THE councillor who proposed a scheme to link parking charges to car pollution has welcomed the public support for the scheme.
Green councillor Steve Burgess was delighted to see his scheme, which sets residential vehicle permit fees according to the amount of carbon dioxide produced, receive support from the public following a consultation.

Local residents responded by more than three to one in favour of the initiative designed to encourage the use of more climate friendly vehicles and discourage gas guzzlers. Under the scheme permit costs for the largest vehicles will double to £320. Costs for the most efficient cars will drop to as little as £15.

The proposal, first put forward last July, was initially rejected by council leaders, but is now expected to get the go-ahead next week.

Councillor Burgess, the Greens' environment spokesperson, said: "Edinburgh Council now has a chance to introduce a groundbreaking green initiative, the first of its kind in Scotland, that will reduce carbon emissions from vehicles.

"If we seize these sorts of opportunities we can gradually achieve the cuts needed to tackle climate chaos."

Parked cars cause no pollution.

I live in N1 parking zone and drive a Mondeo with a 1.8L something like 3500 miles a year. Most of this driving is done at times, and to locations, I cannot reasonably get public transport, especially as I need to carry equipment with me.

The current system works, is easy to understand, and requires no major administration change (if you exclude the total incompetence at re-issuing passes.)

Green, my butt. Nearly as obnoxious as the EU rule makers.

All they are doing is creating a financial incentive TO drive.

How can a vocal minority affect so much change?
Looks like the poor 4x4 drivers are going to get hit hard again.

Ever thought it might encourage people buying new/second hand cars to buy something a little smaller to get cheaper rates. And if that works, it is presumably worth it?

# Ever thought that is a personal choice which car people prefer to drive? If these people are so concerned about the pollution then why don't they lobby to stop their manufacture, charging more to park them doesn't reduce the pollution?
Another council scam.

#6 Ever thought that seeing as the people already possess the car it isn't very green to then dispose of it just to save money? Afterall if the car is already produced why waste resources in making another one.
This is an idiotic tax with no justification whatsoever. If people want/need to own a larger car then they already pay more for their VED.
More enviromental propoganda with no justification.

Are you seriously suggesting that people will drive their cars around Edinburgh night and day, never stopping, to avoid paying parking charges?

What public consultation is being referred to? No one has asked me or any of my neighbours who are forced to pay for the privilege of parking their vehicles on their own property which happens to form part of the street. This is yet another excuse for a council tax rise sheltering under the guise of assisting to prevent climate change. It will do nothing of the sort and the little Green man and his friends on the Council know it.

#8 I never suggested anyone dispose of their car, did I?

#10 a consultation leaflet was put through doors in the centre in November, with a deadline of Dec 15th, for you to respond to.
