EDINBURGH Airport was the busiest in Scotland last month, with thousands of passengers seeking early season sunshine.
New figures from BAA Scotland today show that the Capital's gateway handled 720,012 passengers in March, with traffic boosted by strong international growth.

More than quarter of a million passengers travelled to or from international destinations – a 16 per cent rise on the same period last year.

Many headed to holiday destinations such as Alicante, Faro and Palma.

City break destinations such as Amsterdam, Paris, Dublin, Frankfurt and Madrid also proved popular – particularly over the Easter break.

In the 12 months to March, the airport attracted 9.1 million passengers – an increase of 4.2 per cent.

Airport managing director David Johnston said: "The first of 27 new services to start this year from Edinburgh took off last month, giving passengers extra frequency and choice."

He added: "BAA is investing a record £42 million in Edinburgh Airport this year in order to meet the demands of a growing route network and increasing passenger numbers."

#2 Why exactly?

There does appear to be a slowing of growth at Edinburgh though. I note that the % increase on last month was only 1% which is the lowest yet.

The comparison BAA used is not last month (February) but March 2007.
Of the 7 BAA airports in the UK, 4 showed a month on month decline:
Heathrow minus 0.6%
Stansted minus 0.3%
Aberdeen minus 5.8%
Glasgow minus 4.66%
Under those circumstances, I view month on month growth at Edinburgh International Airport as encouraging especially as the feature a 16% increase in international passengers. This wouldmost likely have been at the expense of domestic numbers.

Indeeed they do. The longer term trend is more indicative that the shorter. In Scotland, Edinburgh International Airport grew by just under 456000 passengers whilst Aberdeen saw an increase of just under 155000. Glasgow Airport contracted by just over 202000. Edinburgh International Airport therefore seems to be doing just fine and has very many new routes in the offing.

When you say "yet, joe, and then go on one of your whinges about the SNP, are you suggesting it's their fault that it's not been built thus far?
After all, they've had nearly a year - far longer than the Labour/Lib Dems alliance up here, or indeed Labour or the Tories before them.
Dolt.

Apart from anything else, perhaps the SNP would have had more cash to fast-track the project, if every other party hadn't forced through a spurious tram line that most of us didn't want!

Airport always was very quiet with not many peoples in the winter. But now changed with many peoples in winter making long waits for checking the baggage and walking past the security policeman to look in bags. Now too busy not giving time for eating or shoppings before flight. Chief Manager needs to make much bigger at terminals for making easier for passengers.

#7..The SNP has destroyed EARL, work would be underway if they had not interfered. As for Trams the SNP could have opted for EARL instead.
