Time to face the litter truth, Leith

LEITH will never fulfil its ambition to become a leading tourist destination as long as its streets are filthy, it was claimed today.
A new survey found the Leith and Leith Walk wards were the dirtiest in Edinburgh, prompting calls to address the situation once and for all. Councillors and community leaders have urged the council and residents to do something about the litter probl
em.

Leith Walk, Easter Road and Great Junction Street are among the city's worst for discarded fast-food wrappers, bottles and cans, cigarette butts and dog fouling.

In the latest survey by Keep Scotland Beautiful, which monitored the level of litter in December, Leith scored 62 out of 100, the worst in the Capital and six per cent below the Edinburgh average.

Neighbouring Leith Walk ward scored only one more, trailing behind top scorers Almond and Corstorphine, which both scored 75. The study also found that dog muck can be found in a quarter of streets in the Leith Walk ward.

The survey suggested the cleanliness of streets in Edinburgh was improving, although it identified problems in every area with schools around the lunch hour.

Both Leith and Leith Walk were also cleaner than the last survey in September – which rated them as 48 and 52 respectively.

But Leith councillor Gordon Munro said the litter situation in the port was still "disgraceful". He said: "It is disappointing to see Leith at the bottom of the league. Citizens as well as council workers have a responsibility to keep Leith beautiful. If you can't reuse or recycle, then bin it for Leith's sake. These findings indicate a long-term problem which needs a long-term solution, not just additional dog wardens as proposed.

"If we want tourists to come to the area then we can no longer have independent organisations finding our streets the dirtiest in Edinburgh."

A report by Keep Scotland Beautiful to this week's transport infrastructure and environment committee said: "More needs to be done to bring the street cleaning up to the excellent standard that Edinburgh's residents expect."

And Graham Chapman, chairman of Leith Harbour and Newhaven Community Council, said it wasn't just the streets that were suffering. He said: "It is a terrible problem. The Water of Leith down at the Shore is so filthy it's embarrassing. It's all very well regenerating an area, but it's got to be kept clean."

I'm not surprised, but it is only half the story. When I lived in Leith we were constantly plagued by residents dumping their rubbish in the back yard. Some couldn't even be bothered to come down the stairs, they just threw it out of the window. That's not to mention the man who used to throw his cider bottles (refilled with something that was not cider) into the drying green because he was too lazy to get up for a pee.

I am glad not to live in Leith any more. Trying to keep the stair and back yard clear was an uphill battle.

Adam, how come almost every Leith story in the EEN has a comment from only Gordon Munro? Do the other two councillors refuse to comment or do you not bother to ask them?

How times have changed! Born and brought up in Leith I remember clearly that nobody got away with not washing the stair on the right day and the back green was for hanging out the washing. Kids were discouraged from playing in them and anybody chucking rubbish out of a window into the backgreen would have been in big trouble with the women in the stair.
However, dog mess was a big problem as too many dog owners in tenements shoved their animals out into the street in the morning and simply left them to run wild.
OK, I know that kids can't play in the streets nowadays because of all the cars but it seems that much of Leith has gone from being the bastion of the working classes to the refuge of the under class.

I have been writing to the Council regularly about the fly tippers in the Easter Road Area especially Bothwell Street. There have been rats running about due to the rubbish - but still it piles up. Remind me what is it that Environmental Wardens do again?

Leith is a dump, pure and simple.

Always has been, always will.

Why do you think the San Giro stadium is there.

I've lived in Leith for 4 years and never had a problem. Used to get more hassle from neds in Corstorphine. How many other areas of Edinburgh have 3 Michelin star restaurants?

Having said that I've never seen so many methadone users than in the Boots at Kirkgate. I'm thinking about becoming an addict as they seem to get served straight away!!

The Council have given up sweeping the streets and only collect dumped rubbish when someone complains. This means that they spend no money on staff but maintain a 100% record in responding to complaints. Its a Council performance indicator scam.

I recently visited the foot of Leith Walk, when I got off the bus, the first sight that confronted me was two policemen trying to calm down a couple who had had a bit too much to drink, the woman was intent on causing facial damage to her drinking partner. The odd-looking Jakeys passing by took no notice of this spectacle, obviously an every day event to them. I was under no illusion that these people were not to be made eye contact with, so I went about my business, head down, until I reached my destination. The streets were in a disgusting state, I shudder to think what it must be like down here on a Friday night when it gets dark, Tourist destination? you're having a laugh.

Some of these remarks are unfortunately very true. #21 I know exactly what your saying but unfortunately this isn't just something that is isolated in Leith. Try walking through the cover walkway in Pennywell shops. First time I did that I actually felt like I was taking my life in my hands. Druggies and Drunks gathering in front of shops, dogs running a muck and messing everywhere. Gutteral language coming from children and youths kicking balls at the shops and people in walkway. Two drug advice shops there... don't appear to be working. Filthy, scary place and I when you hear what comes out of the mouths of these people all you can do is shudder with disgust...and remorse that this exists in our country. It actually makes Leith look good.

Alot of my family were brought up in Leith and to be honest parts of it were rough then but I think its worse now. There are alot of good people in the area though but perhaps its time for FORT House to be bulldozed.
I think the drug addict problem stems from there.
When I was in my teens I visted family who lived in the Fort and even then I found it a scary place.Im not decrying people who live there(they have got to live somewhere)but from what I hear they are putting alot of drug addicts there now and its all going downhill.
