SCOTLAND and Rangers captain Barry Ferguson will be out of action for between three and four months because of an ankle injury.
Ferguson has been hampered by ankle problems for much of the past three years and the situation flared during Rangers' hectic finale to last season. He visited a specialist in March and was given treatment that allowed him to play through the pain
barrier and help Rangers' bid for a quadruple. Ferguson was also told that he needed rest rather than an operation during the summer.

But the club revealed that a problem was discovered in the early part of this week and confirmed the 30-year-old will remain in Glasgow for treatment while his team-mates travel to the Netherlands tomorrow to continue pre-season training.

"It's a massive blow," said Ibrox assistant manager Ally McCoist. "We know it's vital that we make a good start to the season, and losing Barry is a problem."

As well as missing his club's Champions League qualifying ties and the start of the SPL campaign, Ferguson will sit out Scotland's World Cup double header against Macedonia and Iceland in September and is a doubt for the visit of Norway on 11 October.

National manager George Burley said: "Barry has been a very important player for Scotland for a number of years and to lose our captain at the start of the campaign is a huge blow to everybody. We'll be keeping in touch with Rangers and Barry and our hope is that he gets back playing as soon as possible."

A couple of the English papers have been running this week with a story that Everton are set to offer £4 million to MU for Darren Fletcher.

With Bazza out for some time, if I was WS, I'd be on the 'phone to Sir Alex trying to do business. After all he can offer (probably) CL football.

If WS is thinking of offering £4 million for Davis and he can get Fletch for the same price, I'd go for Fletch.

No danger. Rags cannot afford Davis's wage demands, let alone Fletcher's.

As good as Ferguson has been at times for Rangers, i struggle to think of any big games that he was outstanding in when playing for Scotland. Can you give me more than 3 examples?

1 game from 45 or so caps...... Possibly give him the second Italy game. Hasn't done it on a regular enough basis to be considered a loss though.

will be interesting to see if the likes of brown & fletch can step-up and do a better job....

# 12 - IMO the game against Norway was a prime example of how overrated Ferguson is. I thought he was the weak link in the Scotland side and that hartley and Fletcher carried the midfield that game. But somehow Captain Baz got awarded man of the match for what I saw as little more as passing the ball back to the defence every time he got it.

I do however think he is worthy of being a Scotland regular, because as much as we have improved as a national side over the past couple of years we still cannot afford to overlook players of the undoubted ability of Ferguson. But I honestly think at international level he would benefit from not having the captaincy, as I think he feels too much pressure to sit and just hold his position in midfield and be a leader - as opposed to the more attacking and influential role he seems to play for Rangers. I know he captains his club as well but I think for Ferguson that is a completely different kettle of fish.

Anyway I'm waffling now, basically I do rate the guy and I think he is worthy of a place in the national side - he is just a bit overrated in my opinion and doesn't influence the Scotland matches nearly as much as he does at club level (although I accept playing week in week out against most of the SPL in a side such as Rangers gives slightly more freedom than playing against higher opposition for Scotland).

I don't want Ferguson to play for Scotland ever again. I would be sad if that comes about only because he's had a serious injury.
15

heart of scot,

ferguson's injury is not very important for scotland, they can make do without him but for rangers it's the worst thing wich could happen.
16

Plonker,

11/07/2008 09:14:01
Not a bad player and Rangers will miss him.

However, like his (establishment) club team mates, he hardly ever bothered turning up to play for Scotland so I don't see that it's a big blow to Burley

Aye.You're right.
18

Who?,

11/07/2008 09:49:06
Rangers will miss Ferguson in a domestic context- referees refuse to book him, he scores goals by controlling the ball with his hand and has the red top laptop loyal in his pocket.

However in a european context ferguson has been out of his depth for the last two seasons. He has never really had the pace or ability to mix it with the best, however age and injuries have more than cought up. Steven Davis was the man who controlled rangers midfield and drove then to the uefa cup final. In most of the games he was the standout while ferguson lurked in the shaddows.

He has been posted missing in international football throughout his career. Ok he scored against italy in november but he was offside. His career has be marked by continually withdrawing from international squads, when he turned up he was really poor.

He will not be missed.

Even if he's no so strong than befor, it's above all his presence on the ground wich will miss mentally to the other players.

Sorry but Ferguson has "performed in about 10/15% of his 45 games for Scotland.
He and Paul McStay are in the same situation - grossly overrated at international level
At domestic level yes both good players

BF is now 30/31 time to move on !!!!

There's just one way to know if he will miss.

Rangers fan and I agree that BF shouldnt play for Scotland again. Not because of any of the BF/Rangers haters urine being spouted, but purely and simply that the level of hate and invective towards him just isnt worth it.
He gets absolutely slaughtered when playing for Scotland.
He gets booed at every ground as soon as he touches the ball. (he hasnt even had a chance to annoy the trogs) It really sticks in the craw of nearly everyone that a captain of Scotland is also captain of Rangers.
He get zero positive press or thanks from a parochial ungrateful wee backwater despite playing through
injury on occasion.
Fire away with every single call-off incident you can think of. Whatever it is I agree! Get BF finished with Scotland!

Please Mr Burley, do me and all other Rangers fans a favour and tell BF he is finished at International level.
It'll ingratiate you with so many people you wouldnt believe ;-)
We'll have him fit more often which suits me.
PS. Note that Ive managed to avoid any references to religion or bigotry when defending my club's captain!

# 25 I agree he gets far too much stick, he doesn't deserve that but you have to admit he doesn't seem to perform often enough for Scotland to the level you would expect from a player of his calibre. I don't think I was too scathing of Ferguson, and I do think he has a place in the national side. I just think he needs to be more consistent and possible the captains armband is detrimental to him for Scotland, and he may benefit from not having the responsibility and being allowed to concentrate more on influencing the game though his play we know he is capable of.
26

Stanley,

11/07/2008 12:50:01
#28 Laurie, the balanced stuff I can take easily and I've got to say your first post was fair.Performances not potential dictate that Scotland should expect better. The alternatives (regardless of who they play for) are not better despite the wishful thinking of BF haters.

Estate agents lie again,

Sums up Rangers squad. One player out and it's panic stations. What if they don't get Davis? Who in the current squad will replace Ferguson?
And it's not a blow for Scotland. Ferguson strangles the rest of the team of movement. Well, when he decides to turn out for his country anyway.

PS - When's Rangers eejit chairman going to update us all on his £700m redevelopment? He boldly declared in March that this one is for real and that the cynics will eat their words when he hoped to announce it in May. Surely he wouldn't lie or twist facts to the supporters and media?
28

LaurieD,

Angus 11/07/2008 13:28:34
You are right, we have a limited amount of players with the ability that BF certainly has. I think the thing that probably gets to most people is the fact Ferguson peforms so well and so consistently for Rangers and then can often seem like a different player when he is in the dark blue of Scotland. Possibly the stick he gets actually does hinder his performances, and I genuinley believe the added responsibility of being captain maybe isn't the best for him. I'd like to possibly see the armband handed to someone else and Ferguson given more licence to push forward. I prefer seeing him in a more attacking role as in the 4-5-1 for Scotland he has had a tendency just to sit in the middle and keep things simple and not go forward too much, and I think it's a shame as it is one of his strenghs.
29

Estate agents lie again,

11/07/2008 13:42:53
31 - I think the difference is simply playing against SPL midfields and defences and then international standard midfields and defences. Ferguson's the type of player who would probably stand out on a Sunday park game but hasn't the guile, technique, speed or mentality to impress outside the SPL. He left the Premiership because he knew he wasn't going to be the main man. And Rangers have made the mistake of letting him be their main man. He should be wanting to play out of his skin EVERY week to ensure he keeps his place. But they even let him see off managers. Fair enough if your nickname is Zizou. However, I'd say the best I've seen him play was against Ukraine at Hampden but then the whole team was superb. But time to end his Scotland career. He's stifling more creative technically superior players - like Barry Robson, Scott Brown, Fletcher and a couple of others. He always seems to want to be in charge or goes off in a huff. Watch him play for Rangers - has to take every free kick, corner, shy, penatlty...
30

LaurieD,

11/07/2008 13:57:41
# 32 I do agree that he does look better against average SPL opposition because yes they are inferior opponents compared to a lot he will face at international level. But I think he still has more to offer if wasn't the captain and "main man" as you put it - and maybe it's partly due to managers at inernational level giving him this mantle - because I feel the likes of Paul Hartley has shown he can play each week against SPL opposition and then also put in solid displays against the more talented international players.
31

we the people,

11/07/2008 14:59:24
i think barry'll be a big loss for those first few qualifying games. agree he's sometimes less influential for scotland than rangers, but he's the best close passer and calmest head (usually) in the team. he just stitches it all together. best scotland midfielder since john collins i'd say.

Scotland's midfield withoot Bazza? No problem!

Hartley, Scott Broon, Barry Robson, Darren Fletcher, Gary Caldwell, Thomson....many good options.

Might even be better without him.
