got that sorted out.
Nice of some Tory to let us know!!!
I'm sure the SNP were terribly grateful to him for making that public knowledge.
I'm sure the SNP will 'take that on board' and will not indulge in stationery profligacy!!!
