Ryanair to unveil new capital flights

RYANAIR will announce about a dozen new routes from Edinburgh today in its biggest single expansion in Scotland, The Scotsman has learned.
The Irish no-frills airline will base at least one aircraft at Edinburgh Airport in a move that comes only two months after it unveiled its first five routes to continental Europe from the Scottish capital.

There was speculation yesterday that the new routes could include Berlin, and Krakow, Lodz, Poznan and Wroclaw in Poland, plus several Spanish resorts. Some are already served by other airlines from Edinburgh.

Well the flights to Poland will bring polish immigrants into Edinburgh to take Scots workers jobs and the Spanish flights will take Scots holidaymakers to Spain so less will spend their holidays in Edinburgh.

Does Ryanair still get Route Development funding for these 'new' routes?

Eric from "Lothian" - do I detect a note of sour grapes? Goodness knows why. You should be thrilled that new flights to Europe will be available from your local airport, saving you your 30-year tradition of treking through to the west. Then again, since you have such an appalling attitude to Edinburgh and its economic success and massive appeal for foreign visitors perhaps you're better off sticking to Prestwick. Backward attitudes like yours belong as far away as possible from Scotland's booming capital city.

Eric (5) You sound very bitter. Isn't this good news for Edinburgh - Scotland's gateway for foreign tourists - and indeed for the whole of Scotland that Ryanair will be extending the choice of direct flights. Your rather jaded views in the Scotsman discussion forums are becoming not only tiresome but patently ridiculous. Well done, Ryanair! Obviously they didn't bother ringing anyone in "Lothian" while doing their research into what routes would pay them.

#1 how do Poles take Scottish workers jobs?? These are people who are willing to come to our country and take jobs which can't be filled by the folk whose idea of work is signing their name on a bit of paper once a fortnight. The Poles are welcome here.

It will be disappointing if some of the routes are already served by other airlines. I can't see the point in allowing that - yet more half filled planes.

#16 His delusions of adequacy are certainly indicative of what you describe but one would need a more extensive diagnosis from a multi-disciplinary team to be certain.
To be pitied or to be scolded? I would suggest the latter as he is under no obligation whatsoever to engage in these forums.
The one benefit of his ill-informed haverings and slaverings is that one instinctively knows the Edinburgh area to be doing well enough when Eric is provoked into one of his regular and ill-informed rants.
As for the substance of the newspaper feature - the expected announcement can only be good news for passengers throughout central Scotland and I wish Ryanair well in providing further travel opportunities.

I have never flown with this airline but they did fly over 49 million earned seats in the 12 month period to 31.01.2008. How much more 'real' do you need?

Now confirmed with 17 new routes, the first starting in March but the bulk starting in September.
Great news for Scottish air passengers and great news for the employment it will create.

"Not a real airline". How do you define that then ? They are the largest airline in Europe by passengers carried. Folk here squabbling about Glasgow v Edinburgh and no-one asks why it takes an Irish airline to connect Scotland to so many places. Where is our Scots airline?

#4 Joe the plane spotter that’s kinda tragic livin in Livi, loves Edinburgh - but airports are best - I’ll bet he’s got his brian eno album on richt noo.

#9 Cok eye - scared o the schemies - had yin to many run-ins wi shell suit yoof so posts umself as some kinda superior vengeful figure but should really visit the shrink and get over it.
