Mine rescue after caver felled by gas
A MASSIVE rescue operation was launched last night to save an unconscious caver from a disused mine shaft after he was overcome by gas.
John Ireson, 37, from Livingston, is in a serious condition in hospital.
He had been part of a group exploring the mine at the Wisp in Newcraighall when he got into difficulties.
Attached to his safety rope, he fell unconscious ten feet down and had to be rescued by members of the fire service.
It is understood a gas alarm – which activates if a dangerous amount of gas is detected – went off when he was down the cave.
Mr Ireson is a member of The Grampian Speleological Group. The group's warden, Alan Jeffreys, said his fellow caver was unconscious in intensive care.
