POET Edwin Morgan was named the winner of Scotland's leading book award yesterday, collecting a £25,000 prize at the age of 88.
Morgan, who was made Scotland's first national poet, or Makar, in 2004, won the Sundial Scottish Arts Council Book of the Year Award for his latest poetry collection, Book of Lives.
The result was announced at the Borders Book Festival in Melrose in an event last night hosted by the writer and comedian Rory Bremner.
As well as poetry, Morgan's work over the past 50 years spans literary criticism, award-winning translation, essays and drama.
A Book of Lives tackles issues ranging from the "war on terror" to the Battle of Bannockburn and the opening of the Scottish Parliament.
Award judges described the book as "a prodigious creative achievement".
