KENNY MacAskill, the justice secretary, yesterday urged parents to hand over replica weapons or airguns if they found their children in possession of them.
And he warned that if they did not do so, their children were at risk of being shot in a case of mistaken identity.

Mr MacAskill was responding to a survey which found that 85 per cent of the guns recovered by Strathclyde Police are air-powere
d or replica guns, with some carried by youngsters as young as 12.

A total of 107 airguns, BB guns and replicas have been seized by the force's firearms unit since the start of this year. And more than 100 others were confiscated by officers on routine patrols, the force said.

The figures were revealed as police issued a stark warning about the dangers of carrying replica guns.

Officers voiced concerns that people are becoming increasingly willing to use the weapons with a "total disregard" for the consequences.

Young people were found carrying weapons, the force said – mainly young males in their teens, but there were also reports of children carrying weapons in their school bags.

Mr MacAskill said: "The age of those possessing and using them is frightening. Not simply for the danger they pose to others but the danger they pose to themselves.

"Parents have a responsibility to make sure kids do not get or have access to these weapons and the best thing you can do is hand them in to police."

He warned that the danger of airguns and replicas was to the "misguided youngsters who are using them".

He said: "They face not only the consequences if they use it but also perhaps being shot by an armed forces officer who has to protect our communities."

Speaking on a visit to Strathclyde Police firearms training department, in East Kilbride, Mr MacAskill said the survey reinforced his argument for stronger air weapon controls. Asked if the findings would strengthen his argument, he said: "I believe it will. This further indicates the extent of the problem we face."

Assistant Chief Constable Jim Green said Strathclyde Police officers had found youngsters as young as 12 in possession of replicas.

He said: "What we have to deal with is young men carrying, or indiscriminately brandishing, air and or BB guns and replica firearms in the belief that it makes them look important.

"They are not thinking about the possible consequences of waving what, to all intents and purposes, looks like a real firearm."

Urging parents to help tackle the problem, Mr Green added: "What worries me most is the age of people carrying these weapons.

"Although mainly young males in their teens, it would appear those involved are getting younger with reports of schoolchildren carrying weapons in their schoolbags.

"Disturbingly, figures also show that young girls are now involved too."

Unless I misunderstood, these are toy guns or at most BB or Gas guns, with very few of the later. Based upon today's and the last few days editions, it seems the problem is Knives. So how does picking up toys affect knife fights or attacks on unarmed citizens? So you know, I drive a pick-up with a 308 semi behind the seat in the window. Have never had any problems with road rage or theft, have had to shoot a bear once though. MRD

#1 mrd. Pay no attention, it's only that waste of space, Kenny MacAskill, flapping about trying to look important, and make out that he is actually doing something useful.

This is the waste of space that doesn't want to gaol anyone under the age of eighteen, even if they are violent neds and thugs. This is the waste of space who wants to raise the price of alcohol, and put limits on the shops selling it. He wants to punish everyone for the actions of a small minority, but by introducing new and unworkable legislation, rather than enforcing existing legislation.

He'll be wanting parents to take toy cap guns and water pistols from kids next, under the threat that they might be shot by the police if they are seen brandishing them.

In any event, it is the London Metropolitan police that go around shooting people, though primarily people who are unarmed, and totally innocent.

MacAskill is obviously still steeped in his former Labour Party Stalinist roots, and wants to micro-control everyone, and everything they do.

Thanks, Guga II
Now it makes sense, we have people like that over here too. MRD

Strangely I find myself agreeing with Guga re McAskill yet again but surely he must have been misquoted, no politician could really be stupid enough to come out with this inane rubbish.

If the cops are so incompetent as to shoot a kid carrying an airgun then it is time to disarm them or is Kenny promoting extrajudicial execution and just getting us used to the idea.

"It's your fault you got shot, what do you expect? How are the polis expected to tell the difference between a table leg and a machine gun when they can't spell either. And I warned you in the Hootsmon on Tuesday 14th July 08 etc etc. etc."
Oh, he's not real politician? That explains it.

Kenny shut up, there is a bye election on and the SNP could do without your help.

Hmmmnnn, I'm starting to lose a bit of respect for the powers that be if this is the kind of garbage they are begining to spout.
He's not related to the Prof. who, in another story, wants us all to carry carbon-ration cards is he?

Is McAskill really promoting a shoot first policy? I'm sure there must be some degree of misquote but threatening to shoot children! I'm shocked.

This fool does not live in the real world...

"And he warned that if they did not do so, their children were at risk of being shot in a case of mistaken identity."

Why? What's going to happen? Is Robocop or the Terminator going to mistake them for an international terrorist and shoot them on sight because their computer program tells them to do so? Is Judge Dredd going to eliminate them because he IS THE LAW.

Every time MacAskill comes out with something, it gets more removed from real life and more into fantasy land. It appears that he has moved on from the 1920s American pre-prohibition, temperance era and is now living in 22nd century Armageddon where cops are programmed to vapourize anyone who looks as though they may be holding a weapon and ask questions later.

His comments are in fact an insult to the police. Firearms officers are highly trained and will NOT simply shoot on sight. They only open fire if there is no other course of action available to them and they are increasingly using non-lethal rounds nowadays.

Yet again, MacAskill is off on one of his wild fantasy journeys and spouting rubbish without thinking. How the hell does someone like that get into a position of power? That is a far more important issue than parents owning harmless replica firearms.

HOw will this help anything?

Do you think that the parents whose kids go to school with replica guns know or care if they have them?
Do you think that they read this newspaper or any other newspaper? Do you think that this appeal by MacAskill will do any good?
No and the sad thing is he must know that it is pointless posturing as well....

BTW #5 "McAskill comes across as a real numpty on TV. Alex needs to replace this idiot." Classic comment - sums up the SNP to a tee - get past the top two or three and they really shouldn't be allowed out on their own in the political world....

#10, Said it before, and I'll say it again, if you end the idiocy of encouraging idiots who cannot or will not support themselves to breed, then this, along with many other of our social problems will soon cease to exist.

Also, when MacAskill announced his "summit" on guns, and it was reported that members of the general public were to attend, I e-mailed him expressing my interest as a member of the shooting community for many years. Needless to say, I was not invited, although the junkie scum oxygen thieves who sold drugs to the lowlife who shot their kid with the airgun were. This shows exactly who the snp pander to.
