Rangers keeper Alan McGregor signs new deal

RANGERS goalkeeper Allan McGregor has signed a new five-year contract, the club have confirmed.
The Scotland international had been linked with a move away from Ibrox this summer but is now committed to the club until 2013.

McGregor, 26, told www.rangers.co.uk: "I'm delighted with the five-year deal, it's good to get it settled and hopefully now I can just get on with pre-season."

McGregor was in fine form both at home and abroad last term, with his performances playing a big part in Rangers' impressive European run.
His season came to a painful end when he suffered an ankle injury in the 2-1 defeat to Celtic at Parkhead in April.

He was forced to look on from the sidelines as Neil Alexander deputised in the UEFA Cup final, the Scottish Cup final and the title run-in.
The end of the season brought speculation of a move to the Barclays Premier League, with both Tottenham and Newcastle reportedly planning a summer swoop.

But McGregor, who previously had loan spells at St Johnstone and Dunfermline, insists staying with Rangers was always his first choice.
He said: "I met the chairman Sir David Murray] a couple of weeks ago and I think he realised I always wanted to stay at the club, especially after breaking into the team."

Manager Walter Smith was pleased to clinch the long-term deal for his first-choice goalkeeper.

Smith said: "We're delighted to secure Allan on a long-term contract.
"He had a great season last year before his injury.
"He's come through the youth ranks at the club and is now an established first-team star and that's testament to his hard work and ability."

Good to see Walter is taking care of business so early in the close season.

The last thing we want is a long dragged out affair where our keeper decides to move at the last minute, leaving little time to find a suitable replacement.

Or in other words.. an Arthur Boruc situation.

Great bit of business what ever happens next. Smashing keeper who will continue to improve for Rangers and a right good asset should we decide to sell.

Were an offer for 8m to come in i would be seriously tempted to take it and strenghten other areas of the team.

Quality bit of faint praise for Alexander - "He was forced to look on from the sidelines as Neil Alexander deputised in the UEFA Cup final, the Scottish Cup final and the title run-in."

So that went well...

All the other posters observing that this means nothing are correct - if memory serves, it's been some weeks since any of the English red-tops had anything other than Cristiano Ronaldo on the back page, and he is of course under contract till 2012...

I don't agree that either McGregor or Boruc are average, incidentally. I've worked down South for 15 years and watch the Premiership week in, week out. Both of them would go to the top of queue in any team apart from Chelsea or Liverpool. Van der Saar is still just about better at Man U, but he's not going to last forever. The extended European runs we've seen from the OF in the last couple of years have been due in significant part to the contribution of these two; if they'd been stuck with average keepers neither would have gone past Christmas.

Dripping with hope that one.

Meanwhile...... Borat has been seen shaking loose dirt from the cleverly concealed bags in his shorts at training in Lennoxtown, while Jim Vinegar and Mouthpiece Caldwell diverts the "guards" by kicking lumps out of an old vaulting horse draped in red, white and blue. The tunnel is nearing completion, and is his only hope of engineering an exit.

Dear me, you boys in blue seem to be obsessed with the Art of goalkeeping. I thought this was an article about McGregor? On the basis you want to talk about Artur-who is buying him?-Ninny yesterday stated he was definetely going but couldn't tell me where.

Of course the second question is if McGregor is so amazing a keeper why are the clubs allegedly chasing Artur not just trying to buy McGregor, after all he does play for a selling club?

The 8 goals conceded against the Tic while at Dunfermline-was one of them not scored by wee Lenny? McGregor truly is in a select band of keepers if that is the case!

Yes, goals scored years ago when he was developing as a keeper, and guess what he still is, whereas Boruc, decent shotstopper but has fatal flaws as a keeper, cannot marshall a defence, cannot command his area, cannot handle crosses (I find that one odd for him!) and is an idiot should be at his prime as a keeper, yet his flaws are there for all to see

BEMUSED EXILE,

So much for the "Rangers re-build"! I've been telling anyone who would listen on here that nobody who was integral to the team would be leaving this summer, and that the financially successful season that RFC have just enjoyed would mean that WS had money to spend without having to recoup it through transfers out.

Walter has juggled his strike-force, spending the Sebo money on Velicka, and anticipating the Cousin money to bring in Kenny Miller, whilst investing heavily in the future by stealing Kyle Lafferty from under the nose of WGS. In other areas of the team, Walter has opted for continuity by, for example, re-signing Weir while trying to secure a deal for Davis.

He will dip into the transfer market again this summer, but I'm sure that he feels, not unreasonably, that a team who won two domestic cups, had an excellent SPL campaign, and reached a European Final, must be doing a helluva lot more right than they're doing wrong.

Onwards and upwards. C'mon the 'Gers.

Aye, and when that move comes, it will be for a maximum of £500,000, yet good old Idee insists that his valuation in the Lafferty deal was around £1 million.

Of course, Idee also stated 6 months ago that Alan Hutton would attract the interest of only "minor" Premiership clubs, and that when he moved it would be for a "lot less than £6 million"!

Sales of imodium increased by 500% today when it emerged that ReaRangers FC were unable to unload their psychotic striker Daniel CoosErse (pronounced, Coos, pause for breath, NErse).

The headbutting striker had been thought to be on his way to Fulofitham, for £3m, however this was scoffed at by people at the club.

One club insider stated “CoosErse, who is he?? Is he that player whose own support continue to turn on?”

It is widely understood that CoosErse has been deeply unpopular at his previous clubs and caused rifts amongst the players. This behaviour is believed to have travelled with him to Ipox.

One ReaRangers player, gave the Riot Survivor some information on the situation. He has asked to remain as anonymous in print as he is on the park To protect his safety we’ll call him Scotlands Captain Fantastic.

“This diddy comes over here from France with a zero body fat level, starts telling us off fur eating kebabs and drinking beer in training and thinks he can get away with it. Ah said tae him, Dae ye think so? PLG tried to get us fit and ah got him punted. Ah’m the great untouchable at Ipox. At that point he headbutted me, he’s been headbutting folk ever since. Even by my standards this guys is radio rental. Ah’m pure terrified so ah um.”

David Fruitloop Jamjar of the ReaRangers Silly Teets (RST) stated. “this is bad news for minty. Feckin great news for us, we’ve enlisted him into the ReaRangers Riot Division”

Scotlands Captain Fantastic can be seen leaving the training ground in tears every day.

McShagger is a decent keeper, but that is about it. Standing between the sticks with a packed defence in front of him he knows that the opposition will have few chances. Even with the "imperious" Ugly Betty and "redoubtable" Weirysome in front of him, not to mention Mutton for half a season, he still managed to concede more goals than a certain other keeper who has to put up with a "shaky" defence. He is not even his Country's No. 1, and Gordon is nowhere near the best in the world. In fact at 26 McShagger has only played 106 times for his team, twice being put out on loan, where he conceded plenty of goals. He has not played in a WC Finals and he has not played in a European Championship Finals. In fact, has he won anything of any note? Just what makes him "exceptional" or "great"? Exactly. Nothing.

BEMUSED EXILE,

Did McGregor actually concede more goals than Boruc? I'm not saying that he didn't, but let's remember that Alexander was between the sticks for many of Rangers matches in the second half of the season. Your "shaky defence" remark, dripping in sarcasm, actually makes me believe that you regard Celtic's defenders as being better than those at Rangers, in which case you would expect McGregor to lose more goals, so you're destroying your own argument there.

As for the opposition having few chances, I seem to remember a match in Bremen where the opposition had around 35 attempts, with McGregor only being beaten once, and I believe that Barcelona made closing in on 50 chances over 2 matches in the CL, but only beat McGregor twice.

So he's certainly a fine keeper, and with a new season dawning, and a new manager in charge of our National team, Craig Gordon will need to come flying out of the blocks to keep his place.

People have said in the past that you don't have to be smart to be a good goalkeeper, just agile.

Well, McGregor has well and truly thrown that remark in thier faces.

His combination of intellect and agility made him one of the best keepers in Europe last season.

With five more years at Ibrox to mature and improve his game even further, it gives you goose pimples just to think about the heights he will undoubtedly reach.

Punters in Govan will sleep well tonight.

not as good as boruc but has the potential to oust gordon as scots no 1 the only down side for him is his extra curricular activities which have finally caught up with charlie adam, same will happen with mcgregor if he doesn't watch out, really good keeper though great to see him struggling with that screamer from naka !! 4iar

Our "shaky" defence was undoubtedly better than yours in the SPL, check the stats. In the last OF game watch the sequence when The Champions whip in four corners in a row into Rfc's six yard box. McShagger actually tries to go for them but doesn't get near. All goalkeepers are fallible, yes, but AM does not command his six yard area, yet alone his box. When you opened up to a 4-4-2, only on the odd occasion admittedly, you conceded goals for fun. McShagger is part of that defence. He is a good keeper but is not anywhere near great.

That's exactly my point mate. If you believe that Celtic's defence is better than Rangers, then you would expect the Rangers keeper to concede more goals than Celtic's keeper.

If both keepers were of equal ability, then the one with the better defenders in front of him would concede the fewer goals.

Celtic's defence is constantly derided and yet the lynchpin of it, THG, saves them yet again. Just like he does for Poland in the Euros and WC. Your team played defensively more often, therefore you would expect fewer shots on target against you? Glad that you admit that The Champions have better defenders than UB and Weirysome!

Being 55 with grandkids means I am on the hook for the holiday. As my wife said, its for you're daughter and the kids, you can afford it.

And here is me looking to get back to Scotland for the Liverpool friendly, so it might be worth it. lol

I am a spritely 47. Always annoys Swordsman. The wee edge on him there.

Two reasons I settled really, dabble in a wee bit of martial arts, and cannae afford the ticket home yet.

Still saving, mind you...

Never been to Canada, but might be going soon with work. My grandad was there until he was about 30. He had a few stories (some of which may have been true)

Started oot doing Karate in Scotland on the back of the Bruce Lee movies. lol

Aikido is what I dabble in these days.

Nice art, aikido. Using the other person's strength and momentum to defeat them.

A bit like what Rangers did to Fiorentina.

I trained to black belt level in Shotokan karate in my 30's and 40's. Gave up a few years ago due to a worsening lower back condition.

Decided to have kids instead! ;)
