PROSTATE cancer death-rates have fallen almost four times faster in the US than in the UK since the early 1990s, a study has shown.
The reason could be due to different approaches to screening and treatment in the two countries, say researchers.

But the jury is still out on whether blood tests, which are carried out far more routinely in the US, contributed to the better record across the Atlantic.

Prostate cancer screening uses the PSA test, which looks for raised levels of a protein called prostate-specific antigen.

PSA leaks out of the prostate gland into the blood when cancer is present, but can also appear for other reasons.

So far, there has been no robust evidence to indicate that carrying out PSA tests on large numbers of men has an impact on prostate cancer mortality.

Yet the test is almost routine in the US. In 2001, 57 per cent of US men aged 50 or older reported having had a PSA test in the past 12 months. By contrast, each year between 1999 and 2002, an estimated 6 per cent of men aged 45 to 84 had the test in the UK.

The research, led by Dr Simon Collin, from the University of Bristol, compared death rates in the UK and US between 1975 and 2004.

Hey there All,

This study is just another reason to abandon the Socialized Medical System you folks have, and for Americans to NOT vote for Hillary Care or Obama Care.

If you want a real scare, start looking at comparatives of survival rates for cancers that affect women: UK vs USA stats.

After reading those numbers, I'll wager you Brits will want to abandon the NHS at Warp 9.

Lastly, please take the ShroomHead from CA, we really don't want him.

Cheers from the Rockies

I haven't read the report either, but do lead time bias and unecessary over investigation get a mention?

"So far, there has been no robust evidence to indicate that carrying out PSA tests on large numbers of men has an impact on prostate cancer mortality"

So why does the US do it then?

Considering half the population in the USA cannot afford Medical insurance-- what’s the beef??
International statistics suggest that early diagnosis does not improve mortality.
PSA tests are of little value unless they have been taken over a number of years. High PSA are normal in some men—not worth having yer jewels off for.
The DRE (poke in the hole test) is possibly the best premier test for friability, hard masses, or enlargement. Ultrasound is also good if you have a worry—but go to the bog first. If the test is unfavourable a needle in the bahooky is required for a biopsy. After all the bother you will possibly die of something else.

A new test the PCA3 is another test you can plague your doctor with although you may have to pay for it in one way or another.

Hello Snaggie,

'..half the population in the USA cannot afford Medical insurance...'

My dear Snaggie, you're off your rocker old fellow!

The pop of the USA is appx. 300 MILLION and the number touted by every Left Winger in the Dem Party of note, including both Hillary and Obama, mark the 'uninsured/underinsured' (a very key distinction) numbers at 43-47 MILLION.

Can you do the maths? That's appx. 14.33%-15.65% of the US population, NOT 50%!!!!

Do you Rad Leftists never tire of lying about easy to verify facts?

Mind you, of the 43-47 MILLION people without insurance or UNDERINSURED, only 20% of those numbers are actually without insurance. Further, a large portion of these numbers may include illegal aliens!!!!! They are NOT entitled to ANY American benefits, as they are NOT Americans.

Again, can you do the maths?

That would be 8.6 MILLION to 9.4 MILLION out of 300 MILLION Americans (such as myself) whom do NOT have health insurance.
Mind you, if we are feeling too 'iffy' we can STILL go to Emergency Rooms for help, should we need it.

This means that 2.7%-3.15% of all Americans, are without health insurance.

A far cry from your lie of 50%!!

Considering all the numerous studies comparing the American System with the Socialized/Universal Health Systems in GB and Europe, we Americans are FAR MORE likely to survive serious diseases, such as cancers, than are our British and European counterparts, even our Canadian counterparts, just North of the Border!

There was a study a bit ago, comparing female cancers and survival rates, in the USA and Canada.

Breast cancer survival rates, cervical cancer survival rates, etc., were all significantly LOWER in Canada than in the USA. American survival rates for these cancers compared to your Brit survival rates was MUCH higher even than even the Canadian data! You Brits are in a bad way when it comes to cancer and staying alive, compared to either the Canadians and certainly we Americans!!

Hello Snaggie CONT,

Same stats go for heart/lung related ailments!

So go ahead and lie all you want Snaggie: perhaps you'll change your tune if you end up with one of these life threatening diseases! Though given the continued poor stats of your dear NHS, you won't have to worry too long!

Cheers from the Rockies

I think this is one of the reasons, from the article:

Nearly all men will get prostate cancer if they live long enough. Usually the cancerous cells will stay confined in the prostate and pose little heath risk as long as that remains so. But, if any of the cancerous cells escape the prostate and establish themselves in other parts of the body, that man is doomed. The PSA is the male equivalent of a Pap smear for a woman. It is an early detection method and allows doctors and patients lead time to determine which course of treatment is best.

Hey doggone ya got me dude.
The US has a mixed public-private system of health insurance. It comprises:
· Federal Medicare programme, covering people aged 65 and over and those who have been disabled for two years or more (12% of population)
· State Medicaid programmes—covering children from low-income families and in some states their parents as well as providing long term care and cost sharing for acute care for Medicare beneficiaries with low incomes (13%)
· Voluntary employer based private insurance—covering many working families (54%), and
· Individual insurance (5%)
The remaining 16% of the population is uninsured. The number of uninsured people has increased from 40 million in 2000 to nearly 47 million in 2005. Coverage varies widely between states and has deteriorated in recent years
early all of the growth in the uninsured is among people aged 18 to 64, most of whom are working. The average family premium for employer based cover is $11 480 (£5900; 8800) a year. Employers have cut back on coverage and benefits in response to rising healthcare costs and adverse economic circumstances. Enactment of a state children's health insurance programme in 1997 has provided insurance for five million children from low income families, offsetting the fall in cover of dependents through voluntary employment based insurance.

Did someone slip some toadstools into your stash. Not a single one of the comments you have sent my way today have any connection with the topic under discussion. In case you can't distinguish between the Scotsman and your comic books, the topic is prostate cancer and mortality rates in different countries. It's not a particularly entertaining subject. Nonetheless my comments were apropos and yours are not. Have you been hanging around with Wally?

Hey Dude,
Alcohol and Nicotine are legal drugs. Heroin , Cannabis , Cocaine are Illegal drugs.

All five KILL people . But the legal drugs kill 100 times more people world wide than do the illegal drugs.

SO what's Ur point dude.

I use wild natural shrooms in cooking .
They too are illegal

Great logic here dude.

Hey All You Scots!!!

I'm offering up for auction, one drug embalmed, mushroom addled, enormously vacuous, utterly clueless, and totally incoherent in scope Lemming, currently residing in "Arnie-Land" aka, Murrieta, CA.

He's got low, low, low, Chronological Miles on him, and was only driven around after ditching school by a totally unsuspecting mom (her mom is the renowned "Little Old Lady from Pasedena"), known to praise him for his wonderful insights into daily life, politics, social concerns, and key geo-global issues of the day.

Her name is 'Bambi'.

Now what will you lively Scots offer for this teenage model, slightly used but chemically abused, and ready to believe ANYTHING while Under the Influence!!!

Bidding will start at 3 Cockroaches, 8 Silverfish, 4 Earwigs, 1 dozen Dust Mites, and a well used but slightly gnawed upon Partridge in a Pear Tree and the Scraggly Cat with a bitten off tail that gnawed on the Partridge.

Please make sure that all you insects are alive and moving, the Partridge still has some feathers intact, and that the cat with the bitten off tail has not yet discovered he is up for auction.

The winning bidder will be required to pay for shipping from CA to Scotland, but the good news about shipping is that the Slow Boat from China is now available and at a hugely discounted rental rate (hint, if you've any roadkill still lying around the garage, you're definitely in the running).

Remember people: bid soon, bid often, and keep those critters moving and shiny!!!!

Let 'er rip!!

Cheers from the Rockies
