COUNCIL leader Ewan Aitken today backed a bid to relocate thousands of civil servants from London to Edinburgh.
He welcomed the work of Glasgow-Edinburgh collaboration director Laura Gordon, who addressed a conference in London to pitch for jobs being moved out of Whitehall following a government review.
A review of Whitehall departments by Sir Michael Lyons in 2004 said the UK could save £2 billion a year over 15 years by moving 20,000 posts out of London and axing a further 7000 jobs through "efficiency measures".
Cllr Aitken said: "Edinburgh is Scotland's capital city and seat of government.
"It does, however, have a much lower proportion of public sector jobs in the UK than the average for other Scottish local authorities.
"Edinburgh and Glasgow combined offer a sizeable and educated labour supply, together with fantastic quality of life."
