A POLITICIAN has stepped in to help save a beer called Skull Splitter that is produced in his constituency.
Alistair Carmichael, MP for Orkney and Shetland, has tabled a Commons motion noting "amazement" that the alcohol watchdog, the Portman Group, is considering a complaint that the name could imply violence and that its Viking-branded bottles have an aggressive theme.

The brewery says it is named after Thorfinn Einarsson, the 7th Viking Earl of Orkney. The 8.5 per cent-proof ale, produced by The Orkney Brewery, could be withdrawn from sale if the complaint is upheld.

Sounds like the PC brigade, along with the trendy lefties and tree huggers are at it again. Maybe they'd like to rename it "Peaceful Beer", or "Warm and Cuddly Beer"?

Skull Splitter may be a perfectly apt description for a beer with 8.5% alcohol.

It could describe the type of hangover you should expect or what can happen when you try to climb the stairs of your close after consuming 12 bottles.

What a load of tosh.

The name is not about violence or aggression. It refers to both a huge headache and also the idea of something so tremendous it blows your head off (metaphorically speaking.

Its poetic language. Its a local beer, with a local identity - and a great taste.

Leave it alone.

I've supped a few Skull Splitters in my time. Beats any of the Super larger stuff anyday!

What about the wine label called "Fat B@stard"?
Or the Whisky called "Sheep Dip"?

Split hairs. Split skulls.

This is rich! The Portman Group accused of political correctedness!!!

Just shows HOW utterly meaningless, prejorative and flexible the term PC has become.

It really is beyond belief how people who plainly know so little about beer are allowed to pontificate on the subject.

If it was up to me, I'd get the lads to hold them down, pour a few pints down their necks with the aid of a funnel, shave half their heads and cover them in fag-ash mixed with treacle---then tie them to a lamp-post outside and pull their trousers down.

That should make them look the ridiculous fools that they are.

No 8 Alternative(High-Octane) Fuel Head (phew didn't think I was ever going to manage to get that right).

Looks like you've already imbibed a couple - but I do like the imagery!
