MOTORISTS may be able to legally display the Saltire on their number plates next year under a plan drawn up by the UK government, it was revealed yesterday. At present, drivers could face a fine.
A spokeswoman at the department for transport said legislation is likely to be put to parliament in the new year in a move to enshrine the right to fly national flags.

Jim Murphy, the Scottish Secretary, said the move was "great news for Scottish motorists".

As usual, the UK government is completely out of touch - the wearing of Saltire plates was legalised quite a few years ago.

Typical of NuLab to try to take the credit for something they had nothing to do with - a bit like their claiming a 2 1/2 percent drop in VAT will kickstart the economy when shops are dropping the price by 30-50%!

#3 Padraig.

Typical of that muppet Murphy too. Presumably his master, the Quisling Maggie Broon, gave him permission to make that statement.

According to Wikipedia many EU Member States already allow a similar choice.

All Federal German Landers have their own regional flags
and car number plates display individual Lander insignias and stamps.

"A spokeswoman at the department for transport said legislation is likely to be put to parliament in the new year in a move to enshrine the right to fly national flags."

Folks in Scotland might care to ponder here the need for legislation to give us 'the right' to fly our flag. Seems a little grudging of the British state never to have allowed this before. Scots should not forget the recent Olympics, when China refused to fly the Scottish flag on the basis that Scotland is not a recognised country, internationally. Bit of a letdown that, for folks like me who think Scotland is a country. Seems you have to be independent to be like all other independent countries, where you can fly your national flag without asking permission from an often hostile neighbour.
