Published Date: 11 July 2008
DANNY Shittu is poised to sign for Rangers after Watford opened talks with the Ibrox club over yesterday's increased £1.5million bid.
Vicarage Road chairman Graham Simpson, who claimed on Monday that Shittu would stay, appeared to give in yesterday afternoon after Rangers upped their earlier £1.2m offer. The clubs are in final negotiations over the £1.5m price, with centre-back Shittu, 27, expected to agree personal terms over the weekend.

The defender, who has impressed for Championship play-off semi-finalists Watford, will opt for Rangers ahead of a late offer from Turkey – understood to be from Fenerbahce or Galatasaray.

Shittu, whose main motivation for the move is to play Champions League football, is privately keen to test himself at a big club after dropping into the Championship with Watford.

He was a £1.6million buy from QPR two years ago and established himself as a mainstay of manager Aidy Boothroyd's defence at Vicarage Road.

The 6ft 3in Nigerian, a man mountain at 15st, believes his performances in the African Nations Cup proved he is able to compete at the highest level.

His ambition to leave Watford seemed destined to fail earlier this week when chairman Simpson insisted: "Danny is still with us and that's the way it is staying."

However, the lure of a £1.5m cash influx to fund the new season's promotion bid forced Simpson's hand – and Shittu is now set for his dream move north of the border.

Celtic were also keen, as were Sunderland, but Shittu had made it clear he preferred Rangers, a fact which is expected to usher through agreement on personal terms without further delay – once the clubs have ironed out minor differences over his £1.5m price.

Shittu had been due to report for pre-season training with Watford on Monday, but his workout is now set to be taking place in Glasgow.

Rangers, however, were dealt a blow yesterday when they learned that captain Barry Ferguson will be out of action for up to four months with an ankle injury, and there was more bad news from the training ground as it emerged Steven Smith will also miss the pre-season preparations in Holland and Germany, again with an ankle injury.

The 22-year-old suffered a minor knock and should be out for around a week as he bids to re-establish himself in the first team after pelvic and groin problems restricted him to two appearances in 18 months.

Meanwhile, summer signing Kyle Lafferty has spoken of his intention to become a first-team regular at Ibrox in his debut season.

The 20-year-old is one of three forwards brought to Ibrox this summer for a combined total of around £7million, alongside Kenny Miller and Andrius Velicka.

"I don't really want to play two or three games at a time then get dropped for a couple as well," he told Rangers News.

"Whenever I'm not in the team, I'll watch the other players in my position to see what they do. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up stuff from them."

Rosscobhoy,

This time last year he was being touted for a £4m move to a lot of lower level Premiership teams, and both Celtic and Rangers. We didn't think he was worth it then, and i don't think he would be worth it now. He is no better than Andy Webster, and far worse than Bobo Balde, the player he has often been compared to in the press up here. Big squad does not equal strong squad.
8

KILBOWIE,

11/07/2008 00:43:42
Big, strong, athletic, ball-winner. Should be suited by the physical nature of the SPL. Could be a good signing & not over-priced at £1.5m. His distribution is not wonderful, but that is not why he is being signed.
I would think he will be more at home against Big Jan, than Skippy.
Interesting.
9

Rosscobhoy,

11/07/2008 00:46:53
Kilbowie, a 2 foot 5 stone dwarf could look at home against Hesselink at times. As much as i love the fact he scores so many big goals, you should not be buying players based on how you think they will do against the weakest link in your opponents team. The guy will struggle against anyone with a bit of pace and movement. There is a reason he hasn't made it to the top.

Balde was a far better player than Andrews, who in my opinion got a very good press because of his nice guy image. He got away with so many wreckless and mis timed challenges it was unreal. Balde has had his moments(The concussion he gave De Boer stands out) but he was always hung out to dry in the press. I'd still say that as limited as he is, he is probably the best defender in Scotland, with the exception of Cuellar(Who i think will struggle if Rangers play a more attacking game)
11

KILBOWIE,

11/07/2008 00:57:43
Rossco, I am a Celtic man, but I try to be objective.
I think Danny Shittu could be a good signing.
I don't see Big Jan as a weak link.
Bad players don't get into the Dutch Euro Championship squad.
12

Rosscobhoy,

11/07/2008 00:58:49
Thepundit, i'm good friends with a QPR fan(went to Loftus Road a few times while Shittu was in the starting 11) and have seen Shittu on many an occasion, he is a decent defender but found his level in the championship. Lafferty i've seen twice, once when was sent of against Arsenal, once for N.I. playing against Spain. I haven't seen enough to comment on him, but think that kind of money on potential is a big risk.

Cuellar for the most part had a good season last year, but struggled in games that Rangers left any kind of space in behind. He is an excellent siege type defender and will block anything thrown at him, but when it gets in behind he struggles. Rangers style played to his strengths. If Rangers change i think he may struggle to adapt. If i'm wrong, i'll hold my hands up but i've still to be convinced.
13

Rosscobhoy,

11/07/2008 01:01:02
Kilbowie, Big Jan scores a lot of important goals, but he is not the greatest of players. I think we were maybe spoiled with Sutton, who was a similar player but 10 times better. I think he made the Holland squad as he was a massive variance on the other forwards they have.
14

jerrymanders,

11/07/2008 01:07:17
Just where is Shittu going to fit in? Ugly Betty, Weirysome, Webfoot, Bigfoot? It's like up front....too many but none good enough.

Against Dundee Utd on more than one occasion in the cup final, the league games at Tannadice and at Ibrox(Although Weir and MCCurry took all the credit for that last one)

Against Zenit he was badly out of position for the goal.

Was caught out against Hibs in the first game against them, also at Tynecastle when they humped you.

I'm not saying he is a bad player, i just think he still has a lot to prove.

Your comment on Bobo, how many big teams was he outstanding against? He made plenty of mistakes but was also outstanding in countless CL and UEFA cup games, as well as a few Glasgow Derbies.

And Shittu may be decent in the Championship, but i still say he is no improvement in what Rangers have, and is below the standard that Celtic and Rangers should be looking at. He is a big strong player, but a limited one at that.

He is totally p@sh at right back (ask Aiden), just as Gary Caldwell was for us.

Star o' Rabbie Burns,

I'm struggling to work out WS's signing policy. He needs two central defenders in his team, so he can already pick from: Cuellar, Weir, Webster, Dailly, Papac and Broadfoot. Leaving aside arguments regarding quality - he would seem to have more than enough quantity. Why Shittu?

He needs two full/wing backs: he's got Whittaker and Smith, otherwise, Broadfoot, Dailly or Papac has to fill-in.

He has the injured Ferguson, Hemdani, Thomson and maybe Adam for his three central midfield positions, with Dailly as a fill-in.

Wide midfielders: Burke (injured), Beazley, or fill-ins Novo, Adam, McCulloch or Whittaker.

Strikers: Boyd, JCD, Cousin, Miller, Velaskis, Naismith (injured), Novo.

Utility/attacking midfielders Gow (still there) Fleck (has to be handled gently at his age).

It appears to me, he's bought more of what he already has, while not strengthening the areas where he seems to be lacking in numbers.

I don't get it.
18

Raskolnikov,

11/07/2008 01:17:04
thepundit - You said Shittu would sign for Rangers when it was in all the papers a few weeks ago. Nothing clever about that is there?

However, I was on here yesterday telling everyone it was now virtually a done deal. I think it was I who prompted the Scotsman story ;)

Hutton being sold and Broadfoot playing at right back won us the league. The £9m gamble they took came back to haunt them.

You are probably right with your last sentence, my thought is still that paying £1.5m and £15-£20k a week to a distinctly average player is a waste of money. You would have been as well paying extra for Berra who would at least have a sell on value should it not work out, or Russel Anderson who has proven himself in Scotland and would probably cost about half of what will be paid out in this deal.

I have to agree with most of what you have said, i can't see much sense in Smiths signings so far either. He hasn't strengthened the team, only added numbers to the squad with players who have far from proven their ability.
23

11/07/2008 01:32:53
#32 BTO - I did not claim it to be a joke. I claimed later that my statement "Now THAT is a decent signing" was meant to be sarcastic.

You're not very clever are you BTO?
24

Raskolnikov,

11/07/2008 01:35:50
thepundit - why do you keep going on about Bobo Balde's lack of ability?

Here's a wee hint - Bobo Balde is not in Strachan's plans and hasn't been for over a year now. If he was actually playing in the team your point would be valid.

It frustrates the life out of me that he can't get near the team. I can't for the life of me understand how he doesn't get in the team in front of McManus. Both players are very similar in style, but Balde is far more imposing and inspires far more confidence for me.

smith seems to get a decent return from most of the players he buys, this guy has a good grounding in british football at a reasonable level.i have no doubt he will do well.what smith is doing at rangers seems similar to what o neill did at celtic, hes buying good players with british experience,no superstars.rangers are on the right track. meanwhile the shettleston harriers are waiting on a big name signing to appease the unwashed, i hear ronaldo wants away from manchester hahahah
28

Raskolnikov,

thepundit - was that the exclusive that Rangers give out cards to season ticket holders and Celtic don't?

I was on a Celtic fanzine last night and a poster posted a link to the Kenny Millar column yesterday saying: "Have a look at what this guy thepundit is saying".

I won't embarrass you by posting all the responses of the other contributors other than "That Rask fellow really took the buffoon to the cleaners didn't he?"

I'll post the link if you really want me to.

Raskolnikov,

#44 thepundit - So who do I have to convince? Gordon Strachan? I think he knows it already, wouldn't you say?

Rosscobhoy - Have to disagree. Balde is ok in the SPL when Celtic are 2 or 3 up, but in the big games and especially in Europe, he is a complete nightmare. McManus is much better because he can pass the ball forward effectively and doesn't try anything fancy. Balde couldn't pass water and his only real strength is his physique and his strength, but clever forwards can counter that without a problem.

Football is all about opinions though. We'll have to agree to differ on this one.

We're not looking for big name signings to appease us, we don't need them. A decent left back, and another decent centre forward will improve us by a long way.

So it's another central defender for Ibrox. I am puzzled by the signing considering WS just tied up money for a season for Weir and Daily, I dont know how much they ar being paid a week but I would guess between 25-30k for the both of them,

If WS had his mind set on Shittu why resign the old veterans again, take that money and spend it on Bosman midfield player who can offer something different in the middle of the park.

We look at the moment a team overloaded with strikers and defenders, I hope there is more to come.
49

Raskolnikov,

11/07/2008 04:09:21
thepundit - so you believe that because a Gers poster who has a brain came on and criticised your senseless and pointless comments, he must therefore have been a clone, whatever that means?

I have heard some pig-headed, arrogant, burying-one's-head-in-the-sand, denials in my time, but that has got to be the craziest ever.

You remind me of the redneck American who was telling the world through a press conference how he had been sabducted by aliens and was told the earth would be destroyed in 6 months time. When asked what language they spoke in, he said, "American you thicko."

I am more than happy to admit that when someone on an internet message board claims that another poster is a "clone", that I do not fully understand what he or she means, but then perhaps I live in the real world where I understand exactly what a clone is, but in cyberspace? I'll leave that to you and your sanitised and befuddled imagination.

Interesting that you have "proof" of this clone. Here I go again - what does that mean?

Finally, comment #92 above has got to be the most absurd, risible and comically-constructed piece of nonsense I have ever read on any message board. I take my hat off to you thepundit.

It is a veritable masterpiece. A tribute to bullshitters the world over. You are a genius.

thpundit.

Let me be perfectly clear about this.

You said "Bemused and above it all" was a clone.

I asked, "Who was he cloning?"

You said, "Himself of course" as if I had asked a silly question.

Now hear me out matey. I am truly intrigued.

If I were to clone myself, there would be two mes now would there not?

If I then spoke to you and you said, "I know it's not you, it's a clone" I could understand that. But if I then said to you, "Who am I a clone of?" and you said "Yourself of course" then you see my confusion?

If Bemused was not Bemused, but a clone of Bemused, then which one is Bemused?

Bemused? You will be.

I cannot wait for your answer to this one. I have my wife and her friend sitting here giggling inanely at this turn of events.

Please do not let us down matey.

You call that proof? You are crazier than I thought. Honestly, if you were making all this up with the intention of being funny and entertaining, it would be brilliant and I really would think very highly of you, but the saddest thing of all is, you really are being serious. You believe all this stuff. You are not TRYING to be funny.

So Samaras for 2m then? That's a great deal. City wanted 3m but Celtic were offering 2m. Seems City decided to take the deal just to get the player off their wage bill.

Maloney and Tamas to follow, plus a central defender and possibly another striker. It's looking good.

Also, I see the bi-annual Robbie Keane rumours are surfacing again. I can't see it, but after watching the YouTube video of him and Damien Duff celebrating in the pub after the injury-time win over Rangers, who knows what could happen?

You can feel the sexual tension between Pundit and Rask from here. I think you should just get it over with lads.......

I agree with what Daillyman said earlier. We seem to have 281 central defenders and even more strikers but with no centre mid or fullbacks. As we are constantly reminded by the celtc mob tho there is plenty time left in the transfer market so no need to panic yet. Make no mistake though if we start the season with this squad i will be worried.

It'll no bother me this weekend right enough. Finish at 2pm then its off to T In The Park till monday!!

Good morning all.......The transfer windae gets better and better, ANOTHER average to poor centre half to go with their 9 average to poor centre forwards, goan yersel Wattie.

I had the pleasure of watching Danny boy ply his trade for Blackpool beside Clarke Carlisle, Carlisle was the standout and Danny was a bombscare.

I am absolutely thrilled that he's signing for SS rearangers, should be a bundle of laffs.

You really have to wonder, with Rangers signing so many lower league players, how they expect to be any better than a lower league side?

We don't need to make signings. No doubt we'll add one or two, but we have a settled side who won the league last year and are more than capable of repeating that feat.
I'm delighted that Davie Weir has decided to sign a contract extension at the Shoe box.

I am just finding it very amusing that the man building Rangers team for season 2008-09 is Gordon Strachan!

I well remember the dark days of the Macari era when he did his buying in the English first division, he managed to fashion a team of English first division standard, absolutely awful.

I've watched Danny boy at first hand playing for Blackpool, thank God it was only a rumour Celtic were interested. He's a smaller version of Bobo without the football skill, this is a great signing for rangers opponents.

Looks like Peter Lawwell has pulled another rabbit out of the hat, he's been Celtic's best signing EVER.

Man City to cut losses over Celtic target Samaras

Celtic are set to land Manchester City striker Georgios Samaras for a knockdown fee.
The Daily Mail says City will take a £5m loss on failed striker Samaras when the Greek international moves to Celtic for a knock down price of £1m in the coming days.

City bought Samaras from Heerenveen for £6m in January 2006 and agreed a provisional fee of £3m when they loaned him to Celtic last season. But City have accepted £1m less than that in order to smooth the switch to Parkhead

BARGAIN!!!!!!!

"provisional fee of £3m when they loaned him to Celtic last season. But City have accepted £1m less than that in order to smooth the switch to Parkhead"

So, is it 1m or 2m?

I wouldnt say 2m was a bargain. More like a more realistic price than 3. 3m for the big divin ladybhoy would have been a rip-off.

If that's true about Samaras signing up long term, then I for one am delighted.
I don't think people appreciate how inflated the transfer market has become just in the last year. This is the worst time in a long time for teams like Celtic and Rangers to buy players. One of the reasons I'm glad Celtic don't have to completely rebuild their teams as Rangers do.
84

Richardinho,

11/07/2008 08:45:50
btw, I'll accept some of the criticisms of Samaras, but by and large I think he's a decent player. He scored a few goals last year if nothing else.

#139 JJ, Living up to your name there matey, Sammy scored more goals in just 10 appearances (6 as sub) than our 5th choice striker Kenny Miller did in a season.

I simply cut n pasted the article, whether it is 1 or 2 mill is irrelevent, he's a good purchase at the £3 Mill tag.

I'm actually content with what we have and believe that we have a squad already which is more than capable of winning the league (I know that you know that too) but the addition of quality will not be a disappointment.

No jealousy here matey. McDonald i rate, JVOH and Ladybhoy i dont, simple as that.
I reckon at 1m Velicka is much better value and will score more goals.

#146 JJ. Your like that wee knight on the bridge in the monty python scetch having his limbs removed one at a time and still he wants a fight.

You don't rate JVOH, fair enough.

He's scored 20 goals in an injury interupted season, he scored a VITAL goal against SS, he scored the goal that won the league and he's in the Dutch squad.

Him or Miller? hmmmmmmmm, that's not a difficult one is it?

#155 We can afford it.

SS rearangers on the other hand?

Ha ha mate that was actually pretty funny! Pat yourself on the back! Great film!

Im pretty sure you wouldnt say you rated Novo and he scores more important goals, plays less and cost a tenth of the price. Its all relative mate.

How about McGregor....Has played well
Cuellar....Over rated, not very good when anything other than a 5 man midfield is parked on the 18 yard line.
Whitticker....Wasn't great at Hibs and hasn't improved, Aiden must smile when he sees him on the team sheet.
Thomson.....Kightweight and prone to rash challanges when being over run, check his yellow card count for evidence.
Velicka.....Don't know, gamble which may or may not pay off.
Lafferty.....Sit beside a Burnley season book/card/ticket holder at work who is delighted. £4 Million for a player that couldn't displace either Cole, Akinbayeh, Jones or Blake from the Centre Forward slot is a good bit of business in his eyes.

Good to see Rangers going for a player who's name is very appropriate in relation to their bigotted/sectarian fans who disgrace Scotland at every opportunity and sing their bile including singing about a battle that took place over 300 years ago in another country that has nothing to do with Scottish football.

Coming from a club that has had its own problems re sectarianism and is most reknowned worldwide for booing the Pope's 1 minute silence.

Also your club are a laughing stock and you lot have as much guts as Frail. I dont make anywhere what Frail does and would not let my employees treat me that way.
I also would not stand there and let a foreign dictator ruin my club.

Yes we have our problems and a minority DO shame the club but Hearts fans have absolutely NO moral highground.
