TWO people died after a car plunged down an embankment today.
Part of the northbound carriageway of the main route between England and Scotland was closed for about five hours following the accident, which happened at about 11.40am.

A black Peugeot 308 left the road on the A74 Carlisle to Glasgow road north of junction 15 at Beattock in Dumfries and Galloway.

There were no other vehicles involved.

Police could not yet confirm whether the victims were male or female.
Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary appealed for any witnesses to contact them.
