A MOTHER-of-four who cheated a benefits agency out of almost £23,000 said she used the money to buy her children gifts.
Annette Slater, 42, claimed income support for three years after getting a job as a debt collector in Midlothian.

She pled guilty at Edinburgh Sheriff Court to gaining £22,962 in income support which she was not entitled to by knowingly failing to
notify the Job Centre Plus of her change in circumstances.

Slater, of Dick Terrace, Penicuik, also admitted further charges of obtaining £5800 in carers allowance and £104 in housing benefit and council tax and this was accepted by the Crown. She will be sentenced later this month.

The court was told Slater, who is the carer of her mentally handicapped daughter, had been the subject of a lengthy investigation into her fraudulent claims after it was discovered she began working as a debt repayment collector and selling loans in Penicuik in October 2003.

Jim Grant, defending, said divorced Slater had been trying to compete with her ex-husband to buy their children gifts and holidays.

"Her plan was to keep this going for a few months but she found it too easy," said Mr Grant.

Sheriff Kenneth Maciver called for background reports on the first offender and said it was unlikely Slater would ever manage to repay the money.

"We are dealing with a very, very substantial fraud effectively from the common purse," said the Sheriff.

"The more that this happens the less money there is for genuine needs and it is important that the courts deal with this type of situation effectively and in a way that will discourage people from considering defrauding the public purse," he added.

Did you know that Annette Slater is an anagram of "Unprincipled cheating greedy slag"?

And even worse she's a debt collector.

Must be why we used to send our criminals to Australia. Perhaps we should resume the practice!

"im Grant, defending, said divorced Slater had been trying to compete with her ex-husband to buy their children gifts and holidays"

Poor attempt to hoodwink the court for a lighter sentence.

I wonder how much she actually spent on the children

H'mmm- reminds me of a story a few years back, when a Labour MP, one Nigel Griffiths, was caught fiddling his expenses and using the money for 'treats' (not described)for his disabled sister. Did he not fraudulently claim around £40,000 for the rent of his constituency office, 'forgetting' that he already owned it. Easy mistake to make! My, how the other MPs laughed as they told him to be more careful next time. So Ms Slater's defence should be she thought she was Wendy Alexander and there was no intentional wrongdoing.

The benefits agency are not doing their job properly! If she took a job she would have been paying tax and NI, how did she not get discovered for 3 years? No wonder she thought it was easy! They should employ more people instead of relying on grasses phoning up their stupid hotlines.

Give her a medal and a seat in one of the parliaments!!

She's no better or worse than any of our current crop of snouts in the trough politicians.

Under Labour, the benefit brigades have grown massivley.
It is now a generational thing, with some idle trash going straight on to benefits without ever getting a job. You need to come over here and see how we deal with our unemployed. No more labour hand-wringing, no more "we cannae dae it, we cannae dae it." Lets smash these regiments of loafers. Where there's a will there's a way. The One euro an hour job, coming to a waster near you.

#13 - totally agree. Maybe the government should start hiring more staff top catch people like this and then dishing out proper penalties.

Students have to pay back their debt why not make her pay it all back!
