PROPERTY tycoon Donald Trump is to convert a historic house on the Balmenie estate into his family home in Scotland.
Menie House, which sits at the heart of the 200-acre area in Aberdeenshire, was bought by Mr Trump in 2006, as part of his controversial plans to build a £1 billion golf resort in the North-east.

The move was announced in a statement released b
y Mr Trump's company last night. "Menie House, which will become the Trump family residence in Scotland, is being decorated and refurbished to the highest possible standard, whilst retaining a strong traditional Scottish style, reflective of the age of the property.

"Mr Trump is working closely with the design team, ensuring that the property reflects the level of excellence demonstrated throughout his real-estate portfolio.

"Menie Park Lodge, which currently houses the site offices for Trump International Golf Links Scotland, is also being upgraded and will eventually be used to house executive suites for the development."

Menie House belonged to the Forbes family and dates back to the 18th century. It was built on the site of an ancient castle and the cellar is reputed to be haunted by a Green Lady ghost.

The team of companies that will carry out the work on the wider Menie development was also revealed yesterday.

Once completed, the resort will include two championship golf courses, a five-star, 450- bedroom hotel with associated facilities, a state-of-the-art golf academy, 950 holiday homes, 500 private family residences and 36 luxury golf villas.

The announcements follow strenuous denials yesterday by the businessman's company that they were scaling back the development in the face of the economic downturn and a series of legal and financial dismissals.

George Sorial, the manager of the Menie project, reiterated Mr Trump's commitment, stating that any rumours of cutbacks were "just not true".

Mr Trump said of the latest announcements: "It is extremely exciting that the project has become a reality.

"We are working through the planning process and as soon as we receive our detailed planning approval, the golf course construction can begin."

The development has been dogged by controversy following claims that it will damage environmentally valuable dunes.

Though initially rejected by Aberdeenshire Council's planning committee, it was "called-in" by the Scottish Government, which gave it the go-ahead.

His Atlantic City casinos aren't paying the mortgage, but his company is full steam ahead in Scotland.

Go figure.

A lot of small developers are buying there own houses or selling them to relatives at the moment. Nice to see Mr Trump is not immune to the credit crunch.

Is it not good to see these abandoned historical properties being resumed? The anti American and anti Scottish prejudices should not be allowed to hold sway when something creative is happening. Our heritage industries are useless and biased against Scotland's interests when compared to England's heritage industries and even Ireland's, who would jump at the chance of Trump's initiative.

I presume that the roof of the house will be rebuilt, so that it only touches the building one side, and then sweeps precariously across the top.

After having faith in Scotland, you deserve it.

I suspect this is a lod of PR puff, aimed at deceiving folk into thinking all is fine.

And

You must be joking!

Also - isn't this the same Trump who was not prepared to compomise - it was his way or no way?

I wonder if he has actually seen the planning conditions laid down by the inquiry? When he does, maybe he will stick to his word and go away.

Buttress,

Still flogging your dead horse objections,I see.

Bigger organisations than Trump are currently in difficulties, but it will not last forever and while the dollar remains strong against sterling and that trend is likely to continue if another bank rate cut is made, then investing in Scotland still remains a viable proposition. Beggars can't be choosers in any case.
13

Buttress,

It's not built yet, and it's been scaled back considerably from the original application.

Wonder if he knows that?

Whatever, it will still look bluddy awful, Trumptown Disney fakery 'Scottish' architecture.

Hopefully he will invest more in Scotland. Scotland needs it.

These labour lackeys would not be crowing so much if they could get their hands on some of his cash injected into any business they wished to start.

Americans bounce in and out of bankruptcy all the time. American capitalism is predicated on the practice.

Don't you have another "dog bites man" article you could highlight?

Buttery is all upset because his Labour heros completley blew the project when it was origionally muted.

They even flew Mr Trump around the site. They seemed to have lost intrest when it became clear that no
"Brown envelopes" were on offer.

Unable to do business any other way they dropped the project and proceeded to try every filthy trick in the book to get it scrapped.

Thank goodness that the SNP at least put Scotland's needs before their own.

Give this man the building contract for the Commenwealth Games now. He deserves it.

Blue Tooner,

I'm already on the streets with a blanket and a tin cuppy.

Of course the Yanks are in a deep hole but our prospects are even dimmer. The American Empire is probably finished but under Obama no doubt they will stage some sort of recovery long before we do, with Robber Barons like Trump making hay.

#20 "Give this man the building contract for the Commenwealth Games now. He deserves it."

Why not give the work to Scottish architects and builders? Surely somebody in this country could manage the project? Let's restore some faith in what WE can do, and keep a few quid here in Scotland. We can't afford another Holyrood farce!
23

Buttress,

20 - this is flogging off Scotland to a charlaton, and a cr*p development, and it deserves better.

30/12/08 - Times newspaper - Trump renages on deal to build the 500 residentual houses pushing them back for at least 3 years.

Well it looks like the council was right to throw this application in the bin in the first place. Trump will now royaly screw us all to line his own pockets.
