ENVIRONMENTAL campaigners will target Edinburgh Airport on Saturday to highlight the growing problem of carbon dioxide emissions from the aviation industry.
The Edinburgh branches of the World Development Movement and Friends of the Earth are holding the protest as part of a bid to get the Government to include international aviation emissions in a new Climate Change Bill going through Westminister.

Gillian Wilson of Friends of the Earth Edinburgh, said: "It's crazy for Gordon Brown to leave out climate changing emissions from planes and ships from the new Climate Change Bill – but that's what he is doing.

"Why should our local industry and businesses be held to account for their carbon emissions but not the aviation industry?

"It is like banning drink-driving but making vodka drinkers exempt." The airline industry is widely considered to be one of the fastest growing sources of greenhouse gases over the coming years.

The protest has won the support of Edinburgh West MP John Barrett, who said: "Given the projected rise in aviation emissions and the lack of awareness about the huge carbon impact of shipping, any Bill which does not take these two contributors into account will be compromised from the very start."

UK aviation and the impact of shipping from and to the UK is miniscule compared with the CO emissions by Indai, China, USA and Russia, but we dont see these so called climate groups protesting there do we!
As for John Barrett, jumping on the bandwagon comes to mind
Its about time these groups such as World Development Movement and Friends of the Earth grew up!
Im fed up of being told one day, we have global warming (difficult to appreciate when its freezing and snow falling), but when its not a warm day,its then 'climate change'
The media rea just as bad, focusing on the ice melting in the antartic, during the southern hemispheres summer
then the north pole ice melting during the northern hemisphere summer, clever that!
If there so concerned about our environment, why dont they get involved in getting more recycling of materials. this is more relevant after all this is an island with landfill sites running out. But that would mean getting there hands dirty and would be too much work. easier to protest at airports.
The world needs air and sea transport to enable commerce, such as exports and imports and tourism, the bread and butter of countries trying to earn money. Something that thes groups tend to avoid discussing

I now fly and drive far more frequently just to annoy the Greenista Warriors whose forebears were telling me in the 70s that we we should protect ourselves against coming ice age and that oil reserves would be depleted to zero within 30 years.
I think I might purchase a BMW 4x4 to annoy them further.

These campaigners would be better employed having a sit downs on the M8. Aviation emissions are a drop in the ocean compared to road traffic.
