Four Edinburgh schools back in firing line

THE first four primary schools facing the hit-list for potential closure have been identified, it emerged today.
Lismore, Bonnington, Victoria and Westburn are understood to meet all the criteria – which include poor attainment, falling rolls and high running costs – set by education leaders drawing up the school closure programme.

The Evening News understands this has led to all four being placed on a "high priority" list for closure, though education chiefs insist no decisions have yet been made.

It comes after a cross-party group set up to look at the "rationalisation" of the school estate met yesterday for the fourth time. Although the forum meets in private, sources say the four schools were discussed in detail.

The schools identified were all on the council's original closure list which was scrapped last summer, and it is believed a full list, which will include more schools, could be announced in June.

City director of education, Gillian Tee, however, insisted today that the forum is "not ready to recommend any school for closure".

Parents of children at Lismore Primary were furious after a source told them their school is set to face the axe once again.

The Bingham school has been threatened with closure twice in recent years, with parents setting up the Lismore Parents Action Group in 2004 to fight the plans.

Maggie Paterson, chair of the school's parent council, today vowed the fight will continue.

She said: "I'm not surprised that Lismore is on the list again.

"I'm confident that the Bingham community will stand strong and we are going to fight it.

"We expected they would pick on the poorer communities."

Gail Ross, secretary of Lismore Parents Action Group, said it was "disgusting" that the four schools were again facing the axe.

She said: "It's funny how they are all deprived schools in deprived areas.

"They are trying to take away from the needy once again."

The rationalisation forum, which includes councillors, city officials and representatives of teachers, parents and churches, are deciding on which schools to put forward for closure by examining city schools in "clusters".

It is understood the six clusters are in Edinburgh's most deprived areas, in Leith, Granton, Wester Hailes, Craigmillar, Gracemount and West Edinburgh.

Ms Tee said today: "At (yesterday's) meeting the group discussed population projections, the effect of immigration on school rolls and the Scottish Government's request that local authorities work towards having primary class sizes of 18 .

"The group also took on board feedback from the Consultative Committee for Parents and School Councils on the criteria for evaluating the school estate.

"We are still discussing the primary estate and my officers have been asked to come back to the next meeting of the forum with more detailed information.

"I am absolutely clear that the forum is not ready to recommend any school for closure or amalgamation at this stage."

It was revealed last month that secondary schools in Edinburgh have been given a three-year reprieve from possible closure.

So Lismore closes and the whole of Bingham's catchment goes to Brunstane. I am sure Brunstane Primary School can't wait for this to happen. Oh dear.......... I can see it far enough!

Portboy what does comment mean exactly, you can see it far enough ?
The way we in Bingham see it is that under to terms are we sending our kids to Brunstane, many reason really, but the main few are not a safe route, seperate comunity, but most of all our kids just don't want to go and that's simple really.
Lismore Primary is and will continue to be a great COMMUNITY school we fought hard last time and will fight harder this time of that you can be sure.
Unlike Brunstane last time round we will not be sitting back waiting to reap from others miseries.
Every comunity deserves a school more so a close knit community like Bingham

I dont see the point of closing lismore, brunstane isnt that big or good for that matter, there is a new school nearer just about finished in niddrie aswell, i grew up in bingham and yes there was a good community but not now, too many people want to know your business

#2, completely agree. you misunderstand. It is definately for the greater good that Bingham has it's own community school and that this catchment is not allowed to disperse with the obvious issues you raise. We need Bingham to remain in Bingham.

#3 i agree maybe if the kids went to another area to go to school they wont be so territorial, and may actually look after the area, thousands get put into so called deprived areas but it seems the more they get the more they want! GET A JOB!

#6. If your child was at another school and you were told that 100 kids from Planet Bingham were coming along to join in with their 'territorial', 'close knit', mumbo jumbo blaaa blaaa nonsense, would you be happy.
I DON'T THINK SO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#7 get a grip what do you think happens at high school, too many "adults" dont give kids the credit they deserve, out of they 100 probably 10 would be like that the rest can if given the chance will get on.
children only do what they are taught may that be in school or at home!

#7 what did you say " I misunderstood" think not, why not be honest, yes we are a close knit community but we also are very aware of the problems that life throws at you.
#8 Couldn't agree more about your comment, High School is completely different from Primary and a big culture shock to most kids, and yes learning does strat at home, some kids are not fortunate to get this.

My goodness! A story about school closures and not a peep out of Councillor Marilyn MacLaren, Convenor for Children and Families. Is she still feeling " overwhelemed, " and put upon by officials? Poor dear!

How many times do we have to put up with inaccrate speculation by this so called source and irresponsible reporting by this paper.
Far from under-performing, Victoria Primary recently received an fantastic report from the school inspectors and pupil numbers there are rising, not falling.
You have to question which councillor/official is sponsoring the paper to print this stuff, which clearly is aimed at encouraging parents not to register children at these schools and thus provide a self fullfilling prophecy.
Leith - a deprived area en masse, when was the last time you visited the leith/Newhaven area. The site is worth a fortune, why do you think they want to sell it?
