THE UK's biggest wood-fired power station was yesterday formally opened by the First Minister, who hailed it as a green energy milestone.
The Steven's Croft "biomass" power station at Lockerbie will produce enough power to supply up to 70,000 homes, more than 17 times the population of the Dumfriesshire town. The 44-megawatt station burns forestry leftovers and specially grown willow, helping jobs and saving up to 140,000 tonnes a year of greenhouse gases.

Alex Salmond said the station marked a further step towards Scottish Government targets of 50 per cent of electricity from renewables, and an 80 per cent cut in carbon emissions by 2050.

"At a stroke, Steven's Croft more than doubles Scotland's biomass electricity generating capacity from 39MW to 83MW," said the First Minister.

This site is creating 50 jobs at Steven's Croft and is supporting 250 more.

When are you going to get on to processing and using rubbish as a fuel Alex?
The Reculture system - http://www.reculture.se/affarside.asp

Think of the millions saved in landfill tax... and the lack of enormous and unhealthy land fill sites and resources as a byproduct.

Maybe I'm stupid, but I thought that burning ANYTHING increases C02 emissions-no?

Yes, burning things which have a carbon basis like wood will produce CO2. But the theory goes that wood like willow can be coppiced - trimmed in such a way that re-growth keeps pace with use, and so the CO2 absorbed by the willow in the process cancels out what you burn. Well that's the theory anyway.

I agree with Ard Righ's comment about burning rubbish - it's just "wasted" (haha) at the moment.

This type of positive thinking is what we need instead of the unthinking Green nonsense about GW.

If Salmond says its green I'd check the figures again...
Maybe if it recieves a cash injection form Westminster the carbon figures will balance

Seriously.... biomass is a great idea BUT because of transport costs it can only balance the green books if it is local.
BUT it should be welcomed it should also be remembered that this scheme was financed and OKed by the previous gov.....
