SCOTS have agonised for years over what song could provide a suitable national anthem. Opinions have swung from the Corries' rousing Flower of Scotland, with its defiance of the English armies, to more traditional words like Robert Burns's A Man's a Man for A' That.
But when one of England's leading acoustic bands heads to Glasgow for the Celtic Connections festival this month, they will bring with them a song billed increasingly as a national tune for the English. The single Roots, from the band Show of Hands, written by frontman Steve Knightley, has been played at rugby and football clubs, extensively on BBC radio, at St George's Day celebrations and even Druids' gatherings.

"I've lost St George and the Union Jack. That's my flag too and I want it back," the lyrics state. It is hardly a call to arms, however. Roots bemoans the lack of English musical heritage and identity against that of Celtic and other nations.

"And we oughta be ashamed of all we walk, Of the way we look, at the way we talk, without our stories or our songs," the song says.

Knightley was inspired to write Roots after the former culture minister, Kim Howells, said his idea of hell was listening to second-rate English folk singers in the pub.

"I've lost St George and the Union Jack. That's my flag too and I want it back,"

All together now " AAAAWWWWW....!

The poor wee English havnae got a national identity anymore! Why? Because they've spent centuries subjugating other nations under the Union Jack!

In the aftermath of Culloden the Hanovarians banned experessions of Celtic culture such as the clans system, the Gaelic language and traditions! However George IV turned up in Edinburgh on a state visit wearing a kilt and pink stockings!

I think most English will find that their country - like Scotland - is not quite as hemogenous as they would like to believe! People of Celt, Viking and Anglo-Saxon and Norman origin make up the patchwork what we call The United Kingdom!

Most people in Edinburgh for example probably share more ancestry with say the North-East of England than they do with Glasgow or the Highlands!

I thought it was that song "Swing low, sweet chariot"?

I certainly heard that at the last Calcutta cup I was at. Quite a nice song too.

Flower o Scotland is a bit of a dirge unfortunately.

No problem with some englanders realising they have no culture to speak of, but someone needs to tell them the "Union" Jack was never THEIR flag.

They will also come under fire from unionistas who throw temper tantrums when anyone calls it "Jack" and not "Flag" .That been said , good luck to them. Hopefully, we will see the emergence of an Englandshire Independence movement in the future.

#6:

It's about time that the UK adopted a decent national anthem. Perhaps one of the following:-

1. We are the Champions (Queen)
2. Light my Fire (Doors)
3. Heroes (Bowie)
4. The Chain (Fleetwood Mac)
5. I Feel Free (Cream)
6. Alright Now (Free)
7. Don't Look Back in Anger (Oasis)
8. Disco 2000 (Pulp)

Well, come on! don't we need a national anthem that is a bit more engaging than the usual durges about god and the Queen, medieval armies or leafy lanes?
