Eat a higher-calorie diet and boost chance of having a son, says study

WOMEN could increase their chances of having a baby boy by upping their calorie intake when trying to get pregnant, research revealed yesterday.
Eating a daily bowl of cereal was also linked to having sons.

The study found that women with the highest calorie intake before conception were more likely to have a boy than women with a lighter diet.

The researchers, from Oxford and Exeter u
niversities, said the results suggested that the dieting habits of women in the western world could help explain the falling male birthrate.

The latest research, published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, looked at 740 first-time mothers in the UK.

The women were asked to keep records of their eating habits before and during the early stages of pregnancy.

The study revealed that 56 per cent of women who ate more than 2,200 calories a day before conception had a boy, compared with 45 per cent of women who ate less than 1,850 calories.

The researchers found that 59 per cent of women who had cereal every day had a son, compared with 43 per cent of those who had less than one bowl a week.

Women with sons also had higher levels of nutrients in their diets, such as potassium, calcium and vitamins C, E and B12.

Over 40 years there has been a consistent decline in the proportion of boys being born in western countries – a drop of about one per 1,000 births annually.

Dr Fiona Mathews, one of the researchers from Exeter University, said: "This research may help to explain why in developed countries, where many young women choose to have low- calorie diets, the proportion of boys born is falling."

IVF research suggests that high levels of glucose encourage the growth of male embryos, while inhibiting female ones.

In humans, skipping breakfast depresses glucose levels and so may be interpreted by the body as indicating poor conditions and low food availability.

Dr Mathews said having a boy was also linked to higher levels of potassium – which could amount to as little as an extra banana a day before conception.

Higher levels of salt were also consumed by those having boys, though the researcher warned that eating large amounts of salty food could raise blood pressure.

"We could say that if you increase your calorie intake slightly while trying to conceive you may be flipping the odds of you having a boy slightly in your favour," Dr Mathews said.

Bridget Aisbitt, of the British Nutrition Foundation, said there were no specific recommendations for diet prior to conceiving, apart from taking folic acid supplements to prevent spina bifida.

Professor Stuart West, from Edinburgh University, cautioned against using diet to try to influence the sex of a child.

"First, the effect appears to be relatively small, with the sex ratio varying from only 45 per cent sons with low-calorie diets, to 56 per cent sons with high quality diets," he said.

"Second, similar data in animals such as non-human primates shows huge variation between studies, and so it would be key to determine the repeatability of these results.

"Third, diet will have other effects for both the parent and offspring."

Sorry! but my DYW(darling young wife) wants twin Baby girls!

What can a Man Do,..in my Shoes,?

Afterall our bedroom is,,'ALL-PINK'! even the Bedding!

'GO-WITH-THE-FLOW' is what I Say!, forget the,

"higher-calorie diet"!

Men don't need the diet to make a Baby Boy, if I tried that one, my DYW would,

'Starve Me To Death',, not Quite!

Any Guesses,?

'YEP' You guessed, before my Death, DYW would make sure she got the part of me she wanted! :-DD

IM NOT complaining however!

What a Lovely Way To Die! :D:-**

So a high calorie diet produces a boy, eh?

At last I understand the slogan on Yorkie Bar wrappers:-

'IT'S NOT FOR GIRLS!'

Cankers at the Cyber Shebeen @#5,

Ta for the thoughts, the whole thing wasn't that great, they found zero in the sack they cut open,
(biggest one only) :-)

But however they managed to find enough,..'Tadpoles' in the tissue, for three embryos, don't know what the quality as in, is it good as,?
However, now that I presume frozen, I am not of the surgeons cutting knife yet!

They told me,
"when Suzanne goes in for her treatment, we might have you (me) in again, for the same procedure as today" :-((((((

It wasn't too bad yesterday, the pain!, but by 'gosh' I am suffering now! :-(((

Imagine going through all that, when a nice day in the Fairy Glen in Dunoon would've worked wonders for DYW and yourself.

Good advice is often worth what you pay for it!
I gave you a proven cure for nothing, but you wouldn't even try it. Hell mend ye, Laddie.
Cheers,

Horrible Cankers.

My DEAR young lady,

What ARE you on? I don't understand the import of what you are saying. Are you taking your liquid refreshment of the "wee dram" variety VERY early in the morning - even before your delicate feet hit the floor?

Charles Linskaill,

Hi TimW, 'long time no see as it were' nice to see you back.

Haggis MacBagpipes, its still far too cold in Scotland for that!

What would I do, if it, 'just fell off' due to the cold,?
:-))

Charles Linskaill

Good morning to you, sir.

I was in New York City and Washington to see the Pope of Rome.

In NYC I got a ticket to the mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral - the largest Gothic cathedral in the US of A - and it was quite a collection of bishops, archbishops, monsignors, cardinals, priests, seminarians, nuns, deacons, etc.

Since I was on the aisle and in the 15th row I got a nod from His Holiness even though I am not Catholic. I don't remember meeting him but then maybe I did when visiting Rome last year. Must look at my collection of gewgaws to see if I have one of his personal medallions that he distributes to those who actually meet him.

Have a great day and maybe your children will be one of each gender.

TimW,
"maybe your children will be one of each gender."

Well that would be the, 'Ultimate Dream Come True'

But for me, as long as DYW and Baby/Babies are safe and healthy that's all that matters at end of the day.

I don't know how it will all work out, if it works atall, one thing I do know, I just feel Soo Sorry for my DYW, a person that will really Love and care for a child she 'pines for'

For most it is all so easy to get pregnant, is it not ironic, for someone that will make a brilliant mother, its a case of,..'Cant Have' Baby that easy, if atall!

But we will NEVER give up hope and a prayer!.

Too cold Charles? Here it is 4°C Sunny and not a cloud in the sky...tonight might be different as snow is in the forecast. I have been out and about enjoying the 'balmy' weather.

After what you've been through are you walking bow-legged, like dem darned cowboys? and everyone will ask you "Where's yer horse?" Keep your chin held high, Charles, though yer belly trails the ground.
Cheers,

Paula,

Hmm so as someone who doesn't eat breakfast would they care to explain how I was lucky enough to have twin boys?

Sugar and spice for girls but I don't fancy eating snails and puppy dog tails. And this is about as scientific as that rhyme. So we'll see all those ethnicities who want only sons force feeding their wives cereal, haha.

Haggis MacBagpipes @#13,

Your DEAD RIGHT! I can hardly stand up and the walk is something else, but it will pass I'm sure,
'OH' to be 18 again! NO Worries! and certainly not thinking about Babies! :-)

Isn't life strange,? (well for me it is)

Paula Hi!, yeah remember the rhymes well, also we all know its Daddy that decides the sex of Baby, DYW is convinced she is gonna have Twin Girls, as I fathered two girls previously, wouldn't it be a shock, if it was,
'Puppy-dog-Tails',?

9...Timothy Charles...quite simple really...'Chazza' (Mr Linskaill)was going in for an op to help him and his Dear Young Wife in their quest for a DLB (Dear Little Baby)...pretty painful and could quite possibly have left him walking like John Wayne...hence the stetson and cowboy boots...

No bevvying for me in the morning....recipe for disaster....much prefer my 'Russian Earl Grey'..NYC sounds like a hoot....in fact sounds exactly like one of the late great Freddie Mercury's parties!!....you sure you did'nt wander (unbeknownst to thyself of course)into one of the big apple's gay clubs?...I could get really rude here but I have decided to restrain myself as there may be people of a delicate disposition reading...so I shall refrain from sharing the sacraligious images that are passing through my mind....

Oh by the way Timothy Charles you did'nt happen upon 'Dragonhead' whilst you were there by any chance?...according to his brown nosing trolls the 'great' D.head is currently cruising NYC....can just picture him with a big thick clone moustache and leather gear..heh heh heh heh....somehow I dont think he is too far from this rag......

Good luck to Chazza...a man on a mission and keep a positive attitude...they do say that it helps!
17

Boy Wonder,

23/04/2008 22:27:16
Aw, Charles ... I really hope your little triplets are viable ... but if they're not ... please consider adopting. I'm sure you won't be first nonagenarian to adopt children.
18

Charles Linskaill,

Edinburgh 23/04/2008 23:43:07
BW, your quite the Educationalist!

"nonagenarian" = 90-99!, Where did you learn that one,?

BW, law wont allow 3embyro's to be transferred into DYW, max 2 and this is the last year you can do that seemingly, so we were lucky, if you can call it that!
----
Both embryo's may fail, as IVF has only a 40% success rate
(in Edinburgh which is excellent BTW, UK Top)

But if it works one could become 2babies (twins) or worst scenario for DYW 2 could become 4Babies (Quins)

:-DDDDD

Its all very unknown at this stage, but I am really looking forward to being,..'Full-Time-Super-Daddy) and I will be telling our Babies all about YOU when they are old enough to understand! :-))

Just think me, sitting by the, 'lap-top' (not quite breast feeding the babies) but using mothers milk,

Think I mad now! you ain't seen nothing yet!

Being serious!,
I will Love every minute of this 'Treasured Time' when it comes to pass,
(keeping to the positive attitude, Crankers #16 talks about)

Thankyou Guys and Galls for all your kind thoughts, they really do help, albeit the hilarity mixed in, just adds to, the funny side, which believe me, is at times.

TTC (trying to conceive) over 10years, I could tell you many a funny story, but that's for another day another forum,

Once again, Thanlyou all, you a great lot, even you BW, :-)

All our Love,

I DID NOT have the absolute displeasure of running into Draghead, THANK GOD!

I behaved myself whilst in NYC because I was staying with relatives working at the Canadian consulate in Brooklyn - in fact, my uncle works at the consulate right next door to the sculpture garden of the Brooklyn Museum and his office overlooks it - and did not "wander innocently" to booze emporiums catering to gentlemen and gentlewomen of alternate tastes.
