PLANS to make 800 bicycles available in the city centre and Leith for people to hire have moved a step closer.
The £2.8 million initiative, would initially focus on the trams route, but could later be extended to the New Town, Stockbridge, Marchmont and Merchiston with up to 2500 bikes in operation.

Bikes would be available to rent from secure docking stations, with payments only accepted by credit card, which would deter vandalism as users could be traced.

Councillors have now approved moves to hire a consultant to work up detailed plans for the scheme and possible funding, such as advertising or sponsorship.

Be really adventurous with this scheme and extend it into the council housing schemes.

Is that a "NO WAY" I hear??

silly idea and what a waste of money that could be spent on better things to improve the city.
Are they going to build cycle lanes then?
Still guess the tourists will love it, after all they are the citys main concern arent they.

doh I meant the citys main priorty (yes me silly)

And hey if people want to ride bikes, good on em, but I still think the money could be spent elsewhere (ie get the bloody roads up to standard for a start)
