AN Edinburgh-based housing company is offering to cover gas and electricity bills for new householders for two years, despite a fall in their own profits.
Family owned housebuilders The Walker Group saw pre-tax profits in the year to the end of September dip to £12.8 million, compared to £27.2m in the previous year, while turnover at the firm fell from £80.6m to £44.8m.

But new home-buyers at the company's Roman Fields development in Dalkeith will now be able to shave thousands of pounds off their gas and electricity bills, with the Walker Group agreeing to cover bills up to the value of £2500 for the first two years.

Sandy Casey from Walker said: "Househunters nervous about buying in today's economy will appreciate a helping hand to secure their dream home.

"This special offer available on the remaining homes at Roman Fields will no doubt give a financial boost to families looking to move up the property ladder."

The firm is headed by founder and chairman Mike Walker and his son Bruce.

There's no such thing as a free lunch or in this case free power supplies.
Nobody, not even a big company can just hand out £2500 gifts or they would be in liquidation in no time.
The £2500 will simply be added to the cost of the housing stock and the buyers will fork out through their mortgage.

#1, Didn't the Walker group go into liquidation, or very nearly, a few years back? A remarkable reincarnation if they did.

#2 It wasn't Walker Group that went into liquidation a few years back, it was another company that just happened to have a similar name, Walker being a common surname and therefore a common company name. I can't now for the life of me remember what the name of the liquidated company was.

As before, anything to avoid lowering the price.

Buyers should wait. Prices have a long way to fall back to reality.
