TOLLS will not be removed from the Forth and Tay road bridges until at least the end of January, The Scotsman has learned.
Meanwhile, crash tests have found that the safety barriers on the Forth Road Bridge will not have to be replaced - saving some £10 million.
Holyrood officials said a final vote on the SNP Scottish Government's plans to abolish tolls is due days before the Christmas recess, but the law would require Royal Assent about a month later. The government previously said that tolls would be removed by the end of this year.
The Forth Estuary Transport Authority said crash tests using a replica of the barriers bordering carriageways on the Forth Road Bridge's main span had proved successful.
The tests were ordered because the barriers do not meet current safety standards and it was feared they might not be strong enough to prevent vehicles crashing through them.
