DETECTIVES are puzzled by a bizarre series of car thefts by "joyriders with a conscience" – who later return the vehicles.

At least eight cars were taken and returned without the owners initially noticing they had been stolen.

The offences only came to light because keys were put back in the wrong place, the cars were in different positions or the mileage had changed.

The vehicles were driven long distances before being returned to properties in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.

But on one occasion in September, a car stolen from the town crashed almost 30 miles away in Innerleithen. Three people were seen running from the car.

All the other thefts, since Boxing Day, resulted in the cars being returned.

The thieves entered often insecure homes, removed the car keys and went for a drive before returning the keys and vehicles.

Police said there was no pattern to the days of the week on which vehicles were taken. The cars targeted included Vauxhalls, a Mini Cooper, a Nissan, a Citroën and Ford Fiestas.

Years ago I drove my Lada from a shop in Glasgow's Byres Road. I noticed the dash ornaments looked a bit different. It took a couple of blocks before I noticed this was not my car and I abandoned it. I often wondered what the owner thought to see his car moved a few blocks and if the polis believed that anyone would steal a Lada.

Been there, started up wondering when we got the tartan rug before noticing my car was parked directly ahead. Car keys must have got better in recent years. Obviously a more considerate and better class of joyrider in Jedburgh, round here they burn them out.

Be thankful for these returnees. In Leith, Niddrie and Gimerton, they burn the cars they "borrow"!

This used to go on years ago. Someone had missed the last bus home, "borrowed" a car to get them home and returned it the next day. The only time they could be done for anything (theft) was if they forgot to replenish the petrol they used.

I use steel steering and pedal locks, have fitted a disable-lock to my battery posts, and remove the fuses for my fuel pump and lambda sensor whenever parking the car.
