A LINK between hairspray and a genital defect in boys has been uncovered by scientists.
Researchers found women exposed to hairspray in the workplace during early pregnancy more than double their chances of giving birth to a son with hypospadias. The defect – in which the urinary opening is beneath the penis – normally affects one in 250 boys in the UK. Though it can be corrected by surgery before a boy's first birthday, more severe cases can lead to urinary, sexual and fertility problems.

Hormone-disrupting hairspray chemicals called phthalates are believed to be responsible. The same study, by London's Imperial College, showed folic acid reduced the risk. An increased risk was only seen in women whose jobs led to high exposure to hairspray, such as hairdressers, beauty therapists, researchers and factory staff.

Yeh! Ms Doren ~1,

I thought "Hairspray" more of a 60s thing as in the 1960s

Suzanne my DYW, has long natural curly hair, sometimes she tries to straighten her hair, but never uses,..."hairspray", more a gel or moose, or that oily stuff you get!

Being a 'dab-hand' Suzanne's Husband, has helped her with her hair, many a time. :)

I even have washed her hair, many a time!, is this because she wants 'pampered'?

As re: the article, I do believe as True!

Let's have a quiet moment of sympathy for those conflicted and pre-pubescent boys who grow their hair long and try to copy some of the hairstyles of Elizabeth Taylor in "Cleopatra".

THEY are the sufferers and grow up to be "hair-flippers".

Dont know what to believe now Charles...this causes this and that causes that...one thing I do wonder about tho' is the pill...and how we (women) pee it out into the lav...into the sewers and ultimately into the sea...and of course it all comes back to haunt us (?)...not that I'd stop taking it for a moment cos you see...when I come off it I turn into a boil encrusted psychotic neurotic with shredded nerves...and at my stage in life I do not wish under any circumstances to become pregnant..not that I did before...bit like asking a cat if it wants a bath....

I have no proof..but I am sure the scalp is highly absorbent...all those follicles...so tell your wife to be carefull of what she smears on her barnett...

I wash the hair of "Him indoors" which he thoroughly enjoys and we indulge in mutual foot massage in the bath...very relaxing indeed..

I have a book..cannot remember the name of it...but it exposes all the ingredient names in the products that we use on our skin..hair and body etc..."Cosmetics unmasked" or something like that...an eye-opener...I had a friend who was pregnant and wanted a hair conditioner but not something that could possibly harm the foetus...simple jojoba oil (it is actually a liquid wax) with a couple of drops of essential oil was sufficient....most of these products are full of useless ingredients that are the end result of the useless torture of animals...and I believe many are harmfull....

3...Strewth Timothy Charles "Hair flippers?"...I aint seen the "Lizzy Cleopatra" look on a lad since the seventies...thank féck...its back to the foppish fringe now...or long curls...the least contrived look about it the better....you will not see many "Egyptian Queen" hairdo's on the go now...unless perhaps certain folk are confused about their gender...she did have exceptionally beautiful eyes tho' eh?...

Of course there are the Skateboard type grungy lads with the "Dont give a shoite" hairdo's that could be construed as "Left bank of the Nile"...I suspect, however...that this is more of an attitude than fashion statement.....

How's tricks in Canada?

A few days ago, a boy had a heart attack and died, due to using a deodorant. People do not realise what chemicals there are in all these sprays.

Women should never dye their hair whilst pregnant either. It can cause (amongst other things) heart defects.

Best line is to be chemical free.

My dear lady, WHERE have you been?

Many posters have been SICK with worry and fainting with trepidation at your absence from these threads.

As for the "Queen Cleopatra" look, the last time I saw it was at some drag show I was dragged to in the early nineties.

It seems in Ottawa and Montreal and Toronto the look for teenage boys (16, 17, 18, 19) is the long, slightly styled hair of the 70s.

Please explain EXACTLY what you mean by "How's tricks in Canada" because it could be misconstrued by some mischievous people.

Am waiting for a delivery of food for Christmas that should arrive by 9:00 a.m.

It is from a company that you pay over the year and they deliver free and make an appointment because there is frozen Christmas turkey and dressing and pie and bacon and other stuff.

It is highly efficient and there will not be a rush at Christmas to buys things because I already have them in my freezer, cupboards, and fridge.

All I have to do is buy suitable wines and maybe bake my own mincemeat pie.

I seem to be highly organised this year and I am eager to see what $300 (Canadian) of food looks like and how long it will take us to unpack and store it.

Anything I don't use or decide I don't want will be given to the various charities that need food at Christmas time. They seem to be increasing and their client base is also increasing.

A sign of the worldwide economic crisis?

I sort of got discombobulated by the sudden reappearance of Doreen the Shebeen and went on a tangent.

Like most chemicals found in most products, they have unfortunate and sometimes disastrous side-effects that may not show up for years.

This unfortunate effect on the genitalia of infant boys will have to be surgically corrected later on if the boys are to grow into child-producing men and continue the race.

It reads like something out of "The Island of Doctor Moreau" or "Frankenstein" even or even David Cronenburg's gruesome film about female genital abnormalities, "Dead Ringers".

Sad for the mother and even sadder for the male infant.

Let's hope modern medical and surgical methods can correct the abnormality.

8...Sounds like you will be having a right old knees up Timothy Charles...I dont do Christmas...cannot hack it and choose to go feed the local squirrels...weather providing on the 25th. Ideally I would have a huge bag o' chips steaming with salt and vinegar with maybe a pickled onion on the side if I am really indulging myself. I am sure "Many posters" will have been enjoying my absence and waxing lyrical about how gruesome and vile and vulgar I truly am....I'm blushing...heh heh heh...

"How"s tricks?"...as in how's things?...and not a question re the quality of persons who work in the sex industry over there...no...

Anyway...there is evidence, is there not...that fish are developing genetic mutations...hermaphrodiphic fish etc...and they are saying that the 'Pill' is responsible for this...interesting thought....

Next year I may assume the posture of the "new frugality" and serve miniature turkey weiners on red and green toothpicks with cranberry dipping sauce from the can and followed by miniature mince pies (bought) and polished off with some Baby Duck (a horrendous pink fizzy wine preferred by tasteless teenage girls) to toast the Queen during her "Christmas Message".

THEN we can switch to the expensive and tasteful wines that my guests have brought and I have bought.

As for the "sex industry over here" it is a world completely unknown to me except in anecdotes related by friends and relations.

I LIKE your idea of a simple and basic Christmas out and about in the fresh air and communing with nature whilst feeding squirrels and other vermin.

Well now, could it be me Mom's use o' hair spray could
'ave caused things to grow a bit shorter? If this is true, I could use it for a handicap. Recon Ye?
