THE launch of the new iPhone has been hit with supply problems, with one retailer warning it had received only limited numbers of the gadget.
O2, Apple's network partner for the handset, said each of its stores would have on average "a few dozen" iPhone 3Gs to sell at the UK launch today.
The retailer warned on its website that numbers would be limited for weeks, but customers would hav
e one "by the end of this summer".
Sales at O2 outlets will be limited to one per customer and two for business customers. Both O2 and The Carphone Warehouse had to suspend online orders for the iPhone earlier this week, citing "incredible demand". The Carphone Warehouse was due to resume online orders today, saying orders had increased more than tenfold compared with the original.
The updated version of the combined iPod, mobile phone and internet browser features a high-speed internet connection and GPS satellite positioning. It will cost substantially less than its £269 predecessor but will still only be available in the UK from 02, The Carphone Warehouse and Apple stores, and will only work on the 02 network.
O2 and the Carphone Warehouse will give away the 8Gb version of the iPhone to customers who sign up to tariffs costing £45 or £75 a month. The gadget will cost between £59 and £159 for customers on other tariffs.
