ENVIRONMENTALISTS were celebrating last night after John Swinney announced that Scotland would lead the way in tackling greenhouse gas emissions.
He told the SNP conference the Scottish Climate Change Bill would be tougher than expected.

The bill would cover all greenhouse gases, he said, not just carbon dioxide, and emissions from aviation and shipping would be included in the targets.

Environmental campaigners said that if the finance secretary's plans were reflected in the bill, it would make Scotland the first country to take action against the emissions from planes and ships in this way and a world leader on climate change.

Green MSP Patrick Harvie said: "These are important steps and I look forward to seeing the Climate Change Bill introduced with these improvements."

Boogie man hammers stake through heart of the economy. Mass hysteria and national blindness all too real, court told. Sentencing deferred for 30 years to allow trend to develop.

What a load of garbage. We can hardly afford to start penalising aviation, shipping or anything else at the moment, given the state of the economy. The more so given that Scotland's contribution to greenhouse gases and CO2 is miniscule.

Talking of greenhouse gases, what does Swinney intend to do about all the cows, sheep and vegetarians? Supply them with corks?

The exec needs to lick very hard to secure those crucial Green Party votes.

Fuel tax levies on transport are passed on to the consumer, contributing to yet more inflation.

The electorate will take note of this stupid hair-shirt attitude of the Nationalists. They would preside over a nation that still has pockets of deprivation on a par with many third world countries, yet they would actively strive to cut economic growth and deliver hardship. Not because it would make any difference to the climate - even an half-wit could see that 100% cut in emissions would make not one blind bit of difference. This is 100% politics, setting an example to the rest of the world by demonstrating what happens when green politics based on junk science prevail in a modern society. Scotland's old name of "Albania" might be a highly appropriate name for us in 2050.

Anyone reading the environmentalists are applauding anything should also realise that we're in for more hampering of the economy and higher levels tax to pay for this unproven dross so enthusiastically supported by Ed Milliband. WWF and RSPB will be swinging from the rafters, but they're on an agenda for more funds with no responsibility for what happens as a result.

And - great timing! World plunging into a recession, banks nationalised, more redundancies round the corner and there are certain sections of the community only too happy to help this process along on some pretext or other, but - spot the agenda. Time the SNP grew up in this respect and stopped copying the Marxist government in London.

#6, If you applaud Swinney's ecomic suicide plan then you're a greenie bam of limited intellect.

Imagine politicians deciding in 1918 what the economic policy would be for the country in 1960. Given that none of the present politicians who are making these ludicrous pledges will be alive by 2050, how can this pi*sh be legally binding? Instead of talking blandly about cuts of 60-80%, the Nationalists should be held to account to explain exactly what this translates into living standards for ordinary Scots. So called 'carbon rationing' would result in severe restrictions on travel, power usage, businesses and industry having to relocate elsewhere, food choices and limited imports. No investment in oil, airports or roads. If these are not the consequences, Swinney should spell out what they are?

eyeswider, still betting that this year's CET will average "2 degrees Centigrade colder" than last year?

Last I looked the difference was running at about 0.2 degrees.

Mind you, being out by a factor of 10 would be positively accurate by your standards.

AM I DREAMING?
This is the first time I have ever ever seen a heading in this paper which is, in anyway, supportive to anything the SNP has ever done. Flabbergasted!
