SCIENTISTS behind Dolly the sheep may develop better treatments for schizophrenia and motor neurone disease within 20 years, it has been reported.
Work has started in Edinburgh using stem cells from human skin, donated by patients at the Western General Hospital.
The experts who cloned the sheep believe they could have a breakthrough within years to help people suffering from diseases of the nervous system.
Speaking at the Scottish Stem Cell Network conference yesterday, Sir Ian Wilmut, behind the project, reportedly said: "There's the possibility that in ten or 20 years there will be much more effective treatments for these diseases because of these skin cells."
The team of scientists – led by Edinburgh University's David Porteous – is working with induced pluripotent stem cells, which can turn into any cell in the human body.
