A NEW advert by a Hollywood director is aiming to lure English cinema-goers north of the Border.
The advert by Peter Webber, the man behind Girl With a Pearl Earring, features a couple on a romantic getaway to the Western Isles.

It hit screens in more than 100 cinemas in London, southern England and the Midlands today, as part of a £2.7 million campaign to attract tourists to Scotland.

Webber, who also directed last year's Hannibal Rising and an episode of the cult US drama Six Feet Under, said he enjoyed filming on Barra.

He said: "I spent all of my childhood summers on the Isle of Lewis in my grandmother's croft.

"My mother's family come from North Tolsta and many of my relatives still live there, so it was a delight to film in the region."

VisitScotland said it hopes the 90-second advert will help to boost annual tourism revenues from £4 billion to £6 billion by 2015.

I thought "Girl with a Pearl Earring" was a Work of Art,of which the Artists Name, for the moment, escapes me.

I've seen this film and as a professional filmmaker, I can tell you, you don't need to use a "Hollywood director" to make Scotland's scenery look good - you almost only have to roll the camera and it does it itself. So why didn't this publicly-funded body use a local videographer who's chosen to stay in Scotland? I - and any of my colleagues - would have done it equally professionally for a fraction of the cost. VS bosses looking for an invite to Webber's next red carpet ding dong maybe? Incidentally, 'Girl with a pearl earing' looked nice, but was oh so tedious!

I haven't seen the ad - doubt if I ever will - but I can imagine it. A man, a woman, soft focus, evening sunlight, magnificent scenery, suggestion of sexual tension, voiceover.

So, the I-don't-know-how-many romantics who frequent the picture houses in England think, "Oh luuuuuvly! I think I'll forego the two weeks in the timeshare in Torremolinos this year and visit beeyooteefool Scotland instead."

Cut to summertime (reality summertime, that is): A man, a woman, soft rain that's been falling for two weeks, evening attack of clouds of vampire midges, can't see the scenery if you're more than a furlong from it, suggestion of tuberculosis in the couple's coughs, voice gone.

For those who haven't seen it, try: www.visitscotland.com/perfectday

Not too many midges or voiceovers to be had but the scenery is indeed magnificent.
