Prince Charles to open stately home
THE Prince of Wales will today officially open the Scottish stately home that he saved for the nation.
He will be joined by First Minister Alex Salmond for the ceremony at Dumfries House in East Ayrshire, which is being opened to the public for the first time in its 250-year history.
The mansion was put on the market for around £25 million but was saved at the 11th hour by Charles, who led a consortium of charities and the Scottish Government to make the purchase last summer.
The Prince, who is known as the Duke of Rothesay in Scotland, helped arrange a £45 million deal to buy the 18th century house and its collection of Chippendale furniture, securing its future. Charles's own charity, the Prince's Charities Foundation, contributed £20 million.
