FOUR Scottish restaurants have maintained their positions in The Good Food Guide 2009’s list of top 40 restaurants, Britain’s best-selling annual foodie bible, which is released today.
Alongside prestigious restaurants such as the Fat Duck, (number one) and Gordon Ramsay (two) is the Creel – a tiny seafood restaurant in St Margaret’s Hope in Orkney.

The Good Food Guide, compiled by anonymous reviewers for the consumer watchdog
Which?, is vital to restaurateurs when many people are cutting down on dining out.

The top Scots are Restaurant Martin Wishart in Edinburgh (14th place), Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles (23rd), the Creel, Orkney (32nd) and Kitchin, in Edinburgh (38th place).

There are also six new Scottish entries in the guide – Creel Restaurant, Dunbar; Abstract, Edinburgh; Champany Inn, Linlithgow; An Lochan, Glasgow; La Vallée Blanche, Glasgow; and An Lochan, Tighnabruaich.

Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck maintained its number one position – the only entry with a ten out of ten score.

Restaurant Martin Wishart scored eight, signifying a restaurant “close to or at the top of its game, showing faultless technique and impressive artistry”. Andrew Fairlie and the Creel both scored seven while Kitchin was rated six.

Elizabeth Carter, the guide’s editor, said: “These chefs, [currently scoring seven or eight out of ten] all have enormous talent and could become the next Blumenthal or Ramsay.”

Mr Wishart said: “This is a pretty amazing score and I’m delighted for my customers, my staff and myself. It shows a consistency of service because the reviewers can be anyone writing at any time on any service.

“Customers are more aware of not wasting their money on restaurants who don’t provide a good service.”

Alan and Joyce Craigie, who have run the Creel at St Margaret’s Hope on Orkney for the past 24 years, have put their restaurant up for sale, saying they would like to “downsize” to a bed-and-breakfast.

Mr Craigie said: “We’re pleased at having such a high rating. It is a huge compliment and it helps bring customers in.”

Does this mean the Oxo on the pies is hot or the chips on the Calton sannie are ridged?

Huh! And not a single Asian restaurant in the whole list!
What we need is a "best curry" survey!

Brilliant news, especially for Logan Thorburn at the Creel in Dunbar as he's only been running it for 2 years!

#BW, try the Creel in Dunbar, it's astonishingly good value for money. Logan hands out brilliant frozen bloody marys or similar aperitifs while you're looking at the menu, then you also get sorbet between the courses. I was there with my mum and for 3 courses with a bottle of wine we paid £50. You can't get that in many places...

Have been to Restaurant Martin Wishart, Edinburgh and found it probably one of the best restaurants I've been to although at the end of the meal i had to hand over a kings ransom i am hoping to go again when I've remortgaged the house.
