Rangers on course for Champions League clash with Kaunas
RANGERS are on course for a clash with Vladimir Romanov-backed FBK Kaunas in the second round of the qualifying for the Champions League.
The Lithuanian club are closely associated with Hearts as their main sponsor is UKIO Bankas, a bank which Romanov is principal shareholder.
Kaunas were handed a favourable draw in the first qualifying round, after being paired with Andorran side Santa Coloma. If, as expected, the Lithuanian side triumph, they will then go on to face Rangers in a two-legged second-round tie, the matches to be played on July 29/30 and August 5/6.
The Ibrox side reached the final of the UEFA Cup last season, coining in around £12million in the process, only to lose out at the final hurdle to Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.
The two sides last met in European competition in a Champions League qualifier back in July 2000 and Rangers progressed after a 4-1 victory at Ibrox.
Rangers' new signing, former Hearts striker Andrius Velicka, was on the bench that day and his old Tynecastle team-mates Audrius Ksanavicius and Nerijus Barasa both started for the Lithuanians. However, Barasa, who has since left Tynecastle, was ordered off after 64 minutes of the match.
