BRITAIN'S largest supermarket chain yesterday signalled a new focus on transport sites by announcing its first airport store would open this autumn at Glasgow International.
The Tesco Express convenience store in the newest section of the terminal could be followed by similar shops at other airports and stations, the retailer said.

It will occupy a unit beside domestic arrivals, built as part of the airport's Skyhub d
evelopment two years ago.

The store, which is expected to start trading in October or November and create some 20 jobs, will remain open from the first to the last flights every day but could potentially operate round the clock.

It is aimed at both arriving passengers collecting groceries on their way home and the airport's 1,200-strong workforce.

Spokesman Tony McElroy said of the potential for airport and other transport-related expansion: "It's an opportunity we are keen to explore. We will be watching closely the customer feedback."

Glasgow airport managing director Amanda McMillan said: "This is great news and I'm very proud that Tesco, which is undoubtedly one of the strongest brands around today, have chosen to open their first airport store here."

Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports said it had no current plans for supermarkets.

Edinburgh's expanded departure lounge, which was officially opened on Wednesday, includes new shops such as up-market beauty products chain Jo Malone and Italian handbag store The Collection.

#2..You being a regular flyer at Glasgow have first hand experience.? Seriously though, if cheaper sandwiches etc are on offer airport staff will be thrilled. Something tells me though that there will be some protectionism for other franchise holders.?

#3 The article states that it is to be located in domestic ARRIVALS. I believe virtually all franchises at GLA are now airside so this will have zero affect on them.

Competition for Boots who already have captured cheap sarnie audience.

On a separate note:

Can see British Airways and tesco merging. U can already use ur tesco club card points on ba flights.

#7 No competition for Boots I would have thought? Aren't they airside. Tesco will be locatated after domestic arrivals.

Might as well turn the whole terminal into an Asda since there is no demand for air travel from there anymore - not from passengers or airlines.
