RUSSIA is to send two manned submarines to the bottom of the world's deepest lake to learn more about its unique ecosystem.
The small submersibles will descend more than one mile to the bed of Lake Baikal, where scientists will conduct geological and biological tests, expedition leader Anatoly Sagalevich said.
The lake, a world heritage site, is home to more than 1,700 species of plants and animals, many found nowhere else in the world.
